The 9th-Gen iPad Hit $199 at Amazon for Labor Day—What to Check Before Buying

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Verdict: The $199 Amazon price was a real Labor Day 2024 deal for the 10.2-inch, Wi‑Fi, 64GB iPad (9th generation). It is not a verified live offer today. The deal ended September 2, 2024, and no current Amazon listing at $199 was confirmed as of August 18, 2026. Treat any new $199 headline as a deal to verify, not as an active promotion.

What the $199 deal actually was

Detail Verified information
Retailer Amazon U.S. (with Best Buy also reported at $199)
Configuration 10.2-inch iPad, Wi‑Fi, 64GB
Reported price $199, compared with a stated $329 reference price
Date Labor Day sale coverage published/updated September 2–3, 2024
Current status Historical; a live 2026 offer was not verified

Tom’s Guide described the $199 price as the lowest it had seen at the time: its Labor Day 2024 coverage. That report does not establish that the price is still available, that every listing was new, or that the same seller, stock, shipping terms, coupon requirements, taxes, and return policy apply now.

Labor Day 2026 was September 7. Unless an Amazon product page currently shows the exact configuration and price, “get it for $199 this Labor Day” is not an accurate current claim.

Identify the exact iPad

This is the iPad (9th generation), introduced in 2021. Apple’s specifications list a 10.2-inch Retina display (2160×1620, 264 ppi), an A13 Bionic chip, 64GB or 256GB storage, an 8MP rear camera and 12MP Ultra Wide front camera with Center Stage, Touch ID in the Home button, a Lightning port, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and support for the first-generation Apple Pencil. The Wi‑Fi model weighs 1.07 pounds and measures 9.8 by 6.8 by 0.29 inches. See Apple’s technical specifications.

#1 Best Overall

Apple rates battery life at up to 10 hours of web browsing on Wi‑Fi or video playback under its test conditions. Actual runtime varies with settings, network activity, apps, and battery condition.

Why $199 was attractive

  • Low-cost iPadOS access: You get Apple’s App Store, iCloud, FaceTime, AirDrop, and broad tablet-app support at a far lower entry price than newer iPads.
  • Capable everyday performance: The A13 Bionic is well suited to browsing, school apps, streaming, video calls, note-taking, casual games, and light multitasking.
  • Useful front camera: Center Stage can keep a person framed during compatible video calls.
  • Accessory flexibility: The Smart Connector supports Apple’s Smart Keyboard ecosystem, and the tablet works with the first-generation Apple Pencil.
  • Convenient wired audio: The headphone jack is useful for children, classrooms, travel, and older wired headphones.
  • Standard new-unit contents: A new retail package includes the iPad, a Lightning-to-USB-C cable, and a 20W USB-C power adapter.

What you give up

64GB can become restrictive

Sixty-four gigabytes is workable for online streaming, web browsing, email, school documents, light gaming, and occasional downloads. It is a poor fit for large game libraries, offline Netflix or Disney+ videos, extensive photo and video storage, creative projects, or several people sharing one tablet. iCloud storage can help with files, but it does not add local space for apps and downloaded media.

Older ports, camera and design

The 9th generation uses Lightning rather than USB‑C, has larger bezels and a physical Home button, and supports only the first-generation Pencil. Its display is not laminated. It also uses Wi‑Fi 5 and lacks the newer landscape-oriented front-camera arrangement.

Longevity is less certain

This is discontinued-generation hardware. Apple does not promise a fixed number of future software updates, so its remaining support horizon is less certain than that of a newer iPad. Do not buy it on the assumption that it will receive every current or future feature. Apple’s iPadOS 26 feature document lists Apple Intelligence support for selected newer iPad Pro and iPad Air models, not this A13-based iPad: iPadOS 26 feature details.

Use Apple’s comparison pages to check the differences: 10th generation versus 9th generation and multi-model comparison. A listing showing USB‑C, a top-button fingerprint sensor, or the redesigned body is not the 9th-generation model.

Who should buy it

  • Families wanting an inexpensive first tablet for a child.
  • Students using Safari, email, school apps, documents, and video calls.
  • People focused on streaming, reading, browsing, and casual games.
  • Apple households that value iCloud, FaceTime, AirDrop, and existing App Store purchases.
  • Buyers who specifically need the lowest-cost iPad and accept its older design.

Who should wait or pay more

  • Anyone who needs substantial local storage or several years of demanding use.
  • Digital artists who want a newer Pencil experience or USB‑C accessories.
  • Heavy multitaskers, video editors, and demanding gamers.
  • Frequent landscape video-call users who prefer the newer camera placement.
  • Anyone considering a used unit with unknown battery health or weak return rights.
  • Buyers who can get a newer iPad for roughly $50–$100 more; the newer port, camera layout, wireless standard, and support outlook may justify that premium.

Verify the listing before paying

  1. Confirm generation: The title should explicitly say “iPad (9th Generation)” or show a matching model identifier.
  2. Confirm configuration: Select Wi‑Fi and 64GB. Cellular and 256GB versions are different products.
  3. Check condition: Distinguish new, used, renewed, and refurbished.
  4. Check seller and fulfillment: Note whether it is sold or shipped by Amazon, Apple, an authorized retailer, or an unrelated marketplace seller.
  5. Review checkout: Confirm any coupon, tax, shipping charge, membership requirement, and final total.
  6. Read returns: Check the deadline and whether the exact listing is returnable.
  7. Check delivery: An attractive price is less useful if the item is back-ordered or unavailable in your ZIP code.
  8. For used or refurbished units, ask about battery testing: Reduced capacity can erase the savings.
  9. Compare newer models: Recheck the price gap before committing to older hardware.

Refurbished and used alternatives

Apple’s certified refurbished listings can be safer than an unknown marketplace offer because Apple states that refurbished products receive its refurbishment process, a one-year limited warranty, and 14-day returns, subject to availability. See the official refurbished 9th-generation iPad listing. Its current price and stock must be checked directly; the available information does not establish a $199 price.

For any used iPad, verify that Activation Lock is removed, battery condition is disclosed or tested, the serial number matches the listing, and you have meaningful return protection.

Account for the complete cost

The tablet may not be the whole purchase. A case and screen protector are sensible for children, school, and travel. Pencil, keyboard, replacement cable, and extra iCloud storage can materially increase the total. The 9th-generation chassis is compatible with cases made for the 10.2-inch 7th-, 8th-, and 9th-generation iPads, not cases for the 10th-generation model. Apple lists compatible accessories at its Apple Pencil page, iPad keyboard page, and cases and protection page.

Bottom line on the $199 iPad

Buy at $199 only when the live listing confirms a new or clearly certified-refurbished Wi‑Fi, 64GB iPad 9th generation, a reputable seller, acceptable returns, and a final checkout total that still works for you. It remains a strong bargain for basic iPad use, but it is not automatically the best long-term purchase. Wait or step up to a newer model when storage, USB‑C, Pencil workflow, camera placement, battery condition, or years of expected use matter more than the lowest upfront price.
