Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →A headline of 3 million HTTP requests per second does not, on its own, establish production capacity. The figure is meaningful only alongside a precise description of each request, proof that the generator actually offered and achieved the load, latency and correctness results, the network and backend path, and evidence that the service holds up over time and during operational changes. The 3M req/s figure in this title is not independently validated by the cited materials; treat it as a claim to evaluate, not a verified benchmark result.
Wall 1: What counts as a request?
“Requests per second” is a count, not a workload description. Two tests can report the same RPS while asking the server to do very different amounts of work. A request might be a tiny health check served from memory, or a large authenticated API operation that reads data, calls another service, and returns a substantial response.

To interpret a rate, establish the request semantics: method, endpoint, request and response sizes, handler behavior, cache-hit rate, authentication, and response validation. Also record the HTTP version and connection policy. Reusing a persistent connection avoids much of the cost of establishing connections; a test that opens or closes connections frequently exercises a different path.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Cilium’s network-focused benchmark documentation illustrates the distinction: it describes a TCP request/response test using persistent connections and a single-byte exchange. That can be useful for measuring a narrow network path, but it is not evidence that an application can process the same number of complete HTTP transactions. A request/response microbenchmark and a production application workload answer different questions.

When someone reports a rate, ask what one successful request actually did and what response counted as correct. Without those details, the numerator is ambiguous.
Wall 2: Did the generator really offer the claimed load?
A configured rate is not necessarily the rate the service received. Load-generation strategy matters. In a closed-loop test, a client waits for a response before sending more work. As response times rise, that waiting can lower the arrival rate, hiding overload. An open-loop test schedules arrivals independently of response completion, making it possible to maintain an intended arrival rate while latency changes.
Google Cloud’s load-testing guidance recommends open-loop generation when the goal is a steady request rate independent of response time. That does not make open-loop testing automatically trustworthy: the generator hosts, their network, and the path between them and the service can become the bottleneck. A test must measure the achieved rate, not merely display the target configured in a tool.

Ask for the generator tool and configuration, number and location of generator hosts, and time series showing both offered and achieved throughput. The report should explain whether the generator itself stayed healthy and whether any dropped or delayed work was counted. If the generator cannot sustain the intended arrival pattern, the result describes the test setup’s limit rather than the server’s capacity.
Wall 3: What latency, failures, and correctness came with the rate?
Peak throughput alone is not a useful capacity boundary. A service that handles a very high rate while responses become unacceptably slow, errors rise, or returned data is wrong has not demonstrated usable capacity for that workload. Define the service-level objective (SLO) or explicit acceptance thresholds before testing, then measure the rate at which the service still meets them.
Record latency distributions, not just an average. A mean can conceal a slow tail; p95, p99, and, where the workload calls for it, p99.9 show how long the slower requests take. Grafana’s k6 documentation treats request rate, response duration, failed requests, and checks as separate metrics, and explains why percentile latency can expose slow requests that averages obscure.

Correctness checks matter alongside transport-level success. A response can arrive with a successful status while containing an invalid or incomplete result. Report what the test verified, how many requests failed, and whether failure rates or latency changed as load increased. Include CPU, memory, and other relevant resource utilization so readers can see whether the service had headroom or was at a saturation boundary. Google Cloud’s guidance also notes that the best operating point can be below 100% utilization; a maximum rate at total saturation may leave no room for bursts or normal variation.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCapacity is therefore a rate bound to conditions: a specified request mix, latency objective, error and correctness limits, and resource constraints. It is not simply the highest number shown on a dashboard.
Wall 4: Did the benchmark use the production network and backend path?
A direct test against one backend may skip work performed by the production route, such as load balancing, network distance, TLS termination, or the normal distribution across backend instances. If clients and test servers are unusually close, the test may also avoid the latency and connection behavior seen by real users. The closer the benchmark path is to the path users actually take, the more relevant its result is.

Google Cloud’s load-balancer documentation describes how balancing modes and proactive backend capacity estimates affect traffic distribution. A configured target is not necessarily a hard cap: a backend may receive more than its estimated capacity when it is already at or above that level. A benchmark that records only aggregate service throughput can miss uneven distribution or an overloaded individual backend.
Document the backend count and configuration, load-balancer mode and settings, client geography, and connection behavior. Long-lived connections can affect how traffic is distributed; Google Cloud’s best-practices guidance discusses client-to-backend proximity and limiting very long-lived connections by lifetime or request count. Test with connection patterns that match the production use case, or explain clearly why they differ.
A benchmark that bypasses a production component can still be valuable for isolating a layer. It should be described as a test of that layer, rather than presented as end-to-end production capacity.

Wall 5: Does the result survive time, scaling, and operational load?
A short peak says little about sustained behavior. It may not reveal memory growth, resource contention, changing cache effectiveness, or degradation that appears only after the service has been under load for a while. The report should give warm-up and measurement periods, total duration, and the traffic pattern, including whether load was steady, ramped, or bursty.
Production capacity also changes when the number of instances changes. A service may autoscale in response to load, but the transition takes time and can affect latency; a single-instance result does not establish how the fleet behaves during scale-out or scale-in. Google Kubernetes Engine’s gateway traffic-management guidance connects service capacity with autoscaling and load balancing and recommends observing workloads under load in both test and production against SLOs.
Overload behavior is part of the evidence, too. Find the point where the service stops meeting its acceptance thresholds and record what happens beyond it: whether latency climbs gradually, errors spike, or the system recovers after load falls. That boundary is more useful for planning than a peak figure with no stated operating limit.
Zalando’s Skipper operations documentation offers a project-reported example of operational context: it reports 65,000 HTTP requests per second per instance at p99.9 latency no greater than 25 ms in a continuous production-like load test with logs, metrics, and tracing enabled. The same documentation reports two million requests per second across multiple instances in production. These are statements about Skipper’s own setup, not independent evaluations or guarantees transferable to another service. Meta’s 2020 engineering account provides another example of capacity planning: moving production traffic to a small number of hosts to estimate per-host throughput near performance degradation, then using that data for sizing. These examples illustrate why workload, instrumentation, and operating conditions belong beside any rate.
What should a credible 3M req/s report include?
Use this checklist to decide whether a headline rate supports a production-capacity conclusion. If a report omits an item, treat the corresponding conclusion as unestablished rather than filling in the gap with assumptions.

- Load generation: tool and configuration; open-loop or closed-loop model; generator host count and location; configured arrival rate; achieved rate; and evidence that the generators and their network were not limiting the test.
- Test conditions: warm-up, measurement duration, traffic pattern, geography, software versions, and whether the workload represents expected production traffic.
- Outcomes: throughput over time; p50, p95, p99, and relevant higher-percentile latency; failures; response checks; and CPU, memory, and other important resource utilization.
- Production path: backend count and configuration, load-balancer mode and settings, client-to-service path, and any differences from the live route.
