There is no single robot vacuum that suits every Australian home. TechRadar’s Australia guide, last updated 23 September 2026, names the Ecovacs Deebot X8 Pro Omni its best overall, with separate picks for a runner-up, budget shoppers, carpet and pet households. Those are TechRadar’s recommendations and test judgments—not a guarantee that each model is the right fit for your floors, layout or budget.
The guide’s author, Sharmishta Sarkar, says she has tested robot vacuums for a decade. TechRadar describes testing each model for at least two weeks, covering debris pickup, mopping, mapping, navigation and everyday use. Which robot vacuum should you choose?
Start with the floor and cleaning job that matter most. A model tuned for carpet or pet hair may not be the best value for a small hard-floor home, while an automated mop dock can save routine work but adds tanks, cleaning and space requirements.
| Model | TechRadar’s category | What the guide highlights | Trade-off to weigh |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ecovacs Deebot X8 Pro Omni | Best overall | Strong tested pickup across several debris types, good edge cleaning and an extendable roller mop. | Discontinued, though retailer stock remained when the guide was updated; the guide says not to pay full price. |
| Dreame Aqua10 Ultra Roller | Runner-up | Carpet-hair pickup, roller mopping and a mop cover intended to protect carpet. | Requires clean-water refills and dirty-water emptying; its roller may remain slightly damp after drying. |
| Xiaomi X20+ | Budget | A lower-cost recommendation with a dock that has 4 L clean- and dirty-water tanks. | The mop-pad cleaning cycle still needs manual scrubbing to remove residue. |
| Roborock Saros 20 | Best for carpets | Slim, turret-free design, carpet recognition and a chassis that raises to cross thresholds and thick carpets. | Described as very premium priced; the reviewer did not independently record battery runtime. |
| Dreame X50 Ultra | Best for pets | Dual spinning mop pads, self-emptying and a low 8.9 cm robot profile. | TechRadar flags patchy object avoidance and faster battery drain; a successor had arrived by the guide’s update. |
The table summarizes the guide’s editorial judgments, not a head-to-head test conducted for this article. Model availability, Australian pricing and stock can change; check the exact local model listing before buying.

What matters more than the suction number?
Pickup on your floors
Consider whether your home has hard floors, low-pile rugs or thick carpet, and the debris you most need removed. TechRadar says its tests use flour and cookie crumbs for fine dirt and oats for larger debris, repeated on hard flooring and carpet, with remnants checked after one and two passes. Its guide warns that a high advertised Pa rating does not automatically mean stronger real-world cleaning.
Hair, edges and obstacles
Pet hair and long hair can place different demands on a vacuum than crumbs or dust. Also consider whether it cleans close to edges and how it navigates cables, socks and objects on the floor. TechRadar’s obstacle checks include a charging cable, a floor-colored sock and fake pet waste; the guide cautions pet owners not to trust any robot to avoid real feces, even when pet-mess recognition is advertised.
Mop design and carpet handling
Roller mops and spinning-pad systems are different approaches, and neither makes every robot a substitute for manual stain removal. If you have rugs, check how the robot handles carpet while mopping: whether it lifts the mop, recognizes carpet or can leave mop components at the dock for vacuum-only runs. TechRadar describes these features on some of its picks, but exact behavior varies by model.

A dock may empty dust, wash or dry mops, hold clean and dirty water, or dispense detergent. More automation can reduce routine chores, but it also means more parts to refill, empty and clean, plus a larger dock footprint. Measure clearance under furniture and the height of thresholds; a low-profile robot or a lifting chassis may matter more than a headline suction figure.
What each of the five picks offers
Ecovacs Deebot X8 Pro Omni: overall pick
TechRadar reports strong pickup on tea, oats, hair and fine dust, reliable navigation and good edge cleaning in its tests. Its extendable roller mop handled many dried stains, though the guide says exceptionally dirty carpets and heavy dried spills can still challenge it.
Rank #2

The guide lists 18,000 Pa maximum suction, a 9.8 cm robot height, 2 cm threshold clearance and a self-emptying dock with a 3 L dust bag. It says the model has been discontinued but retailer stock remained, and advises against paying full price. Its suggested value threshold was below AU$1,400 at the time of the article; treat that as a dated guide-era judgment, not a current Australian price.
Dreame Aqua10 Ultra Roller: runner-up
The guide highlights carpet-hair pickup and roller mopping, plus a cover designed to protect carpet. Its dock dries the dust bag; the system also supports optional detergent and pet-odor neutralizer. TechRadar notes that the mop roller may stay slightly damp after drying, and that owners still need to refill clean water and empty dirty water.
Xiaomi X20+: budget pick
TechRadar names this its lower-cost choice and describes a dock with 4 L clean- and dirty-water tanks. The mop-pad self-cleaning cycle does not eliminate hands-on care: the guide says a brush is still needed to scrub residue from the pads. Check the current Australian listing and its included features rather than assuming every market variant is identical.
Roborock Saros 20: carpet pick
The guide describes a slim, turret-free robot with a chassis that raises to traverse thresholds and thick carpets, alongside carpet and obstacle recognition. It can leave its mop pads at the dock for vacuum-only cleaning. TechRadar calls it very premium priced and does not report an independently recorded battery runtime, so do not treat an assumed runtime as a tested figure.
Dreame X50 Ultra: pet pick
TechRadar lists 20,000 Pa maximum suction, an 8.9 cm robot height, dual spinning mop pads, a 3.2 L dock dust bag and claimed threshold clearance of up to 6 cm. The guide also flags patchy object avoidance and quicker battery drain. Its author reports about 90 minutes of vacuum-only use in real use, compared with the manufacturer’s claimed maximum of up to 200 minutes under the lowest settings; those figures describe different conditions, not a like-for-like test.
Rank #3

- Schedule Cleaning & Automatic Charging: V2 vacuum robot can run routine cleaning automatically based on preset schedule, it cleans up to 120 minutes on a single charge and automatically returns to the charging dock when the battery is low
The guide says this model had been replaced by a successor and that retailers were clearing stock for AU$1,795–AU$1,999 when the article was written. That is a dated report, not a current price or confirmation of present availability.

Can a robot vacuum replace a normal vacuum?
No. TechRadar characterizes robot vacuums as tools for regular, light floor cleaning rather than deep cleaning. They cannot clean stairs, furniture or other non-floor surfaces, so a manual vacuum remains useful for those jobs. A robot is best understood as a way to reduce routine floor upkeep, not to eliminate every other cleaning task.
Are robot vacuums worth it?
They are most useful when frequent, unattended floor cleaning is valuable enough to justify the purchase and the dock’s upkeep. Before choosing one, account for the dock’s space, the work of maintaining water tanks and mop parts, and the need to pick up obstacles. TechRadar’s guide also warns that dust bags can develop odors if moisture gets into them.
TechRadar reports that a 2024 Roskilde University study compared householders’ experiences with robot and manual vacuuming and found that robotic vacuums were inferior in use yet transformed vacuuming. The guide provides no numerical result or further study details in that account, so it supports that limited description—not a broader claim about how much time every household saves.
Quick Recap
How to use TechRadar’s recommendations
- Choose the main job. Decide whether you prioritize carpet, pet hair, mopping, a lower upfront cost or a broad all-rounder.
- Check the home fit. Measure low furniture, thresholds and the area available for a dock; note rugs and likely floor obstacles.
- Inspect the exact Australian model. Verify current stock, price, variant, dock features and compatible maintenance supplies with the local retailer or manufacturer.
- Plan the upkeep. Consider how often you will refill or empty tanks, clean mop parts and replace dust bags, and whether that routine suits you.
