There is no single best social networking app for everyone. The right choice depends on whether you want to share photos, discover short videos, meet people around a shared interest, keep up with professional contacts, join public conversations, or message people privately—and whether the people you want to reach are already there.
This guide compares 12 apps by their main use case, rather than presenting an unsupported universal ranking. The selection draws on Apple’s UK App Store social-app curation, audience context from a 2025 U.S. survey by Pew Research Center, and limited third-party editorial assessments. Features and availability can change, so check each app’s current listing and help pages before relying on a particular capability.

How to choose a social networking app
Start with the kind of interaction you want, then check whether your friends, colleagues, or interest groups use the service. An app with a large audience may still be a poor fit if the people you want to connect with are elsewhere. The 12 options below cover different activities; their order is an editorial shortlist, not a measured quality ranking.

The 12 best social networking apps by use case
1. Instagram: visual sharing and creator content
Instagram is a fit for people who want a visually oriented social presence and creator-facing content. A third-party 2026 roundup distinguishes its feed posts, Stories, and Reels as different ways to publish and view content; that is an editorial description, not a comparative test. Check Instagram’s current app listing for available features in your region.

2. TikTok: discovering short-form video

3. Facebook: broad social connections
Facebook is worth considering if your existing network is there or you want a broad social service. Its inclusion in Apple’s UK social-app curation confirms that it is part of that editorial shortlist; it does not establish a comparative advantage or a particular feature set. Confirm current tools and settings in Facebook’s official app information.
4. LinkedIn: professional networking
LinkedIn is aimed at professional connections and career-related networking, as reflected in the App Store’s promotional descriptor. It is a better fit for work-oriented contacts than for a feed focused mainly on personal updates or entertainment.

6. Discord: group conversation and communities
Discord is a candidate for ongoing group conversation, gaming, and community spaces. Those categories reflect Apple’s App Store descriptor, rather than an independent assessment of every server or feature. The value of Discord depends heavily on whether the groups you want to join use it.
7. Pinterest: visual discovery and saved ideas
Pinterest is oriented toward visual discovery and saving lifestyle ideas, according to its App Store descriptor. It may fit better when you want to collect and revisit inspiration than when your main goal is real-time conversation with friends.

Threads is a public-conversation option. Meta announced on June 16, 2026 that the service had reached 500 million monthly active users; this is a company-reported milestone, not an independently audited measurement in the sources cited here. Meta also described community features moving out of beta and a “Your Algo” feed-control feature. At the time of that announcement, Meta said “Your Algo” was rolling out in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand. Rollouts can change, so check the current app and Meta updates for availability.
10. X: text-first public conversation
X is a text-first option for public conversation. AppsTested’s March 2026 roundup characterizes it as useful for real-time news while also noting concerns; that is the roundup’s judgment, not an independently established result. Weigh the public-discussion format against your preferences and review current account and safety settings before joining.

Bluesky is another option for text-based social networking and may appeal to readers who want different choices for their feeds. Apple includes it in its social-app curation, and AppsTested describes it as decentralized; that description is attributed to the third-party roundup, not presented here as a verified technical assessment. Check the current official product information for details that matter to you.
12. WhatsApp: private messaging and group communication
WhatsApp is the list’s category-adjacent choice: it is useful for social connection through private messaging and group communication rather than a public feed. Apple includes it in its UK social-app curation. It is a practical fit when the people you want to reach already use it.

Privacy and account security are part of the choice
Popularity does not establish that an app is private or safer than its alternatives. The sources here do not provide comparative privacy audits or a common security test across all 12 services. Tom’s Guide’s 2025 safety guidance recommends enabling two-factor or multifactor authentication where available. Before relying on a specific security control, check the platform’s current official help center for its account-protection options and setup steps.
