In React, use defaultValue for an initial uncontrolled value, or pair value with an onChange handler that updates state. A form builder may have its own default-text setting or rendering issue. The exact cause depends on how the field is built.
Check the rendered textarea first

Open the page in your browser and inspect the field. Confirm it is a

For plain HTML, initial text belongs between the opening and closing tags. A

<textarea>Starting text</textarea>
<textarea placeholder="Enter a message"></textarea>The first example starts with editable text. The second displays a hint that disappears when the user enters text.

If the textarea is in a React app
React offers two patterns. Choose based on whether the current text is owned by the component’s state or simply needs an initial value. React documents both patterns in its textarea reference.

For an uncontrolled textarea
Use defaultValue when you need to supply starting text but do not need application state to track every edit. Check that the prop is set on the textarea actually being rendered.

For a controlled textarea
A controlled field needs an onChange handler that updates the state used by value. If state remains empty, the field can look blank; if it is not updated on edits, the displayed value will not behave as expected. Check whether state starts empty or is overwritten during data loading or a rerender.
If a form builder creates the field

Verify that you saved default text on the correct field. A placeholder and a default value serve different purposes.

Compare the editor with the published page. This helps establish whether the text is missing only in the editor or in the rendered form too.

Check the form builder’s version history and documented fixes. For example, WPForms has a changelog that records a historical default-text display fix for Paragraph Text fields; that example does not establish that WPForms is in use or that the issue applies to a current installation. What to share if it is still missing
If these checks do not identify the cause, provide the platform or framework, a minimal textarea snippet or form-field configuration, and whether the missing text is meant to be a default value or a placeholder. Without those details, the cause cannot be diagnosed reliably.
