Generated images are useful for concepts and illustrative campaign art; they are not evidence of a property’s real appearance. For edits to listing photos, test whether important features remain faithful and check applicable disclosure rules before publication.
What a text-to-image API does—and what it does not promise
A text-to-image API accepts a prompt and returns generated image data. Some image workflows also accept an existing image along with instructions, enabling image-to-image editing. These capabilities can support promotional concepts, generic neighborhood illustrations, mockups, or virtual staging. They do not establish that a generated scene accurately depicts a particular home.

That distinction matters most when the input is a real listing photograph. A generated edit could alter a room, view, fixture, surface, or structural feature. An API’s ability to accept an image and produce an edit is not a guarantee that it preserves those details. Treat illustrative marketing art and documentary listing photography as different asset types, with different review expectations.
What the documented API options offer
Official documentation helps establish integration paths, available controls, and some provider terms. It does not settle which system will make the most faithful edits, respond fastest, or produce the lowest cost per approved asset for your workflow.

| OpenAI Images API | The API reference documents POST /images/generations, prompt-based generation, and controls for model, size, quality, output format, moderation, image count, and streaming. GPT Image output is base64 image data by default. |
The reference lists GPT Image models including gpt-image-1, gpt-image-1-mini, gpt-image-1.5, gpt-image-2, dated snapshots, and named 2.5 variants. The same reference marks DALL·E 2 and DALL·E 3 retired on May 12, 2026. Check the live reference for availability before deployment. Source: OpenAI, Create image | OpenAI API Reference. |
| Google Gemini image generation | Google documents JavaScript use of @google/genai. Its response can include an output_image block with base64 data that can be decoded and saved. The guide also documents image editing with text and image inputs. |

Image output affects your backend design
With GPT Image, the documented default is base64 image data rather than a durable hosted image URL. In a Node.js service, that means planning for binary payload handling, controlled storage, and safe delivery through your application. Keep API credentials on the server; authorize requests; set limits on prompt, size, and image count; avoid logging sensitive image payloads; and move approved output bytes into storage your application controls. These are engineering recommendations based on the response shape, not a claim that a provider supplies a particular storage architecture.
Lifecycle status is part of the choice
Model names and endpoints can change during an application’s lifetime. The OpenAI API reference marks DALL·E 2 and DALL·E 3 retired on May 12, 2026. Google’s Imagen 4 documentation announced that its standard, ultra, and fast endpoints were to shut down on August 17, 2026, and advised migration to Gemini 3.1 Flash Image. That announced date has passed; the notice establishes the scheduled shutdown, not an independent confirmation of actual endpoint status. Verify availability and migration guidance directly with the provider before building against a model.

How to structure the Node.js workflow
A reliable integration separates the user-facing request from the long-running generation call and from the final asset. That makes it easier to enforce access, handle failures, and keep unreviewed output out of listing pages.
- Accept and validate a job. Check the caller’s authorization, prompt length, requested aspect ratio or dimensions, image count, and intended use. Reject requests outside defined limits before they consume provider capacity.
- Record a job, not an assumed instant result. Save a job identifier and relevant non-sensitive metadata. Use a queue when generation can outlast a normal request-response window; define retry rules and avoid duplicate jobs when a client resubmits after a timeout.
- Call the provider from the backend. Keep credentials out of browser code. Handle timeouts, rate limits, provider errors, and partial or missing outputs explicitly rather than treating every response as a finished image.
- Decode and store returned bytes. For base64 output, validate and decode the data, then store it in controlled object storage with an application-level asset identifier. Do not treat an API response payload as permanent storage.
- Review before publication. Route edits of property-specific photography to a human reviewer. Keep generated concepts and illustrative assets distinguishable from documentary listing images in the workflow.
- Track operational outcomes. Record model and settings, completion or failure, elapsed time, review decision, and cost where available. Avoid retaining prompts or image data longer than your privacy and operational requirements justify.
For repeatability, make the model, input asset identifier, prompt, dimensions, quality, output format, and review result visible in the job record. Keep secrets and raw image data out of ordinary application logs. A successful API response only means the provider returned output; it does not mean the image is suitable for a listing.

What to compare before selecting an API
Use documentation to shortlist candidates, then evaluate them on the same representative work. The following axes separate facts available in provider documentation from outcomes your team must measure.
- Integration: Confirm Node.js support or the feasibility of direct HTTP, authentication requirements, response shape, asynchronous behavior, error handling, and rate-limit guidance.
- Image workflow: Determine whether you need prompt-only generation, image-to-image editing, reference-image handling, conceptual art, or a controlled virtual staging workflow. Do not infer fidelity from the presence of an image-editing feature.
- Output controls: Compare documented dimensions and aspect ratios, formats, quality options, transparency or background controls, batch size, and streaming. Check limits against the formats your publishing pipeline needs.
- Backend operations: Plan for binary or base64 handling, object storage, queues, retries, idempotency, rate limits, and observability. These requirements belong to your application even where provider SDKs simplify the API call.
- Privacy and terms: Read current data-use, retention, geography, service eligibility, image-rights, and acceptable-use terms for the exact service and account type you plan to use. Provider statements are not a complete privacy comparison or legal analysis.
- Measured economics and performance: Measure elapsed time, failure rate, edit fidelity, review effort, and cost per approved usable image using your own representative prompts and source images.
How to evaluate property-image fidelity
No controlled provider comparison is established here for listing-photo fidelity, latency, cost, or property-marketing usefulness. A useful internal evaluation therefore needs a shared test set and a pass/fail rubric rather than a ranking based on API feature lists.

- Choose representative, rights-cleared inputs. Include the room types, image quality, lighting, and editing requests your team encounters. Confirm that you have the rights and permissions needed to use each source image with the selected service.
- Use the same task specification. Give each candidate the same prompt, source image, requested output shape, and comparable settings where the APIs permit. Record differences in settings rather than assuming superficially similar controls are equivalent.
- Define unacceptable changes in advance. For property-photo edits, identify protected details such as room dimensions, windows and views, fixtures, structural elements, and existing conditions. Decide which alterations make an image unusable or require escalation.
- Have reviewers score outputs consistently. Track whether each image meets the request, preserves material property features, introduces misleading details, and can be approved under your editorial policy. Record review time as well as approval.
- Calculate cost per approved asset. Include failed calls, unusable generations, retries, and human review—not just the nominal cost of one successful API call. Repeat tests when prompts, models, or provider terms change.
This process measures suitability for your workflow; it does not establish that generated imagery is a factual representation of a property or that an approved image satisfies every local rule.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCost figures: historical examples, not a current cross-provider quote
OpenAI’s 2025 announcement for gpt-image-1 quoted rates of $5 per million text-input tokens, $10 per million image-input tokens, and $40 per million image-output tokens. The same announcement gave illustrative estimates of about $0.02, $0.07, and $0.19 for low-, medium-, and high-quality square images, respectively. These are historical figures for that model and announcement, not current pricing for every OpenAI model, image shape, or provider.
Best Value
For a current budget, check the provider’s applicable pricing and calculate against your actual prompt and image mix. Use cost per approved usable image as the operational metric: a low call price can be outweighed by retries, rejected outputs, or review time. No cross-provider benchmark or comparative cost figure is established here.
Privacy terms and property-marketing review
Provider statements need to be read narrowly and in context. OpenAI’s 2025 launch announcement said, “By default, we never train on customer API data, and all image inputs and outputs remain subject to our API usage policies.” That is OpenAI’s statement about its API service, not a complete account of retention, every contractual term, or another provider’s practices.
Google’s Gemini API Additional Terms, effective March 23, 2026, state: “Use of Google AI Studio and Gemini API is for developers building with Google AI models for professional or business purposes, not for consumer use.” The terms also distinguish unpaid-service data use and specify region requirements. Review the current terms for the intended service, account, and geography; the quoted sentence alone does not resolve all data-treatment questions.
Recommended Free Tools
Before publication, determine how local real-estate law, listing-platform policies, image rights, and agency disclosure rules apply to the particular asset and use. The provider API documentation does not decide those questions. Keep illustrative staging clearly distinguishable from documentary photography, and establish an internal escalation path when an edit changes a material property feature.
