Text messaging usually means carrier-based SMS or MMS sent to a phone number; instant messaging usually means internet-based chat through an app or service. The terms overlap in everyday conversation, and a single phone’s messaging app can use different types of messaging depending on the recipient, carrier, device, and settings. RCS adds another layer: it is an internet-capable carrier messaging standard, not simply another name for SMS.
What distinguishes text messaging from instant messaging?
The practical distinction is the route a message takes, not whether it appears in an app called Messages. SMS (Short Message Service) and MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service) are carrier messaging services typically addressed to telephone numbers. Instant messaging generally means chat sent over an internet connection through an app or service, often using an account or service identity.

| Question | Text messaging, especially SMS/MMS | Instant messaging |
|---|---|---|
| How is it sent? | Through a mobile carrier’s SMS or MMS service. | Through an internet-based app or service. |
| How is the recipient identified? | Usually by a phone number. | Often by an account or identity within the service; some apps also use phone numbers. |
| What does it depend on? | Carrier service and a device or plan that supports the relevant messaging. | Internet access and compatible service or app support. |
| What features can it offer? | SMS is primarily text; MMS supports media. RCS can add features such as higher-resolution media and read receipts when supported. | Features vary by app and can include media sharing, read receipts, and typing indicators. |
| What about encryption? | SMS/MMS is not end-to-end encrypted. RCS protection depends on support and the conversation. | Encryption varies by service and conversation; an app name alone does not establish that a particular chat is end-to-end encrypted. |
These are useful general categories, not a guarantee about every message. A modern messaging app may send SMS, MMS, RCS, or its own internet-based messages, depending on who you are contacting and what both sides support.
Is texting the same as instant messaging?
In casual speech, people often call any short message on a phone a “text,” including chats sent through internet apps. Technically, texting often refers to carrier-based SMS/MMS, while instant messaging refers to service-based chat over IP. The distinction matters when you need to know how a message is delivered, what features are available, or what privacy protections apply.

In the United States, there is also a specific legal definition. 47 U.S.C. § 227 defines a text message to include text, images, sounds, or other information sent to or from a device identified by a 10-digit telephone number or an N11 service code. The statute includes SMS and MMS and excludes real-time two-way voice or video and certain messages sent through an IP-enabled messaging service to another user of that same service.
In a 2019 Federal Communications Commission rule, the FCC explained that the IP-service exclusion includes non-SMS/MMS messages sent through services such as iMessage, WhatsApp, and Skype to users of the same service. That is a US regulatory interpretation, not a universal definition for every country or every use of the phrase “text message.”

Where do SMS, MMS, RCS, and iMessage fit?
SMS and MMS
SMS is the familiar carrier route for text messages. MMS is the carrier service used for multimedia messages. Both are included in the cited US statutory definition of text message. Their availability and handling can depend on the carrier and device.

RCS stands for Rich Communication Services. Google describes it as an industry-standard protocol for carrier messaging. It can support richer media and features such as read receipts, but those features depend on the device, software, carrier, and whether the other participant’s setup supports RCS. Google Messages says a compose bar labeled “Text message” indicates that the message will be sent by the carrier as SMS/MMS. See Google Messages Help on RCS chats.

iMessage
iMessage is Apple’s internet-based messaging service. Apple says it can use Wi-Fi or mobile data and supports features including read receipts and typing indicators. Apple’s Messages app can also send RCS or SMS/MMS, so the app itself does not identify the message type. Apple’s comparison of iMessage, RCS, and SMS/MMS describes the services and notes that device and carrier requirements apply.
On Apple devices, RCS and SMS/MMS can both appear as green bubbles. Green therefore does not mean “SMS” specifically. The message type depends on the conversation’s settings and support.

Is WhatsApp text messaging?
In ordinary conversation, someone may call a WhatsApp message a text. In the technical sense, WhatsApp messages are internet-based messages sent through WhatsApp, rather than carrier SMS or MMS. In the United States, the FCC’s cited interpretation treats certain IP-service messages, including WhatsApp messages sent to another user of that service, as outside the statutory text-message definition.

How can you tell what kind of message you are sending?
- Check the app’s conversation details or compose area. Labels such as “RCS” or “Text message” can identify the route in services that display them. Google Messages identifies “Text message” as carrier SMS/MMS.
- Check the service and recipient. An internet-chat app generally uses its own service; a phone’s default messaging app may switch between iMessage, RCS, and SMS/MMS based on recipient and compatibility.
- Do not rely on bubble color alone. On Apple devices, both RCS and SMS/MMS can appear green.
- For sensitive conversations, check the explicit encryption status. Do not infer end-to-end encryption from the word “text,” the app name, or the bubble color.
Does text messaging or instant messaging offer better privacy?
Neither label alone is enough to judge privacy. Apple states that SMS/MMS messages are not end-to-end encrypted, while iMessage conversations are end-to-end encrypted. RCS encryption depends on supported software, providers, and the specific conversation. Check the app’s explicit encrypted indicator and applicable service documentation rather than assuming every RCS chat is protected. Apple’s security overview for iMessage, RCS, and SMS/MMS explains these distinctions.
On May 11, 2026, Apple announced that end-to-end encrypted RCS messaging had begun rolling out in beta for supported configurations: iPhone users on iOS 26.5 with supported carriers and Android users on the latest Google Messages. This is a dated, support-dependent beta rollout statement, not evidence that all RCS conversations are encrypted everywhere. See Apple’s announcement.
