Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTo prove that a native HTML <dialog> traps keyboard focus and restores it correctly, open it with showModal(), exercise Tab and Shift+Tab at both ends of its tab sequence, then close it and check the active element. A browser test should verify those behaviors—not just the dialog’s open attribute, ARIA state, or appearance.
Set up a real modal-dialog test
Use an opener button outside the dialog and at least two tabbable controls inside it. Open the dialog by activating the opener with the keyboard, as the W3C test procedure specifies. Open it with showModal(): show() opens a non-modal dialog and does not establish the modal behavior this test is meant to prove.

On opening, focus should move to the dialog or a focusable descendant. Choose the intended initial target based on the content; it is not always the first button. For long or structurally complex content, a static heading or paragraph with tabindex="-1" may be a more useful starting point. For a dialog involving an irreversible action, consider initially focusing the least destructive option. See the W3C H102 technique and the WAI-ARIA Authoring Practices Guide modal dialog pattern.

- Open by keyboard. Tab to the button that opens the dialog and activate it with the keyboard.
- Verify focus entry. Inspect the browser’s active element and confirm it is the intended target inside the dialog.
- Test the forward boundary. Put focus on the last tabbable control in the dialog, press Tab, and confirm focus wraps to the first tabbable control.
- Test the reverse boundary. Put focus on the first tabbable control, press Shift+Tab, and confirm focus wraps to the last.
- Check for outside-page leakage. Continue tabbing through the dialog and verify that focus does not move to controls in the primary document while the modal is open.
- Close and inspect focus. Close with the dialog’s close button or Escape, then confirm that focus returns to the opener when it remains in the page.
These checks reflect the W3C H102 test procedure and the APG keyboard model. They test actual focus movement after keyboard input. Merely asserting that the dialog is open, has aria-modal="true", or looks modal does not show that containment or focus restoration works.

Interpret focus containment and restoration correctly
In modal mode, the browser treats content outside the dialog as inert while the dialog is open. The focus requirement concerns the modal’s tab sequence within the page—not the browser’s tabs, address bar, or other browser chrome.
Normally, closing a modal returns focus to the element that invoked it, provided that element is still present. If the workflow removes the opener or makes another control the meaningful next step, focus may instead go to that logical destination. Test that workflow separately so the expected target is explicit.

Give the dialog clear semantics
- Give the dialog an accessible name, commonly by referencing a visible title with
aria-labelledbyor by usingaria-label. - Include a visible close button in the dialog’s tab sequence.
- Set
aria-modal="true"only when the implementation genuinely prevents interaction with outside content for all users and the styling visually distinguishes the modal from that content.
Native modal behavior and custom ARIA dialogs are not interchangeable declarations. With showModal(), the native element provides modal focus movement, containment, return behavior, inert outside content, and Escape handling as described by W3C H102. A custom dialog pattern must implement the expected behavior itself; adding aria-modal="true" without real modality can mislead users. The WAI-ARIA Authoring Practices Guide describes the expected keyboard, naming, and focus behavior, but does not quantify a maintenance or compatibility advantage for either approach.

Use the right Playwright mechanism
An HTML <dialog> is a page element, not a JavaScript browser dialog. Playwright’s page.on('dialog') event is for JavaScript dialogs such as alert(), confirm(), prompt(), and beforeunload; it is not how to test native HTML dialog focus. If a handler is registered for those JavaScript dialogs, it must accept or dismiss them or the page can remain blocked. For native dialog testing, interact with the page’s controls and inspect focus after each keyboard action, as documented in the Playwright Page API.
