In 2026, test automation is expanding beyond scripted checks: teams are using AI to draft tests and identify coverage gaps, while also investing in integration, failure diagnosis, and human review. Survey results show adoption—not proof that generated tests improve software quality. The practical challenge is to increase useful coverage without losing trustworthy assertions or sight of what users need to do.

What are the latest trends in test automation?

The strongest current signals are broader AI use in test authoring, continued attention to human judgment, and a focus on making automated failures easier to diagnose. These figures come from different vendor surveys and should not be treated as one industry-wide measurement.

  • AI-assisted authoring: Applause’s August 2026 survey says more than 92% of its respondents use AI in testing, compared with 60% in its prior-year survey. On the report’s detailed page, 65.1% of the testing sample (n=186) said they used AI to create test cases, 62.4% to create automation scripts, and 48.4% to identify and address coverage gaps. These are reported uses, not evaluations of test correctness or maintainability. Applause’s 2026 survey announcement
  • Workflow integration: BrowserStack reported that 61% of surveyed organizations use AI across most testing workflows, while 37% of respondents identified integrating AI tools with existing workflows as their top challenge. Its survey covered more than 250 engineering leaders across the US, UK, and Europe. BrowserStack also reported that 88% were increasing spending; that is a survey finding, not a verified measure of overall market spending. BrowserStack’s report
  • Quality pressure alongside speed: Applause reported that 29% of respondents saw functional defects increase in number or severity, including 15% who reported increases in both. SmartBear reported that 73% of its respondents were at least somewhat concerned application quality was suffering, and 55% said their organization had experienced quality issues in the prior 12 months that they attributed to development moving faster than testing. SmartBear surveyed 1,436 technology professionals in Q3 2026 at organizations with more than 500 employees and more than $50 million in annual revenue. These surveys asked different questions of different populations. SmartBear’s 2026 report
  • Human review remains important: In Applause’s survey, 86% considered human involvement extremely important to functional testing. Separately, 57% identified humans as important for qualitative peer review and 57% for test strategy based on real-world user behavior. This supports pairing automation with human judgment, not manually repeating every automated check.
  • Debugging is part of automation quality: Playwright’s Trace Viewer can show action history, DOM snapshots, screenshots, source locations, logs, and network events. Its documentation cautions that recording traces is performance-heavy and advises against capturing them for every CI test. Playwright Trace Viewer documentation

How is AI changing software testing?

Survey respondents report using AI to draft test cases and scripts and look for coverage gaps. That can help teams explore possibilities faster, but a generated test is useful only if it checks the intended behavior. A test that merely repeats implementation details—or passes after its assertion has been weakened—can increase the appearance of coverage without giving a reliable signal.

For each AI-assisted test, have an owner verify the scenario, expected result, and assertion against the user or business risk it is meant to protect. Review failures before accepting suggested repairs, and set rules for what application data may be sent to AI tools. The surveys establish adoption and concern, not independent evidence that any particular AI testing tool improves quality.

Applause CTO Tacita Morway described the distinction this way: “Traditional automated testing answers the question: can this task be completed? A human tester answers a harder one: could a real person work out how to do this, and get it done?” That is a vendor executive’s perspective, but it points to a useful division of labor: let scripts repeat stable checks and reserve human attention for contextual, exploratory, accessibility, and usability judgments that a script may not represent well.

Self-healing automation needs similar restraint. Morway has said it should understand test intent, rather than simply change steps until a check passes. Treat a changed locator or repaired action as a proposed change: preserve the original behavioral assertion, inspect what changed, and require review for high-risk flows.

Is Selenium still relevant in 2026?

Yes, for teams whose existing Selenium suites, language skills, integrations, and operating needs make it a sensible fit. A 2026 practitioner survey published in Information and Software Technology received 88 complete responses and found Selenium remained prominent for regression and functional testing. Respondents also cited challenges including assertability, asynchrony, and brittleness. The sample is modest and self-selected, so it cannot establish global market share or predict which framework is best for a particular team. The 2026 Selenium practitioner survey

The same survey identified Playwright as the most prominent alternative among its respondents and reported common use of ChatGPT and GitHub Copilot for test generation. This is evidence about that survey’s participants, not a universal ranking. Existing investment matters: replacing a working suite can cost more than adopting a newer framework’s conveniences are worth.

Should you use Playwright or Selenium?

Choose by fit, not by a claimed universal winner. Compare the suite you already own, the browsers and devices you must cover, the language and CI environment, and how readily the team can diagnose and maintain failures.

Decision What to evaluate
Existing investment Framework, language skills, test count, CI setup, and migration effort. Continued Selenium use in the 88-response practitioner survey is a signal to assess local economics, not a reason to keep or replace it automatically.
Browser and device coverage List required browsers, operating systems, and real or virtual devices. BrowserStack documents support for Selenium, Playwright, and Cypress on Automate; verify the coverage your own plan and test environment require. BrowserStack Automate framework documentation
Language and CI fit Check whether the team can author, review, and run tests in its existing language and build pipeline. Include parallel execution, setup, and reporting in a migration estimate.
Failure diagnosis Compare the action logs, screenshots, DOM state, source references, and network details available when a test fails. For Playwright, Trace Viewer documents these debugging aids; trace capture has a performance cost.
Maintenance and assertion quality Assess flaky checks, brittle selectors, asynchronous behavior, and whether assertions express user-visible outcomes rather than incidental implementation details. A framework change alone does not resolve weak test design.
AI governance and human coverage Decide how generated tests are reviewed, what data may be sent to tools, who owns test strategy, and which user journeys need exploratory, accessibility, or contextual evaluation.

BrowserStack’s documentation is useful when managed cross-browser execution is part of the comparison; it does not by itself settle the framework decision. The best choice is the one that lets the team maintain meaningful checks across its required environment at an acceptable operational cost.

How can you reduce flaky automated tests?

Flakiness is often a symptom of uncertain test conditions or weak signals. The survey evidence identifies brittleness and asynchrony as practitioner challenges, but does not establish one fix that works for every suite. Use failures as diagnostic evidence before changing the test.

  1. Wait for observable readiness. Prefer a condition tied to the expected page state over an arbitrary pause. If the application is still rendering or processing a request, the test should wait for the relevant outcome.
  2. Make assertions behavioral. Assert what a user or downstream system should observe. Avoid assertions so broad that the test passes without verifying the intended result.
  3. Capture evidence selectively. Retain screenshots, logs, or traces for failures and targeted CI runs. Playwright warns that trace capture is performance-heavy, so avoid recording every test by default.
  4. Separate product failures from test failures. Review the failure state, recent application changes, network activity, and test data before retrying or editing a locator. A passing retry does not prove the first failure was harmless.
  5. Review repairs as code changes. If AI or a self-healing feature proposes a new step or selector, confirm that it still tests the original scenario and preserves its assertion.
  6. Prioritize by risk. Stabilize checks around consequential user journeys and release-blocking behavior first; do not spend equal effort on every low-impact edge case.
