Test automation software performs or supports software testing work: it can help prepare tests, set up conditions, run checks, and compare results with expected outcomes. It does not remove the need for people to decide what to test, review failures, or explore behavior that cannot be expressed as a reliable automated check.
What is test automation software?
The ISTQB Glossary defines test automation as the use of software to perform or support test activities, including test management, test design, test execution, and results checking. That scope is broader than a tool that simply launches a test suite. The work can include preparing test cases and data, configuring an environment, executing checks, and interpreting whether actual results match predicted results.

ISTQB’s Test Automation Engineer syllabus describes the assets involved as testware: software, documentation, test cases, environments, and test data. The automation tool is therefore one component of a larger testing process, not a substitute for that process.
What does test automation software do?
- Supports test planning and design: helps organize test activities and define cases or procedures.
- Sets up preconditions: prepares the system, environment, or data needed for a test.
- Executes checks: interacts with the application or service and carries out repeatable steps.
- Checks results: compares observed outcomes with expected results and reports execution state.
The exact functions depend on the tool and the system being tested. ISTQB describes three broad interaction approaches:
#1 Best Overall
- API testing: testing through public interfaces to classes, modules, or libraries.
- User-interface testing: interacting through a graphical user interface (GUI) or command-line interface (CLI).
- Service or protocol testing: exercising a system through its services or communication protocols.
These approaches are not interchangeable. A team should choose based on the system’s accessible interfaces and the checks it needs to make.
Why teams use automation—and what it costs
ISTQB identifies objectives such as expanding functional coverage, reducing total test cost, shortening execution time, improving efficiency, and increasing how often tests run. In suitable projects, automation can run more checks per build, make remote or parallel execution possible, provide quicker feedback, and improve consistency by repeating the same steps.

Those are potential benefits, not guaranteed outcomes. Automation also requires initial setup and investment, suitable technology and skills, and continued maintenance as software changes. Complex tests can be difficult to automate, and automation itself can introduce errors. Teams can also spend too much effort automating cases and too little time actually executing and evaluating tests.

Automating a test is not automatically cheaper or more effective than another way of testing.

What automation cannot replace
Automated checks depend on outcomes that a machine can interpret and an automated test oracle can assess. A test oracle is the basis for deciding whether an observed result is correct. When a behavior is difficult to specify as a dependable expected result, a person may need to investigate it directly.
ISTQB’s 2016 Advanced Level Syllabus – Test Automation Engineer states: “Not a replacement for exploratory testing.” Exploratory testing relies on human investigation and judgment, and not every manual test can be automated. Automation belongs alongside human-led testing in a broader test strategy.

How to evaluate a test automation approach
Before selecting software or a framework, assess the testing problem and the team that will maintain the tests. Useful evaluation questions include:

- Test and environment needs: Which functional checks must run, how often, and do they need remote or parallel execution?
- Team fit and maintainability: Can the team learn and maintain the approach? Does it fit the system architecture and available automation skills?
- Reporting and diagnosis: Does it show execution state and provide useful information for investigating failures?
- Total effort: What are the setup, implementation, maintenance, and execution demands?
IEEE lists IEEE 3407-2025 as an active standard for minimum requirements for end-to-end software testing automation tools, with guidance for automated testing in software integration environments. Its listing reports publication on April 24, 2026, and ANSI approval on August 26, 2026. The listing gives standards context for evaluation; it does not, by itself, establish which tool is best for a particular team.

How automation fits into software verification
Automation is one technique within a wider verification practice. In its 2021 developer verification guidance, NIST recommends 11 software verification techniques, including automated testing for consistency and to minimize human effort. That count is specific to a security-oriented guideline; it is not an industry adoption statistic or evidence that automation produces a particular return on investment.
