Is Tesla Full Self-Driving available in China?
The answer depends on what “available” means. On May 21, 2026, the South China Morning Post reported that Tesla had announced FSD Supervised availability in China and nine other countries. But on August 26, 2026, CnEVPost reported that Tesla was not offering FSD subscriptions in China and that the full suite was described on Tesla’s Chinese website as available “later.”

Those claims can coexist: an announcement or limited availability signal does not establish broad consumer access, subscription availability, or feature parity with other markets. The August report also noted a mismatch between country availability language on Tesla’s US website and its subscription-market list. There is no confirmed date for a broad rollout in the reporting reviewed through August 26, 2026. On April 23, Tesla said it was working to introduce FSD in China “as soon as possible,” according to CnEVPost’s account of the company’s Q1 financial report. The statement gave no timetable.

An earlier expectation from Elon Musk that China would approve FSD in February 2026 did not materialize, the April report said; it also cited China Daily’s denial of that plan. That history is a reason to distinguish forecasts from confirmed decisions. In August, Tesla China denied rumors that it had vacated its Shanghai data center, saying the center was operating normally and related work was progressing steadily. CnEVPost also reported that recruitment for driver-assistance roles was accelerating. These are signs of ongoing work, not a launch date or confirmation of customer access.
Has China approved Tesla FSD?
The May 2026 SCMP report described a regulatory nod before Tesla’s availability announcement, but did not specify the precise scope of authorization. The reviewed reports do not establish which features were authorized, which vehicles qualify, or whether approval applies broadly across China. An announcement of availability alone does not answer those questions.

“FSD Supervised” is the reported product framing. It should not be read as fully autonomous driving or as removing the driver’s responsibility to supervise the vehicle. The reviewed reporting does not establish that Chinese customers receive the same functions available in other markets.
Can Tesla owners in China subscribe to FSD?
As of CnEVPost’s August 26, 2026 report, Tesla was not offering FSD subscriptions in China. The report said the complete feature suite on Tesla’s Chinese site was still presented as arriving “later.” It did not establish a local price, subscription model, eligible vehicle configurations, or feature list. Why does the rollout matter for Tesla?
Driver assistance is a competitive issue in China, where local brands including Xiaomi and Huawei are expanding their offerings, according to CnEVPost. The SCMP reported that Gary Ng Cheuk-yan of Natixis Corporate and Investment Bank put Tesla’s China market share at 6% in 2025, compared with a 16% peak in 2020. That is Ng’s comparison as reported by the newspaper, not a figure attributed to Tesla. The sources do not establish that FSD’s rollout timing caused the market-share change, though a delayed full release could affect Tesla’s technology pitch against local rivals.
