What Tesla reportedly offered early Cybertruck owners
On July 5, 2024, Drive Tesla reported that some early Cybertruck owners were offered a replacement drive unit at no charge. According to that account, the offer surfaced during appointments owners had made for other service reasons. The available reporting therefore supports an offer to some owners at service visits, not a broad campaign proactively contacting all early buyers.

How the reported study differs from later Tesla actions
The July report concerned a study and should not be treated as the announcement of either later campaign. Tesla’s subsequent bulletins identify different conditions, components, and remedies.

Tesla’s public recall support draft describes the inverter action as covering certain 2024 model-year Cybertrucks built from November 6, 2023, through July 30, 2024, and says the replacement is free. Drive units and inverters are different parts
“Electric motor” is an accessible shorthand, but Tesla’s documents call the assembly in the early offer a drive unit. The later safety recall concerns the drive inverter, a distinct component. A recall remedy may involve an inverter, a drive unit, or both, depending on the VIN; the words are not interchangeable and the remedy for one vehicle cannot be inferred from the headline or another owner’s repair.

How Cybertruck owners can check their repair status
- Check the VIN. Use Tesla’s Cybertruck drive-inverter recall page and its VIN lookup to see whether the vehicle is included in the safety recall.
- Ask Tesla Service about campaigns. For a possible rear drive-unit campaign or a question about a past study offer, contact Tesla Service with the truck’s VIN. The October campaign bulletin makes vehicle applicability specific. Tesla bulletin SB-24-40-006
- Follow the remedy assigned to that VIN. Do not assume every affected truck receives the same part or repair. Tesla’s recall bulletin directs owners to vehicle-specific applicability. Tesla bulletin SB-24-40-009
Why this is not a DIY motor replacement
Tesla’s service manual describes drive-unit replacement as specialist work involving service-mode and Toolbox procedures, software reinstallation, and other vehicle-specific steps.
