The Tesla Model Y L is the six-seat, three-row version of the Model Y. It has a longer body and wheelbase than the five-seat Model Y Premium, and the extra row changes both passenger capacity and cargo space. The differences below come from Tesla’s Model Y Owner’s Manual, which gives measurements for all three rows of the Model Y L and only the first two rows of the five-seat model. Market availability, range, and pricing vary by country, so confirm those on your local Tesla order page.
Five differences between the Model Y L and the Model Y
1. It seats six across three rows
The manual labels the Model Y L a six-seater. The third row is the defining change: it adds two seats that the five-seat Model Y Premium does not have. If you regularly carry five people or more, this is the difference that decides the choice.

Child safety seats need a separate check. The manual includes child-safety-seat instructions, but it does not confirm that any particular seat fits in a particular Model Y L seating position. Check the manual’s guidance and the seat maker’s fit information before you buy.
2. It is longer and has a longer wheelbase
The Model Y L is longer overall, and its wheelbase, the distance between the front and rear axles, is longer too. The extra length comes from the body and does not change the front and rear overhang in the same way. The manual lists these dimensions for the two models:
#1 Best Overall
- Hot Wheels Tesla Model Y, HW Green Speed 1/10 [Gray] 37/250
| Measure | Model Y Premium (five seats) | Model Y L (six seats) | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Overall length | 4,797 mm | 4,976 mm | +179 mm |
| Wheelbase | 2,890 mm | 3,040 mm | +150 mm |
| Overall height | 1,624 mm | 1,668 mm | +44 mm |
Tesla’s manual states that the dimensions are approximate and may vary with options and other factors. It also warns that “Adding accessories can change dimensions and weights.” Measure your own garage and parking space before you assume the extra 179 mm will fit, especially if you use accessories such as roof racks.
3. The third row has less room than the second
The third row is usable, but it is tighter than the middle row. The manual lists the following measurements:
| Measure | Second row | Third row | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Headroom | 1,064 mm | 967 mm | −97 mm |
| Legroom | 1,009 mm | 788 mm | −221 mm |
These figures tell you how much space there is, but not how comfortable the row is for adults on longer trips. The manual does not make that claim, so test the seat position with the people who will actually sit there before you rely on it.

4. Cargo space depends on how the seats are set
Cargo volume changes with each seat configuration, so compare cargo figures only when the seating layout is stated. The manual lists the following volumes for the Model Y L and the five-seat Model Y Premium:
| Configuration | Cargo volume | Measured behind |
|---|---|---|
| Model Y Premium, all seats in use | 822 L | Second row |
| Model Y L, all seats in use | 420 L | Third row |
| Model Y L, third row folded | 1,076 L | Second row |
| Model Y L, second and third rows folded | 2,423 L | First row |
| Model Y L, six passengers, maximum total cargo | 536 L | Manual’s total figure for six passengers |
The 420 L figure is the space available with all six seats in use, so it is the number to use for everyday loads. The 536 L figure is a separate maximum total stated in the manual for six passengers, and the manual does not explain how it relates to the 420 L figure.
Accessories can also change what fits. Do not assume that cargo mats, liners, or organisers designed for the five-seat Model Y fit the Model Y L’s rear area. Check the product’s stated vehicle compatibility first.

5. Availability and specifications vary by region
The Model Y L is positioned as a three-row, six-seat model on Tesla’s international Model Y page, and it appears on Tesla’s China design page. Neither page provides a complete country-by-country list of where the Model Y L is sold, so availability depends on your market.

The available sources also do not provide a consistent comparison of range, battery, charging, or price between the Model Y L and the five-seat Model Y. Any such comparison should use the same market, configuration, test standard, and date. Tax and delivery details on regional pages also change, so treat them as current only on the day you check.
