Tesla has reportedly canceled the Cybertruck Range Extender, a planned battery pack that would have occupied part of the pickup bed. In a customer email reproduced by Electrek, Tesla said it was “no longer planning to sell the Range Extender for Cybertruck” and would refund each reservation deposit in full to the original payment method. Tesla has not publicly established that its wider sales decline caused the cancellation.
What Tesla canceled
The Range Extender was a supplemental battery pack designed to sit in the Cybertruck’s bed. It was never launched and was not a component removed from trucks already delivered.

- Reported planned price: $16,000.
- Bed-space trade-off: about one-third of the pickup bed.
- Earlier estimated combined range: more than 445 miles, according to figures reported by Electrek. This was a pre-launch estimate, not an independently tested result.
- Reservation deposit: $2,000, reported as non-refundable before Tesla canceled the product.
Electrek reported these specifications and the cancellation on May 7, 2025, based on a customer communication.
Will reservation holders get their $2,000 back?
The reported Tesla email says yes. Its wording states: “As a result, we will be refunding your deposit in full. The amount will be returned to the original payment method used for the transaction.” That is Tesla’s stated process; it does not confirm that every individual refund had already settled when the report was published.

If the credit does not appear after the processing period shown in their account or payment provider, they should contact Tesla through the order-support channel tied to the reservation.
How the sales figures fit—and what they do not prove
The “sales plummeting” description refers to Tesla-wide results, not Range Extender orders or Cybertruck sales. Tesla’s 2025 Form 10-K reported a $6.66 billion, or 9%, decrease in automotive sales revenue in 2025 versus 2024, along with an approximately 8% decline in cash deliveries. The Associated Press separately reported a 13% year-over-year fall in Tesla’s first-quarter 2025 sales.

- DEAD ZONES, ELIMINATED: Bring WiFi 5 to the rooms your router cannot reach - bedrooms, garage, basement, and backyard - with up to 1,500 sq. ft. of added coverage for up to 25 devices, from any wall outlet
- EASY SET UP: Use the NETGEAR Nighthawk app for guided setup, or press WPS on your router and the extender
- STREAM AND BROWSE WITHOUT BUFFERING: Keep HD video, calls, and everyday devices smooth where signal was weak, with up to 1.2 Gbps (AC1200) across the 2.4 and 5 GHz bands. Real-world speeds vary depending on connected devices and internet plan
- WIRED CONNECTION WHEN YOU NEED IT MOST: Connect a smart TV, game console, or desktop straight to the extender for a stable wired link. This is a 10/100 Mbps Fast Ethernet port, not Gigabit
- WORKS WITH THE ROUTER YOU ALREADY HAVE: Connects to any router or gateway from Xfinity, Spectrum, AT&T, Cox, or Verizon and rebroadcasts its signal. It extends your router, it does not replace it, with no closed ecosystem to lock you in
| Reported measure | Period and scope | What it shows |
|---|---|---|
| $6.66 billion (9%) lower automotive sales revenue | Tesla companywide, 2025 versus 2024; Tesla Form 10-K | A full-year automotive revenue decline, not a Cybertruck Range Extender figure |
| About 8% lower cash deliveries | Tesla companywide, 2025 versus 2024; Tesla Form 10-K | A delivery decline across Tesla’s vehicles |
| 13% lower sales | Tesla companywide, first quarter 2025 versus first quarter 2024; Associated Press | Quarterly context, not a cancellation explanation |
Neither Tesla’s filing nor the AP report establishes that falling sales caused the Range Extender decision. No Cybertruck-specific reservation total or named Tesla explanation for the cancellation has been verified.
What Cybertruck owners can still buy from Tesla
Tesla’s current Cybertruck FAQ lists equipment for charging and supplying electrical power. These products do not add driving range and are not described by Tesla as replacements for the canceled battery pack.

- 【No more dead zones】: This WiFi Range Extender extend your wireless network coverage to up to 1500 square feet for approximately 20 devices, including streaming, online gaming, video conferencing, or with HD video. Support dual band 2.4G and 5G , up to 1200Mbps(When the Extender is working in repeater mode, it does not increase your network speed, but extend wider wireless coverage. WiFi repeaters all work like this);
- 【Multi-Mode Application】--- AP/Repeater/Router mode to meet different demand easily. Repeater Mode is for extending WiFi coverage of an existing wireless network. AP Mode is for covering a wired network to a wireless network. Router Mode is used like a simplified version router.
| Equipment or feature | Primary purpose | Range-extender substitute? |
|---|---|---|
| Mobile Connector | Charging the vehicle from a compatible electrical outlet | No; it supplies charging power rather than onboard battery capacity |
| Powershare Outlet Adapter | Using the Cybertruck to provide power to compatible devices or equipment | No; it delivers power from the truck and does not increase driving range |
| Bed and cabin outlets | Convenience power outlets integrated into the truck | No |
| Powershare Home Backup hardware | Using the vehicle and compatible home equipment for backup power | No; it is a stationary power-delivery setup, not an added traction battery |
Availability and compatibility depend on the specific Cybertruck configuration and Tesla’s current requirements. The FAQ does not present any of these items as a substitute for the canceled bed-mounted battery.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why Tesla canceled it
The reason remains unconfirmed. The reported customer email announces the decision and refund but does not give a rationale. It is therefore accurate to connect the cancellation with a planned product that will not reach market, while treating broader Tesla sales weakness as context rather than a proven cause.

- Expect the reservation deposit to be returned to the original payment method under Tesla’s stated refund process.
- Separate charging and backup-power accessories from range-improving hardware when comparing Cybertruck equipment.
