For a small Terraria world, the Official Terraria Wiki lists 500 MB of free RAM as a reference point. That is not a universal requirement: memory use changes with world size and player count. The Official Terraria Wiki’s published requirements do not specify a minimum CPU model, core count or clock speed, so any precise processor recommendation would be guesswork.
Playing with friends? Godlike.Host runs hosted Terraria servers from 10 data-center locations, with free DDoS protection.
For a short co-op game or home network, Host & Play is the simplest route. A dedicated server is better when the server should run separately from a player’s game, while rented or cloud hosting is suited to a world that should remain available without your home computer running. Whichever route you choose, the default game port is 7777, and outside connections usually require firewall and NAT configuration.

What Terraria’s published requirements actually establish
The Official Terraria Wiki’s server page is the clearest source for a baseline, but it is deliberately limited. It gives one memory figure for a specific situation, identifies some legacy software dependencies, and leaves CPU sizing open.
| Item | Published information | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Memory | 500 MB of free RAM for a small world | An approximate small-world reference. The same page says usage depends on world size and number of players. |
| CPU | No minimum model, core count or clock speed stated | There is no evidence-based processor specification to buy against. Measure the workload you intend to run instead. |
| Software | .NET Framework 4.0 and XNA Framework appear in the page’s system-requirements section | These entries may reflect legacy Windows guidance. Confirm requirements for the current game files, server package and operating system. |
| Maximum players | 16 is the default maximum, and the setting can be changed | The setting is a cap, not a promise that one machine will deliver good performance for 16 players. |
| Network port | TCP port 7777 by default | Players outside the host’s local network may need port forwarding and firewall rules. |
The memory number should not be turned into a blanket purchase recommendation. It does not include an adjustment formula for larger worlds, modifications or unusual player loads. It also does not say that every release, operating system or server configuration will stay below that amount. Treat it as a starting reference, then leave room for the operating system and any other services on the machine.

- Wide Compatibility: With the RJ45 Connector, network cable can be perfectly compatible with computers, laptops, modems, routers, PS5, X-Box and other networking devices. It can also be fully backward compatible with Cat7, Cat6e, Cat6, Cat5e, Cat5
The CPU omission is equally important. A listing that claims Terraria requires a particular processor generation or a fixed number of cores is adding information that this official reference does not provide. CPU demand can vary with the world, activity and other software sharing the host, but the supplied requirements do not quantify those effects.
Choose the hosting model before sizing hardware
Hardware is only one part of the decision. The right setup depends on whether someone must keep a game session open, how often friends play, and how much control you need over files and settings.

- Everyone on a home network can use the LAN, while internet players may still encounter router and firewall restrictions.
- It is the least suitable choice if friends need to join while the host is away.
A dedicated server on a home computer
A dedicated server runs separately from the game client. The wiki describes server software included with Windows installations and downloadable server files for Linux; the exact packaging can change, so use the files that match the current game version.
- The server can remain running while players connect and disconnect independently.
- World files and server settings are easier to manage without tying them to one player’s game session.
- The host must keep the machine powered on, patched and reachable, and must handle backups and access control.
- Internet players generally need a router rule forwarding the game port to the server and a firewall rule allowing it.
Rented hosting or a cloud machine
A rented or cloud-hosted machine can keep a world online without using a home computer. The available evidence does not establish current provider prices, locations, support levels or included resources, so compare those details directly before committing to a service.
- Availability is usually easier to maintain because the machine is intended to run continuously.
- You still need to configure the game server, its files and its firewall unless the service explicitly manages them.
- Control over the operating system and world data varies by plan.
- Monthly cost, data-center location and support quality are provider-specific and cannot be inferred from the Terraria requirements page.
| Decision factor | Host & Play | Home dedicated server | Rented or cloud server |
|---|---|---|---|
| Must a player’s game stay open? | Yes, for the host’s session | No; the server process runs separately | No; the remote machine runs separately |
| Setup effort | Lowest | Moderate: install, configure and maintain files | Varies by provider and operating system |
| Outside-home access | May require home router and firewall changes | Usually requires NAT forwarding and firewall changes | Requires the provider’s firewall and the server’s network rules |
| Availability | Limited to the host’s session | As long as the home machine is powered and connected | Designed for continuous availability, subject to the provider |
| Control of world and configuration files | Basic game-session controls | High, with direct access to local files | Depends on the plan and access provided |
| Price information established here | No separate hosting charge stated | No separate hosting charge stated | Current provider prices are not established |
How to plan RAM without inventing a formula
Start with the small-world reference, then account for what the official page says can increase usage: world size and player count. There is no published equation that converts either variable into a guaranteed RAM total, and the source does not provide a separate allowance for modded worlds.

For a practical setup, check memory while the server is running the largest world and the busiest normal session you expect. Leave enough free memory for the operating system and any monitoring, backup or remote-administration tools. If the machine begins swapping to disk, players may see pauses even though the game itself has not crashed; closing unrelated programs or moving the server to a machine with more available memory is safer than assuming the small-world figure covers every case.
Do not purchase additional RAM solely because a guide lists a large player cap. The default cap of 16 can be changed, but the Official Terraria Wiki’s published requirements do not connect that setting to a memory formula or a performance guarantee. Size from observed use and your particular world rather than from the cap alone.
What to do about the unspecified CPU requirement
There is no official CPU minimum in the Official Terraria Wiki’s published server requirements. Consequently, it is not possible to state that Terraria needs a certain number of cores, a particular Intel or AMD series, or a specific clock speed without another source.

Great for router-to-PC connections, modem-to-TV setups, gaming consoles, workstations, printers and other home network equipment that needs a longer Ethernet cable.
Use the processor already available for a small test: run the intended world, invite the expected number of players, and watch CPU utilization during busy events. If the server shares a computer with a game client or other services, those workloads matter too. A processor that is adequate for a quiet co-op world may behave differently when the world is larger or the machine is doing unrelated work. This testing approach gives you evidence for your configuration without turning an unsupported hardware guess into a requirement.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Network requirements: port 7777, NAT and firewalls
Terraria listens on TCP port 7777 by default. On a home network, players on the same LAN may be able to connect directly, but someone joining from the internet normally reaches a router first. Network address translation (NAT) then prevents the connection from reaching the server unless you create a port-forwarding rule to the server computer.
Allow the game through the host operating system’s firewall as well. A correct router rule cannot help if the server machine silently blocks incoming traffic. For a cloud deployment, the wiki says to open port 7777 on both TCP and UDP, then apply the provider’s own security-group or firewall instructions. Follow the current server package’s documentation if it changes the protocol or port.

For a home LAN, the setup guide recommends Ethernet because it is almost always faster than wireless. A wired connection is an optional improvement for stability; it is not a universal requirement for running a server.
Setup paths and the version caveat
The setup guide warns that it may be outdated or below current quality standards. Use it to understand the available approaches, but verify names, file locations and launch options against the current game installation and server files.
Host & Play
- Use the game’s multiplayer flow and select Host & Play.
- Select the world and player settings for the session.
- For a LAN, have other players connect through the local network. For internet play, confirm the host’s firewall and router conditions before troubleshooting the game itself.
- Keep the host session running for as long as the group needs access; ending it ends that hosting session.
Dedicated server
- Obtain the server files that match the installed game version and operating system. Windows installations and Linux downloads may be packaged differently.
- Start the server interactively first so you can see prompts, errors and the selected world.
- Once the settings are known, use the server’s configuration-file option if you want repeatable startup rather than entering choices each time.
- Set the world, player limit and network options, then record where the world files are stored.
- Test a local connection before exposing the server to the internet. Only after that should you configure NAT forwarding and external firewall rules.
- Back up the world files and stop the server cleanly when performing updates or maintenance.
Rented or cloud machine
- Choose an operating system and plan that provide access to the server files and the amount of memory you have validated for your world.
- Install the matching dedicated-server package and confirm that it starts locally on the machine.
- Open the required game traffic in the cloud firewall or security group; the wiki’s cloud guidance calls for TCP and UDP on port 7777.
- Connect from an external network, not only from the cloud machine itself, to verify routing and firewall behavior.
- Arrange world backups, updates and restart procedures before inviting the wider group.
Player limits are settings, not capacity guarantees
The default maximum is 16 players, and the value can be changed at startup or in the server configuration file. That controls how many connections the server accepts; it does not establish that a particular CPU, memory amount or internet connection will handle that many players smoothly.
When deciding whether to raise the limit, consider the largest world and the busiest simultaneous activity you actually expect. Test gradually, watch memory and CPU, and keep a rollback copy of the configuration. If performance degrades, reducing concurrent players or returning to the previous setting is a more defensible fix than buying hardware based on an unverified specification.
Common connection and performance failures
Players on the same home network cannot join
- Confirm the server is running and that the joining player is using the host’s local address.
- Check that the host firewall permits the server process.
- Make sure both players are on the intended LAN rather than an isolated guest network.
Internet players time out
- Verify that the router forwards the configured game port to the correct computer’s local address.
- Confirm the host firewall allows incoming traffic.
- Check that the public address has not changed and that the router is not behind another NAT device.
- For cloud hosting, review both the operating-system firewall and the provider’s network rules, including the required TCP and UDP entries.
The server slows down or runs out of memory
- Observe resource use with the actual world and player load rather than relying on the small-world baseline.
- Close unrelated applications and check whether the operating system is swapping.
- Reduce simultaneous players or world activity to identify the trigger.
- If the workload exceeds the machine’s available resources, move the server to a machine with more headroom and retest.
Which option should you choose?
- Choose Host & Play when one person is always present, sessions are short, and the group wants the least administration.
- Choose a home dedicated server when you need separate server uptime, direct control of world files, and are comfortable managing power, updates, backups, router settings and firewalls.
- Choose rented or cloud hosting when the world should remain available without your home computer running, and you are willing to compare provider-specific cost, location, support and access.
Before opening the world to others, verify the current server package, test the chosen world under its expected load, and confirm local and external connections separately. The official memory figure is a useful small-world reference; it is not a complete specification for every Terraria server.
