If friends cannot join your Terraria dedicated server, port 7777 is only one possible failure point. First verify the server’s configured port and process, then test locally, allow the server through the host firewall, forward that same port to the computer’s current private IPv4 address, and check your router, ISP or cloud firewall. Internet players must use your external IP and the port the server is actually listening on—not 127.0.0.1 or a stale address.

What port 7777 does in Terraria
A dedicated Terraria server listens on TCP port 7777 by default. The number is not a permanent requirement: the server can be configured to use another port in serverconfig.txt, for example port=7777 for the default. The value in that file is authoritative. If it says port=27800, players must connect to port 27800 and the router or provider firewall must allow and forward 27800 instead of 7777.

A successful internet connection has several separate stages:
- The dedicated-server process must be running and listening on the expected port.
- The operating-system firewall must allow the server application or inbound port.
- A home router must translate the public connection to the server computer’s private IPv4 address.
- A cloud provider’s security group or network firewall must allow the port when the server is hosted remotely.
- The player must enter the host’s current external address and the configured port.
Any one of these can produce the same “Connecting to [IP]:7777” symptom. Opening a port on only one layer does not automatically open it on the others.

Start with the server process and configured port
Read the server console
Start the dedicated server and watch its console output. It should remain running rather than closing immediately, and it should report the world loading successfully and the port on which it is listening. If the window exits, reports a configuration error, or never reaches a listening state, router changes cannot fix the problem. Correct the server startup issue first.
Check serverconfig.txt
- Open the configuration file used by the server startup command.
- Find the line beginning with
port=. - Record the exact number after the equals sign. If there is no custom value, use the default 7777.
- Save the file, restart the dedicated server, and confirm the console reflects the same port.
Do not assume that a launcher, shortcut or hosted control panel is using the file you edited. A server started with a different configuration path can listen on another port. Check the command or panel settings and make sure the join instructions match the instance that is actually running.

In Terraria’s multiplayer join screen, enter the server address and the configured port. A player who enters an address without the custom port may be sent to the default 7777, while the server is listening elsewhere. Conversely, entering :7777 does not help if the server was changed to another number.
Separate a local server problem from an internet problem
Testing from inside the same home network is the fastest way to identify which layer is failing. Use a second computer or console on the LAN, not the server itself, and connect to the host computer’s private address (usually a private IPv4 address assigned by the router).
| LAN result | Likely fault area | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Another LAN device cannot connect | Server process, configured port, host firewall, or wrong private address | Recheck the console, configuration and firewall before touching port forwarding |
| LAN connection works, internet connection fails | Router NAT, external address, carrier-grade NAT, ISP restriction, or provider firewall | Verify forwarding, public addressing and external firewall rules |
| LAN and internet connections both work intermittently | Changing private/public address, unstable server process, or a rule pointing to the wrong device | Reserve the host’s LAN address and check for process or network changes |
A local success proves the world and basic server process are usable; it does not prove that the router is forwarding traffic from the internet.
Use the correct address
Never give players 127.0.0.1
127.0.0.1 is the loopback address. It means “this same device,” so it works only for a client running on the server computer. Friends must use the host’s external IP for an internet connection, or the host’s private LAN address when they are physically on the same network.

Find the host’s private address
The router’s forwarding rule must target the server computer’s current private IPv4 address. On the host, view the active network adapter’s IPv4 address in the operating system’s network settings or command-line network information. Ignore addresses belonging to disconnected adapters, virtual machines and VPN interfaces unless the server is intentionally using one of them.
Recognize a 169. address
An address beginning with 169 indicates that the computer did not receive a normal local address from the network. Fix the local connection—check the cable or Wi-Fi, renew the DHCP lease, restart the router if necessary, and confirm that the adapter is enabled—before creating a forwarding rule. A router cannot forward reliably to a host that has not obtained a valid LAN address.
Give internet players the external address
Friends connecting over the internet need the router’s current external IP plus the configured port. The external address is not the same as the server’s private address. If the ISP changes the external IP, previously shared join details stop working until you provide the new address.
Allow Terraria through the host firewall
A running process can still be unreachable because the computer’s firewall drops unsolicited inbound traffic. The official setup guidance specifically calls out allowing TerrariaServer.exe or the server port.
Recommended Free Tools
- Open the host operating system’s firewall management screen.
- Create or enable an inbound rule for the dedicated-server executable, or create an inbound rule for the configured port.
- Use the network profiles that apply to the host’s connection. A rule limited to a different profile will not match the active network.
- Apply the rule, restart the server if the firewall prompts for it, and repeat the LAN test.
Allowing the application is often easier when the server may change ports; allowing a specific port is more restrictive and makes the intended exposure clear. Do not create broad “allow everything” rules. If third-party endpoint security has its own firewall, check that product separately; the operating-system rule does not override an additional network filter.
When a firewall prompt appears at first launch, verify that it refers to the dedicated server and not an unrelated Terraria client. A client rule alone does not necessarily permit the server executable to accept inbound connections.

Forward the port on a residential router
Home players behind NAT need a port-forwarding rule. NAT lets many private devices share one public address, but unsolicited internet traffic is discarded unless the router is told where to send it. The official setup guidance requires forwarding before outside players can use the external IP.
Prepare a stable target address
Routers commonly assign private addresses dynamically. If the server receives a different address after a reboot, a rule that still points to the old address silently sends traffic to the wrong device. Reserve a DHCP lease for the server in the router, or configure a static private address using values appropriate for that LAN. Confirm the address remains unchanged before testing.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Create the forwarding rule
- Sign in to the router’s administration interface.
- Open the section labeled Port Forwarding, NAT, Virtual Server or a similar term.
- Add a rule whose external port is the server’s configured port. For the default, use 7777.
- Set the destination or internal host to the server computer’s reserved private IPv4 address.
- Set the internal port to the same configured port unless your router deliberately supports a different external-to-internal mapping.
- For a home Terraria server, allow TCP traffic for the chosen port, then save or apply the rule.
- Restart networking or the router only if the interface requires it, and verify that the forwarding target did not change.
Forwarding external TCP 7777 to one machine does not forward it to every computer in the house. A router normally cannot send the same external port to two internal hosts at once; each server needs its own configured port and matching rule.
Check for double NAT
If an ISP gateway feeds a second personal router, both devices may perform NAT. Forward the port through both layers, or place one device in the appropriate bridge or access-point mode according to the equipment’s documentation. A rule on only the inner router leaves the outer NAT with no destination.
Identify carrier-grade NAT
Some ISPs place customers behind carrier-grade NAT, so the address shown by the home router is not a directly reachable public IPv4 address. In that situation, a correct local forwarding rule still cannot accept unsolicited connections from the internet. Ask the ISP whether the connection has a public IPv4 address or whether inbound port forwarding is supported. If it is not, use a VPN overlay or hosted server instead of repeatedly changing the home rule.
Check cloud and hosted-server firewalls
A cloud virtual machine may not have a residential router at all. It still commonly has at least two firewall layers: the operating system and the provider’s security group, network ACL or firewall policy. Open the configured Terraria port in the provider control panel as well as on the machine.

For cloud deployments, the documented requirement is to allow both TCP and UDP for port 7777, or both protocols for the custom port. Apply the rule to the correct instance and network, restrict the source to the players’ addresses when practical, and then verify the operating-system firewall. A provider rule attached to another instance has no effect on the server you are testing.
Cloud addresses can also change when an instance is stopped and started unless a reserved address is used. Update the address shared with players after such a change.
Test from outside the home network
Do not rely solely on a test made from the host’s own LAN. Some routers do not support NAT loopback, so an internal attempt to the external address can fail even though real internet players can connect. Have a friend test from a different network, or use a device on cellular data with the Terraria client.
- Confirm the server console remains open while the test runs.
- Use the current external IP and the exact configured port.
- Watch whether the server console records an incoming connection attempt.
- If no attempt appears, the traffic is being stopped before it reaches the server—usually by the address, NAT, ISP or provider firewall.
- If the attempt appears but the client is rejected, return to the server process, world configuration and host firewall.
After every router or address change, repeat the external test. A successful test yesterday does not prove that today’s private lease, public IP or firewall policy is unchanged.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What “port 7777 is open” can mean—and why it may still fail
Port-checking websites and router status pages can be misleading when the server process is not listening at the moment of the test. Many checks report a port as closed unless an application is actively accepting connections. Start the Terraria server first, then test from outside.
An “open” result also proves only one path and protocol. A home rule allowing TCP does not prove that a cloud security group allows UDP, and a provider rule does not prove that the operating-system firewall accepts the packet. Match the test to the deployment type and configured port.
Best Value
Likewise, a server that works on the LAN may still be invisible externally because the router is forwarding to a stale address or the ISP uses carrier-grade NAT. Treat each layer as an independent checkpoint rather than assuming one green indicator validates the whole route.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUse a custom port safely
Changing the port can help when another service already uses 7777 or when a hosting environment assigns a specific port. It does not bypass NAT or firewalls. Change the value in serverconfig.txt, restart the server, and update every dependent setting:
- the Terraria join screen used by every player;
- the host firewall’s application or port rule;
- the router’s external and internal forwarding values;
- the cloud provider’s security-group or firewall rule;
- any written instructions or bookmarks containing the old port.
Keep the external and internal ports identical unless you have a specific reason to map them differently. Using the same number at every layer makes errors easier to spot.
Fallbacks when port forwarding is impossible
VPN overlay
The official Terraria guidance names Hamachi and Radmin VPN as alternatives. Every player must install the same VPN client, join the same virtual network, and use the host’s VPN-assigned address. The host should still allow the server through its local firewall, and the server must be running on the interface and port the VPN can reach.
This approach moves the connection path from the public internet to a private overlay. It avoids changing the home router, but it adds setup for every player and another dependency that must remain connected. Do not give players the host’s public IP when the group is intentionally using the VPN address.
Hosted server
A Terraria server hosted on a cloud or game-server provider avoids exposing a home router port. The host or administrator must still open the assigned port in the provider firewall and the server’s own firewall. Confirm which port and protocols the service assigns; they may differ from the default 7777.
| Approach | Who changes settings | Exposure | Ongoing maintenance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Home port forwarding | Host only | One port exposed on the home public address | Keep the private lease and public address current; maintain firewall rules |
| VPN overlay | Host and every player | Virtual private network rather than a public listener | Players must remain in the same VPN network and keep the software connected |
| Hosted server | Server administrator | Hosted endpoint governed by provider and server firewalls | Maintain provider rules, server updates and the assigned address or port |
Symptom-based fixes
“Connection timed out”
- Confirm the server is running and listening.
- Verify the player used the current external IP and configured port.
- Check the host firewall, router forwarding target and ISP or carrier-grade NAT.
- For cloud servers, check the provider firewall and both TCP and UDP rules.
“Connection refused” or an immediate failure
- Check that the server process is actually listening on that port.
- Look for a typo in
serverconfig.txtor a launcher using another configuration file. - Check whether another application already occupies the chosen port.
- Allow the dedicated-server executable through the host firewall.
LAN works, but nobody outside can join
- Reserve the server’s private address and point forwarding to it.
- Check double NAT and carrier-grade NAT.
- Confirm the external address has not changed.
- Test from a genuinely different network rather than relying on NAT loopback.
The problem began after a reboot
Compare the host’s current private address with the router rule. A DHCP reassignment is the most common explanation. Also check whether the ISP changed the external address and whether the server restarted with a different configuration or port.
A complete verification checklist
- Process: The dedicated server stays open, loads the intended world and reports a listening port.
- Configuration:
serverconfig.txtcontains the port you intend to publish. - Client: Every player enters that same port.
- Address: LAN players use the private address; internet players use the current external address; nobody uses
127.0.0.1unless playing on the host itself. - Local network: A second LAN device can connect.
- Host firewall: The dedicated-server executable or configured port is allowed on the active network profile.
- Router: The selected external port forwards to the server’s current private IPv4 address.
- ISP path: The connection is not blocked by double NAT or carrier-grade NAT.
- Cloud path: A hosted deployment allows the required port and protocols in its provider firewall; for the documented cloud case, both TCP and UDP are allowed.
- External test: A player on another network can reach the running server after all changes are applied.
Work through the checklist in that order. It prevents spending time on router settings when the process is not listening and prevents reinstalling the world when the real problem is an address or NAT boundary.
