To host a Terraria Journey Mode server, use the normal dedicated-server process, load a Journey world, and make sure every player joins with a Journey character. The main extra setup is choosing who can change Journey powers: the server configuration supports individual permission settings for locking powers, making them host-only, or allowing everyone to use them.

What makes a Journey server different?
A Journey server is not a separate kind of server executable. It uses Terraria’s ordinary dedicated-server process and network setup; the important differences are the world’s mode, the characters allowed to join it, and the Journey Power Menu available to players. The official Journey Mode reference describes the mode as a way to explore Terraria with easier access to items and mechanics than its usual progression provides.

That changes the group’s expectations as much as the server configuration. Research and duplication can remove much of the resource-gathering pressure, while controls for difficulty, enemy spawns, time, weather, and infection spread can alter the shared world. Decide whether those tools are part of the intended play style before inviting the group.
| Area | Classic/normal server | Journey server |

| Character and world pairing | Journey-only pairing does not apply. | Journey worlds can be accessed only by Journey characters, and Journey characters can play only in Journey worlds. Every player needs a matching Journey character. Official Journey reference |
| Resource progression | Progression centers on acquiring resources through normal play. | Research an item to its required amount, then duplicate it indefinitely through the Duplication menu. The required amount varies by item; the reference does not give one universal threshold. Official Journey reference |
| Enemy difficulty | World difficulty is selected as part of the ordinary world/server setup. | A live Journey slider ranges from 0.5× to 3× normal difficulty, corresponding to Journey, Classic, Expert, and Master settings. Official Journey reference |
| Server-side power controls | No Journey-specific per-power settings. | Individual configuration keys can lock powers, reserve changes to the host, or allow everyone to change them. Dedicated-server reference |
| Environment and spawns | Does not provide the Journey Power Menu’s controls. | Journey powers can govern enemy spawn rate, time, weather, infection spread, and other behavior, subject to permission settings and game rules. Official Journey reference |
Before you start: settle compatibility and play rules
Require the right character and world
The pairing is strict: a non-Journey character cannot join a Journey world, and a Journey character cannot play in a non-Journey world. Tell everyone to create or select a Journey character before they try to connect. If a player cannot join, verify the character and loaded world modes before changing network settings.

Choose how much of Journey to allow
There are three useful policy starting points. An unrestricted sandbox allows players to change available powers and use research and duplication freely. A host-controlled world lets players participate while reserving power changes to the host. A challenge-oriented arrangement locks most or all powers the group does not want. These are group rules, not preset server profiles: configure each supported power deliberately and communicate what is allowed.
Put the agreement in the server MOTD or a pinned group message. This helps prevent different assumptions about duplication, god mode, difficulty, spawn rates, or world-management powers from becoming a source of conflict.

- Create or select Journey content. Prepare a Journey world and tell each player to use a Journey character. The two modes are mutually restricted, so matching them is a prerequisite, not an optional preference. Official Journey reference
- Start Terraria’s dedicated server. Use the normal dedicated-server process. It can be configured interactively or started using a configuration file containing startup parameters. The official Dedicated Server reference documents the server options.
- Select Journey difficulty for the world. The dedicated-server option list identifies difficulty values as 0 for Normal/Classic, 1 for Expert, 2 for Master, and 3 for Journey. Use value 3 when creating or selecting the intended Journey world, then verify which world actually loaded. Do not confuse this startup/world selection value with the separate in-game Journey enemy-difficulty slider. Dedicated-server reference
- Set ordinary server options. Choose the world path and port, and decide whether to use a password, MOTD, ban list, secure mode, or optional UPnP/NPC streaming settings. The dedicated-server reference documents port 7777; whether to retain it or use another supported value depends on the server’s network arrangement. Dedicated-server reference
- Configure Journey permissions. Add the per-power
journeypermission_*settings appropriate to the group’s policy. The documented values are0to lock a power for everyone,1to allow only the host to change it, and2to allow everyone to change it. Set the relevant powers before inviting players. Dedicated-server reference - Record the rules. Put the agreed limits on duplication and powers in the MOTD or a pinned message. Be explicit about the powers that are allowed, host-only, or locked; “Journey rules” alone may mean different things to different players.
- Test with both roles. Join as the host and as an ordinary player. Check that the intended Journey world loaded, that each player’s Journey Power Menu exposes the expected controls, and that a regular player cannot change host-only or locked powers. This is a configuration check to perform on your server, not a claim that a particular configuration has been independently tested.
The wiki documents the option names and permission values, but this guide does not supply a complete ready-to-paste configuration file: the correct world path and other startup parameters depend on the host’s setup. Use the dedicated-server reference for the exact option syntax and avoid assuming that a permission key not configured behaves a particular way.
Journey permission settings: what the values mean
Journey permissions are set individually rather than as one master switch. The value describes who may change that power; it is not a general role system for every server action.
| Value | Meaning for that power | When it fits |
|---|---|---|
0 |
Locked for everyone. | Use for a power the group does not want changed. |
1 |
Only the host may change it. | Use when players may use a host-approved setting but the host should control changes. |
2 |
Everyone may change it. | Use when the group agrees to let players manage the power themselves. |
These are the documented values for individual Journey permission keys in the dedicated-server reference. Representative keys include:
journeypermission_godmodefor god mode.journeypermission_setdifficultyfor the Journey difficulty control.journeypermission_setspawnratefor enemy spawn-rate control.journeypermission_time_setfrozenfor freezing or changing time.journeypermission_rain_setfrozenfor rain control.journeypermission_wind_setfrozenfor wind control.journeypermission_biomespread_setfrozenfor infection-spread control.journeypermission_increaseplacementrangefor increased placement range.
The permission list is intentionally granular. A group might allow environmental convenience but lock god mode, or let the host adjust difficulty while keeping the spawn-rate decision centralized. Select settings power by power instead of assuming one permission value gives the desired balance for all of them.

Research and duplication change resource scarcity
Players can research items by placing them into the Research function. Once the required research amount for an item has been completed, it can be duplicated indefinitely through the Duplication menu. Because the amount required is item-specific, do not promise players that one sample is enough for every item. Official Journey reference
This system can shift the group’s progression from collecting enough materials toward finding and researching an item in the first place. That may be exactly what the group wants for a creative or exploratory world; it may also undercut a resource-gathering challenge. Server permissions govern changing Journey powers, while the group’s rules should also say whether and how players are expected to use research and duplication.

Difficulty is adjustable after the world starts
Journey difficulty is not simply the server’s initial world-selection value. Its slider can move from 0.5× to 3× normal enemy difficulty: 0.5× is Journey, 1× Classic, 2× Expert, and 3× Master. Increasing it can bring in the corresponding difficulty’s enemy statistics, AI changes, drop behavior, and exclusive content. Decide who may change it and whether the group expects a stable challenge level. Official Journey reference
The server configuration’s journeypermission_setdifficulty setting controls who may change the power. It is separate from the dedicated-server startup value 3, which selects Journey when creating or selecting the world. Conflating these two controls can lead to a server that loaded the intended Journey world but still permits more in-game difficulty changes than the host intended.
Spawn-rate control affects the whole group’s pace
The Journey enemy-spawn slider ranges from 0×, where ordinary enemies and critters do not spawn, to 10× the normal rate, subject to game rules and exceptions. A low rate can reduce interruptions; a high rate can change farming and event pacing substantially. Agree on who controls the slider rather than treating it as a purely personal preference. Official Journey reference
Time and weather can alter the shared environment
Depending on permissions, players may be able to set or freeze time, alter time speed, freeze or change rain and wind, and control other environmental behavior. Since these affect the shared world, host-only control is a reasonable choice for groups that want convenience without letting every player reset conditions. The relevant time, rain, and wind permission keys are listed in the configuration section above.
Infection control stops future spread, not prior spread
Journey includes a control to freeze Corruption, Crimson, and Hallow spread. The documented effect prevents further spread; it does not reverse areas already converted or undo the initial Hardmode diagonal stripes. If the group’s goal is to halt future spread, this control addresses that goal, but it is not a restoration tool for a world already affected. Official Journey reference
Personal powers deserve their own policy
God mode and increased placement range can affect how players approach danger and building. Because permissions are individual, the host can lock or reserve these while allowing different Journey controls. Explain the group’s expectations clearly: a server can be configured to govern who changes a power, but the rules message is what communicates the intended play style.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Ordinary server settings still matter
Journey Mode changes gameplay controls; it does not replace the usual decisions involved in running a dedicated server. The dedicated-server reference lists standard options including the world path, port, password, MOTD, ban list, secure mode, and optional UPnP and NPC streaming settings. Dedicated-server reference
- World path: Confirm the server is loading the Journey world you intend to host. A correct Journey permission setup cannot compensate for selecting the wrong world.
- Port: The documented port is 7777. Use the value appropriate to your configuration, and make sure players are given the connection details for the server you actually started.
- Password and ban list: Decide how to limit access and handle unwanted connections before sharing the server details.
- MOTD: Use this to communicate the Journey rules and any password or gameplay expectations relevant to joining.
- Secure mode, UPnP, and NPC streaming: These are optional server settings in the reference. Choose them according to the host’s administration and network needs rather than enabling them solely because the world uses Journey Mode.
If you would rather not manage a local server’s network setup, uptime, backups, and configuration yourself, managed Terraria hosting is an alternative to investigate. The relevant trade-off is less hands-on server administration versus relying on a hosting service’s available controls; verify that any service you consider supports the Journey configuration options you need. No provider or plan is specified here.

Test the setup before opening the world
A short role-based check can catch mode mismatches and permission mistakes before they affect a larger group. Test the actual server instance and configuration that players will use.
- Have the host connect with a Journey character and confirm the intended Journey world loaded.
- Have an ordinary player connect with a Journey character. Confirm that access works and that the player sees the expected Journey controls.
- For each power configured as host-only, check that the host can change it and the ordinary player cannot.
- For each locked power, confirm neither role can change it as intended.
- For powers open to everyone, check that a regular player can change them if that is the agreed policy.
- Review the MOTD or pinned rules with both roles so the communicated policy matches the actual settings.
If a check fails, first verify that you changed the permission key for the specific power being tested and that the server loaded the configuration and intended world. The documented values express who may change a particular power; avoid diagnosing every unexpected result as a network problem.
Common setup mistakes and how to correct them
A player cannot join the Journey world
Check the character mode first. A Journey world accepts only Journey characters, and Journey characters are restricted to Journey worlds. If the modes match, verify that the server loaded the intended world rather than relying on the name of the world file alone. Official Journey reference
The world is Journey, but the difficulty feels wrong
Separate world selection from the live Journey slider. The dedicated-server value 3 selects Journey for world creation or selection; the in-game slider ranges from 0.5× to 3× and can be governed by journeypermission_setdifficulty. Check the loaded world and the relevant permission setting rather than treating these as one setting. Dedicated-server reference Official Journey reference
A player can change a power they were expected not to control
Check the permission key for that exact power and its value. The documented values are 0 for locked, 1 for host-only changes, and 2 for everyone. Do not assume that locking one power also locks related controls; the server uses individual journeypermission_* settings. Dedicated-server reference
The group disagrees about what the server permits
Compare the actual per-power settings with the written policy. If players expected a challenge but can freely duplicate researched items or alter world conditions, the server’s rules and its configuration are not aligned. Decide the intended approach, update the relevant settings, and communicate the change before play resumes.
Freezing infection does not restore the world
That is not what the documented control does. It prevents further Corruption, Crimson, and Hallow spread; it does not undo existing spread or the initial Hardmode diagonal stripes. Treat it as a way to stop additional spread, not reverse it. Official Journey reference
Quick Recap
Quick pre-invitation checklist
- The server is loading the intended Journey world and uses the Journey world value, 3, where applicable.
- Every player knows to join with a Journey character.
- The ordinary server options, including world path, port, password policy, and MOTD, are set for the host’s needs.
- Each Journey permission key is configured to match the group’s intended access: locked, host-only, or everyone.
- The group has agreed on research, duplication, difficulty, spawn-rate, environmental, infection, and personal-power rules where relevant.
- The host and a regular player have checked the powers available to each role.
