TeraCopy is worth installing early if you regularly move large batches of files, want more control when a transfer hits trouble, or need to check copied data with checksums. Its strongest case is not a proven speed advantage over Windows: Code Sector documents useful transfer and verification features, but its product information does not establish that TeraCopy is faster on every PC or storage device.
1. It can fit into the usual Windows copy workflow
TeraCopy is a Windows utility for copying and moving files. Code Sector offers optional integration with File Explorer, so people who want a separate transfer tool can use it alongside familiar file-management habits rather than treating it as a wholly separate workflow. Explorer integration is listed for both the free edition and Pro/Business.

The practical reason to install it is convenience: if you often transfer files, you can have its controls available when you need them. If you rarely copy anything beyond a few everyday files, Windows’ built-in workflow may already be enough. Code Sector describes TeraCopy’s capabilities; there is no controlled head-to-head test here showing a universal speed improvement.
2. A problem file does not have to end the whole transfer
Code Sector says TeraCopy can skip a problematic file without terminating the entire transfer, then retry failed or skipped files afterward. It also describes handling network or device reconnection and a mode intended to avoid interruptions from file-name conflicts during unattended transfers.

That can make a long or unattended copy easier to manage: instead of treating one troublesome file as a reason to abandon the whole job, you can let the transfer proceed and deal with exceptions afterward. These are vendor-described behaviors, not a guarantee that every error can be recovered or that a transfer will complete successfully in every situation.
3. You can check copied files with checksums
TeraCopy can compare destination files with source files and can generate or validate checksum files, according to Code Sector. Its product page lists support for 17 checksum algorithms, including CRC32, MD5, SHA1, BLAKE3 and xxHash3; the page was checked on 7 October 2026.

For an ordinary transfer, checksums may be more assurance than you need. They are useful when you want to check that file data matches a checksum, such as after moving a collection you care about. Code Sector’s help guide says the Test function reads files from disk and generates checksums; you can save a checksum file or test a file against a checksum in the clipboard. If “Store/Verify Checksum in ADS” is enabled, TeraCopy stores a checksum and file timestamps in Alternate Data Streams for later checks.

4. Queues, logs and transfer details give you more control
Code Sector also lists transfer queues, a file list that doubles as a log, and progress details such as speed and remaining time. You can select metadata to preserve, including timestamps and permissions. The vendor further describes copying locked files with an elevated Windows service and Volume Shadow Copy.
These features matter most when a transfer has many files, needs monitoring, or involves files that are in use. They are documented capabilities, not independent performance testing. If your needs are more specific, TeraCopy’s command-line help documents Copy, Move, Test and AddList operations; SendTo is available in version 4.0 and later. It also describes switches for skipping or overwriting existing files, overwriting older files, renaming conflicts and choosing whether the application closes after a task. Which edition makes sense?
Code Sector’s feature matrix lists verification after copying, timestamp preservation, copying locked files, Explorer integration, scripts on completion, checksum-file generation and verification, and secure deletion in both TeraCopy and TeraCopy Pro/Business. It lists commercial use, copying to multiple destinations, more than two copy threads, editable file lists, favorite folders, and HTML/CSV report exports under Pro/Business.

When you may not need TeraCopy
If you copy files only occasionally and have no need for retries, checksum checks, queues or detailed transfer logs, the built-in Windows workflow may be sufficient. The case for adding TeraCopy is stronger when one of its specific controls solves a recurring problem—not because every new PC requires a third-party copy utility.
