Christa Pike survived Tennessee’s September 30, 2026, lethal-injection attempt. In an October 2 Associated Press report, her attorneys said in a court filing that she was unconscious and on a ventilator at a Nashville-area hospital. That is the latest condition information established by the sources available here; no direct statement from the hospital is included.
What happened during the execution attempt?
Tennessee attempted to execute Pike by lethal injection at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution on September 30. The attempt did not end in her death, and the Tennessee Department of Correction confirmed that she had been transported to an off-site medical facility.

According to the Associated Press, Pike’s attorneys said they believed problems with the IV lines caused pentobarbital to enter her body rather than her bloodstream, and that a second dose was then administered. That is the lawyers’ account, not a publicly established medical finding. The department had not explained the failure in AP’s October 2 report.

What is known about Pike’s condition?
In the October 2 AP report, her attorneys said a court filing described Pike as unconscious and on a ventilator at a Nashville-area hospital. They said hospital staff were working to save her life and that, as of late Thursday, clear the two doses of pentobarbital. These medical details are attributed to the attorneys’ filing; the sources reviewed do not include an independent update from the hospital, so they do not establish her condition after that report.
What has Tennessee said, and what action followed?
In a September 30 media advisory, the Tennessee Department of Correction said: “The Tennessee Department of Correction followed every step of the State’s lawful, established execution protocol approved by the Attorney General’s Office.” The department also confirmed Pike’s transfer to an off-site medical facility, but the advisory did not explain what went wrong. The statement is the department’s position, not an independently verified finding about what happened during the attempt.

AP reported that Governor Bill Lee ordered an independent review and indefinitely postponed Pike’s execution and another execution scheduled for 2026. Pike’s attorneys also asked a state court to preserve evidence from the attempt. The available reports establish those immediate steps, but not the review’s findings or a later execution schedule.

What was the legal context before the attempt?
Before September 30, Pike challenged Tennessee’s lethal-injection protocol. The Death Penalty Information Center reported that a multi-day evidentiary hearing began August 11 and that the court ultimately upheld the protocol. That ruling does not mean the court accepted every argument made by either side about Pike’s individual circumstances.

In that litigation, Pike’s lawyers raised arguments about her medical and psychological circumstances and alternative execution methods. The state argued that the evidence did not show serious injury or suffering. Those were contested positions by the parties; they should not be treated as findings about the September 30 attempt.
A separate August 2026 petition to the U.S. Supreme Court concerning Tony Von Carruthers describes alleged IV-placement and execution-team problems during his May 21 execution attempt. That filing is advocacy in another person’s case, not a court finding and not evidence establishing what happened to Pike.
