Depending on how it is designed, it can serve as an evaluated-data reference, a guide to isotopes, an interactive learning tool, a specialist resource, or a public display. Here are ten useful ways to encounter the periodic table, drawn from resources documented by NIST, the American Chemical Society, IUPAC, the Royal Society of Chemistry, and a 2019 report on a large installation at the University of Murcia.
This is a curated set of examples, not a reconstruction of the ten items in Emma Stoye’s 2019 Chemistry World feature with the same title: its full text was not available, so the examples below are attributed to the sources that document them.

Why there is more than one periodic table
The familiar element grid is a compact way to organize chemical elements, but a table’s design also signals what information matters to its intended reader. A classroom chart may prioritize quick identification; a data reference may emphasize carefully evaluated atomic properties; an isotope table makes distinctions within an element visible. Interactive versions can reveal classifications, trends, or historical context that a static chart cannot show at a glance.
NIST’s Ben P. Stein describes the subject’s reach beyond chemistry: “It’s also about mathematics and engineering and even nonscientific areas of knowledge including history, geography and the origins of words.” NIST, “The Periodic Table: It’s More than Just Chemistry and Physics,” 28 May 2019.

Ten useful periodic-table resources and forms
1. NIST’s critically evaluated atomic-property table
For readers who need a dependable reference rather than a decorative chart, NIST describes its table as containing its latest critically evaluated data for atomic properties. The page identifies it as NIST Special Publication 966, last updated in June 2024, and offers PDFs. NIST says the PDF is suitable for high-resolution color printing as a desk or wall chart. See NIST’s periodic table of the elements.
The point of an evaluated-data table is not simply to list numbers: values are assessed against experimental and theoretical data. NIST quotes mathematician Jim Sims explaining the work: “As the ‘standards’ people, we are the ones who collect the world’s experimental and theoretical data on atomic properties of the elements and critically evaluate it to come up with the best estimate of the numbers in the table at any time.”
2. The NIST table as a printable desk or wall reference
The same NIST resource can work as a physical lookup chart. Its PDF option makes it suitable for readers who want to consult element data away from a screen or put a reference in a classroom or workspace. It is a practical use of a table whose underlying emphasis is evaluated atomic properties, rather than a separate claim that every printed chart carries the same data.

3. A safety-focused table from the ACS community
The American Chemical Society’s gallery of unique periodic-table versions includes a Periodic Table of the Elements of Safety from its Division of Chemical Health & Safety. Its inclusion shows how the familiar element framework can be used to foreground safety for chemistry learners and practitioners, rather than only symbol recognition or atomic data. Explore the ACS gallery of unique periodic tables.
4. A table highlighting chemists with disabilities
The ACS gallery also links to a table about elements discovered by chemists with disabilities, associated with the society’s Committee on Chemists with Disabilities. It puts people and the history of scientific work alongside the conventional element arrangement, offering a different teaching entry point from a standard reference grid.
5. An interactive Spanish-language table
Among the ACS gallery’s examples is an interactive Spanish-language periodic table from a University of Puerto Rico student chapter. Its significance is both practical and educational: an interactive format and Spanish-language presentation can make element exploration more accessible to audiences who may not find a conventional English wall chart the best starting point.

6. IUPAC’s Periodic Table of the Elements and Isotopes
The International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry’s educational IPTEI resource uses the familiar chemical-element table as a model, but directs attention to isotopes: forms of the same element that differ in nuclear composition. IUPAC says it was created to familiarize students, teachers, and non-specialists with the existence and importance of isotopes. Read about IUPAC’s Periodic Table of the Elements and Isotopes.

The accompanying element-by-element review includes charts for stable and radioactive isotopes. That makes the resource useful when the question is not only “Which element is this?” but also “What isotope information is associated with it?” The associated scholarly article appeared in Pure and Applied Chemistry, volume 90, issue 12, pages 1833–2092 (2018).
7. The Royal Society of Chemistry’s interactive table
The Royal Society of Chemistry’s interactive periodic table offers more than static boxes: its interface includes views by classification, group, block, period, state, and properties, as well as detailed element pages. It also brings in history, alchemy, podcasts, videos, and trends. Open the RSC interactive periodic table.

- COMPREHENSIVE SET: Package includes 2 educational chemistry posters featuring the periodic table of elements and essential chemistry reference information
- EDUCATIONAL VALUE: Perfect visual aid for high school and college students, featuring clear and detailed chemistry equations and reference charts
- CLASSROOM READY: Ideal for science classrooms, study rooms, or dorm rooms to provide quick access to important chemistry concepts
- REFERENCE MATERIAL: Functions as a helpful cheat sheet for chemistry formulas, equations, and periodic table information all in one convenient display
- VISUAL LEARNING: Clear and organized layout makes complex chemistry concepts easier to understand and remember
That range makes the RSC table suited to exploratory learning. A reader can begin with an element, compare a category, or follow a trend instead of having to infer every relationship from a single fixed layout.
8. Historical and alchemical perspectives
History and alchemy are explicitly part of the RSC interactive resource. These views connect the modern table to earlier attempts to classify substances and understand matter. They are useful when teaching how scientific ideas develop, rather than presenting today’s arrangement as if it appeared fully formed.
9. An ACS-curated route to other table projects
The ACS gallery functions as a discovery point for more than its own society’s projects. It links to resources from IUPAC, PubChem, the Royal Society of Chemistry, Science, and Tableau, alongside the specialist and community examples above. The gallery is useful when a reader wants to browse different approaches; the linked projects should be treated as distinct resources with their own purposes, not as one standardized table.

10. A monumental installation at the University of Murcia
A 2019 Chemistry World search-result excerpt described a permanent periodic-table installation on the chemistry faculty building at the University of Murcia. It reported 118 metal squares, each 75 × 75 cm, covering 150 m² overall, and said the installation was “thought to be the biggest permanent one in existence.” That is a dated, qualified report—not confirmation of a current world record.
