Telegram does not publish a statistic showing what share of store bots fail as they grow. But its documentation describes several predictable pressure points: broadcast rate limits, webhook updates that may repeat or arrive out of order, seller-operated backend infrastructure, and different payment rules for digital and physical goods. Fixing those points means pacing sends, making order processing safe to retry, and building checkout and support around the type of product you sell.
Why do Telegram store bots break at scale?
A Telegram bot is connected to a server operated by its owner; that server processes incoming user input and makes requests to Telegram. As a store gets busier, delays or failures in that application can affect orders even when Telegram itself is working normally. Separately, a campaign that sends too many messages too quickly can hit Telegram’s documented limits.

Telegram’s official material establishes these mechanisms, not a measured failure rate for store bots. The practical lesson is to treat volume, retries, checkout, and fulfillment as operational concerns—not assume that adding more users is only a messaging problem.

Telegram’s Bots FAQ, accessed October 5, 2026, says bulk notifications are limited to about 30 messages per second by default and warns that exceeding the limit can result in 429 errors. It also documents a limit of 20 messages per minute in a group and advises avoiding more than one message per second in a single chat. Check the current Telegram Bots FAQ before setting a production sending rate, since platform limits and eligibility can change.

A bursty campaign is different from steady traffic: if a bot tries to send a large list immediately, it can hit the bulk limit even if ordinary order messages are low-volume. Put outbound messages in a queue, pace dispatch, and handle 429 responses using Telegram’s retry guidance rather than repeatedly resending at full speed. If a campaign is not eligible for paid broadcasts, Telegram suggests spreading it over a longer window, such as 8–12 hours.
Choose paced delivery or paid broadcasts
| Approach | When it fits | Limits and trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Paced free delivery | Campaigns that can tolerate a longer delivery window. | Telegram documents about 30 bulk messages per second by default. A longer queue reduces burst pressure but means some recipients wait; Telegram suggests an 8–12-hour spread for campaigns that do not qualify for paid broadcasts. |
| Paid broadcasts | Eligible bots with a genuinely time-sensitive, high-volume campaign. | Telegram documents throughput up to 1,000 messages per second. Its FAQ lists eligibility thresholds of at least 100,000 Stars in the bot balance and 100,000 monthly active users; the Developer Terms state that each successfully broadcast message above 30 per second costs 0.1 Stars. These thresholds and terms are subject to change. See the FAQ and Bot Platform Developer Terms. |
Paid throughput is an option for qualifying senders, not a general fix for a slow backend or a reason to skip queueing. Decide based on campaign urgency, eligibility, cost, and whether recipients need an immediate notification.

How should a store handle webhook retries and duplicate updates?
Telegram’s Bot API supports a configured webhook secret_token, delivered in the X-Telegram-Bot-Api-Secret-Token header, so an application can verify that a webhook request carries the expected secret. The API’s update_id can help identify repeated updates and restore order when updates arrive out of sequence. See Telegram’s Bot API documentation for the current fields and behavior.
These features help an application recognize requests; they do not make order fulfillment exactly-once. A robust handler should record update identifiers and make consequential actions safe to repeat. For example, receiving the same payment-related update twice should not create two orders, decrement inventory twice, acknowledge payment twice, or deliver the same digital item twice.

A defensive processing sequence
- Verify the webhook secret. Compare the incoming secret-token header with the secret configured for the webhook before accepting the request.
- Record the update identifier. Persist the identifier with processing state so a repeated update can be recognized rather than treated as a new purchase.
- Apply order changes idempotently. Tie payment acknowledgment, inventory changes, and fulfillment to a stable order or payment record, and make repeat attempts return the existing result instead of duplicating side effects.
- Track incomplete work. Keep enough state to distinguish received, paid, fulfilled, and failed orders, so an interrupted process can be investigated and safely resumed.
Idempotent order handling and durable state are engineering recommendations based on the documented possibility of repeats and out-of-order updates; Telegram does not prescribe a particular database, framework, or deployment design.
Which payment rules apply to a Telegram store?
Classify the product before implementing checkout. Telegram’s rules differ for digital goods and services sold inside Telegram apps versus physical goods, and applying the wrong payment flow can make checkout noncompliant.
Rank #4
| What you sell | Payment path | Seller obligations |
|---|---|---|
| Digital goods or services sold inside Telegram apps | Telegram requires payment in Telegram Stars (XTR); third-party currencies or payment providers cannot be used for these in-app sales. |
Provide customer support for payment issues, respond to disputes, deliver what was advertised in a timely manner, support /paysupport, and be able to issue refunds through the Bot API. |
| Physical goods | Telegram says Mini Apps may integrate third-party payment providers for physical goods. | Fulfill the physical order and account for the chosen provider’s requirements. Do not apply the digital-goods Stars rule to physical items. |
For digital goods, Telegram’s Bot Platform Developer Terms §6.2.1 state: “As the purveyor, it is your duty to ensure that the digital products and services in your TPA are delivered as advertised and in a timely manner, as agreed between you and the purchasers.” The Bot Payments API documentation for digital goods and services explains Stars, support, and refunds; the developer introduction discusses bots and Mini Apps.

What should the bot owner monitor as order volume grows?
Because the owner’s server processes bot inputs and API requests, backend availability and capacity remain the operator’s responsibility. Telegram’s documentation does not mandate a hosting provider, database, uptime target, or horizontal-scaling design. Choose those based on the bot’s actual workload rather than assuming a specific infrastructure pattern is required.
- Queue depth and message-send errors: a growing queue or repeated 429 responses can reveal that dispatch is outpacing the applicable limit.
- Webhook processing time and failures: slow or failing handlers can delay order state changes and fulfillment.
- Order-state mismatches: compare paid, fulfilled, and refunded records so interrupted processing or duplicate side effects are visible.
- Recovery readiness: maintain backups and a tested recovery procedure for the application’s order records, and document how to resume incomplete work without duplicating fulfillment.
These are general reliability practices, not Telegram-specific requirements. They address the operator-controlled parts of the system that platform rate limits and Bot API features cannot manage for the store.
