Two youths, aged 14 and 15, did not deny charges connected to a crash that critically injured a police officer near Palmerston North. At a 2 October 2026 appearance in Palmerston North Youth Court, the 15-year-old did not deny two amended charges after three of his original charges were withdrawn; the younger youth did not deny one remaining charge. Both were referred to Family Group Conferences and remained on bail, according to the New Zealand Herald’s report.
What happened in the crash
Early on 22 August 2026, an officer deployed road spikes on Kairanga Bunnythorpe Road near Palmerston North in an attempt to stop a fleeing vehicle. The vehicle crashed into a police car behind which the officer was standing with a colleague. The impact threw the officer into another vehicle and critically injured him. A second officer was treated for minor injuries. The New Zealand Herald reported that the critically injured officer was airlifted to Wellington Hospital.
What the youths did not deny
The two youths appeared again in Palmerston North Youth Court on 2 October 2026. The charges and outcomes reported at that appearance were different for each youth:

These are the outcomes reported from the 2 October appearance, not a report that either youth was convicted or sentenced.

What “did not deny” means in Youth Court
In this report, “did not deny” is the Youth Court wording for accepting responsibility for an offence. NZME said the Youth Court of New Zealand explains that a young person who does not deny a charge has accepted responsibility. The wording should not be recast as a guilty plea: the reporting does not establish that legal characterization for this case.
A young person who does not deny an offence may be referred to a Family Group Conference as part of the Youth Court process. District Courts material describes that referral and the conference’s place in the process. Oranga Tamariki publishes guidance on conference timeframes, but the case report does not say when these conferences will take place or what outcomes they will reach.

Bail conditions and next court dates
Both youths were directed to Family Group Conferences and were on bail at the time of the 2 October report. The report listed curfews and a condition not to contact the other defendant. For the younger youth, it also reported a condition not to use social media. The older youth was subject to a 24-hour curfew, with stated exceptions for approved supervision or educational courses. These are conditions as reported on 2 October, not confirmation of any later changes.
- The 14-year-old was granted bail until 13 November 2026.
- The 15-year-old was remanded on bail to appear again on 11 December 2026.
How the officer was recovering
Central district commander Superintendent Dion Bennett told NZME the officer’s condition had “substantially improved.” Bennett said: “His general health is good and his injuries are healing. He’s walking, albeit a little unsteady, and he’s talking.”

Bennett also said the indications were that the officer would need another three to six months to recover. That was an estimate in the 2 October report, not a confirmed recovery timeline. The officer’s message, relayed by Bennett, was: “It’s alright, I’m good, I’m safe. Thank you”.
