The report links the technology gains to the AI boom and rising tech stocks—but the $845 billion is a tally for technology billionaires broadly, not an AI-only total.
What the $845 billion figure measures
Bloomberg’s Billionaires Index estimates the net worth of the 500 richest people. Its October 5, 2026 report says roughly 100 technology fortunes gained $845 billion combined during the first nine months of the year, the largest gain for that period in the index’s history. The figures are estimates of changes in wealth, not salaries, realized investment proceeds or money deposited into bank accounts. Bloomberg report syndicated by Yahoo Finance

The headline’s “AI billionaires” label is shorthand. Bloomberg’s reported category is technology fortunes; the reporting says AI-related investment and rising technology stocks fueled the gains, but it does not establish that AI alone caused every increase or that all the wealth belonged to AI founders. The Economic Times’ reproduction of the report also describes the group as technology billionaires.

Technology fortunes rose as others fell
Over the same January-to-September 2026 period, fortunes outside technology lost a combined $62 billion, according to Bloomberg’s index figures. That contrast shows how concentrated the year’s gains were among the technology group represented on the list.
#1 Best Overall
Technology billionaires made up about one-fifth of the index’s members but held $4.6 trillion in combined wealth—36% of the wealth represented in the index—according to the October 5 report. Bloomberg also attributed 94% of the index’s net gains to Americans. These are shares of the index’s membership, wealth and reported net gains, respectively, not measures of all billionaires worldwide. Bloomberg report syndicated by Yahoo Finance
Why “AI drove it” needs qualification
The report connects the technology group’s gains with enthusiasm around AI and rising technology stocks. That is an attributed explanation for a market-driven increase, not a clean accounting of wealth created by AI businesses. Public share prices affect estimates for stakes in listed companies, while private-company valuations can also change; the reported total does not isolate an AI effect from other forces affecting technology valuations.
One individual example in the reporting is Elon Musk, whose estimated fortune rose by $310 billion through September, according to Bloomberg’s index figures. A separate Yahoo Finance account characterized that amount as roughly 40% of the index’s entire increase; that share is the secondary account’s characterization, not a separate AI-specific calculation. The gains can change with markets
The wealth figures are a snapshot, not a guaranteed or permanent result. The same reporting says the combined wealth of the 500 people in the index fell from $13.4 trillion at its mid-June peak to $12.6 trillion later, a 6% decline as markets cooled. That pullback illustrates how quickly estimated net worth can move when asset values change. Yahoo Finance account
