If a Teams conversation has vanished, first check whether it is merely hidden: search for the person and use More options > Unhide if Teams marks the chat as hidden. If you chose Remove chat history for a one-on-one chat, Microsoft says you can no longer access that history, including through search. For work or school accounts, an administrator can check retention rules and whether a compliance copy remains available, but that does not necessarily put messages back in your Teams chat.
Identify what disappeared before trying to restore it
“Missing chat history” can mean several different things. The recovery option depends on whether the chat is hidden, its history was removed, a policy or administrator deleted messages, or a channel or team was deleted or archived.

| What you see | What may have happened | Who can act |
|---|---|---|
| A one-on-one chat is absent from the list | It may be hidden rather than deleted. | You can search for the person and unhide the chat. Microsoft Support: hide, remove, or leave a chat. |
| You removed a one-on-one chat history | The history was removed from your access; the other participant can still see the conversation. | You cannot access your removed history again, including through search, according to Microsoft Support. |
| Older messages are gone or a retention notice appears | An organization retention policy may have deleted messages. | Your IT or compliance administrator can explain the policy and check for retained compliance records. Messages deleted by a retention policy cannot be recovered in Teams. Microsoft Support: retention-policy messages. |
| A message says an administrator deleted it | An administrator removed the message. | Ask the administrator for context and whether a compliance copy is retained. Microsoft Support: messages deleted by admins. |
| A channel or team is missing | The channel may have been deleted, or the team archived. | A team owner can restore a deleted channel within 21 days, or restore an archived team. Microsoft Support: delete a channel and archive or restore a team. |
Try these checks in order
- Confirm the account. Check that you are signed in to the right personal account or work/school account and, for work, the intended organization. Different account contexts can affect which chats and features you see. See Microsoft’s explanation of chat features in Teams for personal use.
- Search for the conversation. Search for the person’s name or a distinctive term from the chat. If a one-on-one result is marked hidden, open More options and choose Unhide. Microsoft’s chat guidance also explains how hidden history is shown again.
- Check whether you left a group or meeting chat. Ask a participant whether they can add you back. Leaving a chat and removing its history are different actions; other participants may still have the conversation.
- Look for a deletion or retention notice. If you see one, contact your organization’s IT or compliance administrator. Give them the approximate date, participants, and chat or channel name so they can check which policy applies and whether records are retained.
- For a missing channel or team, ask an owner to check its status. Deleted channels have a 21-day restoration window. Archived teams remain read-only and searchable, and an owner can restore them.
What you can restore in Teams
Hidden one-on-one chats
A hidden chat can be found and unhidden. Search for the person, open the hidden result’s More options menu, and choose Unhide. This restores the conversation’s visibility; it is not the same as recovering deleted messages.

For a one-on-one conversation, Microsoft says that using Remove chat history affects your access: the other person can still see the chat, but you cannot access it again, even through search. If the conversation was a group or meeting chat and you left it, ask a current participant whether they can re-add you.

Deleted channels and archived teams
A team owner can restore a deleted channel within 21 days of deletion. The owner should check the team’s deleted channels and restore it before that window expires; see Microsoft’s channel instructions. An archived team is different: it stays read-only and searchable, and its owner can restore it from Archived Teams. See Microsoft’s team archive instructions.
Work or school accounts: ask about retention and eDiscovery
Organizations set their own Teams retention policies, so the time messages remain available can vary. If a policy deletes a message, Microsoft says it cannot be recovered in Teams. Ask your administrator whether the affected user, chat or channel, and message date are covered by a policy; Microsoft’s retention-policy guidance describes the notices users may encounter.

Teams keeps user-accessible data and compliance data separately. If a policy or hold preserves a compliance copy, an authorized administrator may be able to find it through eDiscovery. That is a compliance search, not a control that restores the message to your Teams chat. Availability depends on the organization’s policies, licensing, permissions, and holds. See Microsoft Learn’s Teams eDiscovery guidance and Teams retention policy documentation.
If Teams displays a notice that an administrator deleted a message, contact that administrator for the reason and to ask whether any compliance record is retained. Microsoft describes these notices in its admin-deletion support article. Do not assume that an administrator can restore a message into your chat view.

Teams for personal use works differently
In Teams for personal use, deleting a chat removes it from your devices and makes it unsearchable. Microsoft notes that if someone re-adds you to an ongoing group or meeting chat you deleted, the full history becomes visible again. An export can provide a downloaded copy of personal chat data, but it does not restore a deleted conversation inside Teams. See Microsoft’s pages on deleting a personal chat and exporting or deleting personal data.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why clearing the cache is not the right first fix
Microsoft advises that clearing the Teams client cache does not fix missing messages or chat history that will not load. It also removes diagnostic logs that may help identify the cause. Check the account, search for a hidden conversation, and investigate policy or deletion notices first. See Microsoft Learn’s cache-clearing guidance.
