The NXTPAPER 14 gives you more screen area, while the iPad Air is substantially lighter. Neither is a universal winner, and the available specifications do not establish which is easier on the eyes or better for handwriting.
This comparison uses Apple’s current M4 iPad Air in its 11-inch and 13-inch sizes. If you are considering an older iPad Air, check its display and Pencil compatibility separately.

How the displays differ for reading
TCL’s NXTPAPER 14 has a 14.3-inch 2.4K NXTPAPER 3.0 display, which the company positions as a matte, reading-oriented screen with selectable viewing modes. Apple’s M4 iPad Air uses a conventional IPS Liquid Retina display: 11 inches at 2360 × 1640 resolution or 13 inches at 2732 × 2048, both listed at 264 pixels per inch. Both iPad Air sizes have True Tone and an antireflective coating.
The trade-off is display approach and workspace: TCL offers a larger matte panel, while Apple offers a smaller conventional tablet display with stated brightness of 500 nits on the 11-inch model and 600 nits on the 13-inch model. Those specifications do not prove one screen is more comfortable for every reader. TCL’s claims about reduced glare, eye comfort and a paper-like experience describe the design intent; they are not evidence that the tablet prevents eye strain or improves eye health.

TCL describes the 14.3-inch display as “designed to deliver deeper immersion for streaming, reading and playing.” That is manufacturer copy, not an independent assessment. See TCL’s NXTPAPER 14 specifications and Apple’s iPad Air technical specifications.
Portability: more screen or less weight?
The NXTPAPER 14 weighs 760 g according to TCL. Apple lists the Wi-Fi iPad Air M4 at 464 g for the 11-inch model and 616 g for the 13-inch model. The iPad Air is the lighter choice, especially at 11 inches; the TCL provides the largest screen of the three configurations.
| Model | Display | Listed weight |
|---|---|---|
| TCL NXTPAPER 14 | 14.3-inch, 2.4K | 760 g (TCL specification) |
| iPad Air M4, 11-inch Wi-Fi | 11-inch, 2360 × 1640, 264 ppi | 464 g (Apple specification) |
| iPad Air M4, 13-inch Wi-Fi | 13-inch, 2732 × 2048, 264 ppi | 616 g (Apple specification) |
For long reading sessions at a desk, the NXTPAPER’s larger panel may be appealing. For carrying a tablet or holding it for extended periods, the lower listed weight of the iPad Air—particularly the 11-inch version—is a practical advantage.

Handwritten notes and stylus support
TCL identifies a T-Pen for writing and drawing, but says accessories are optional and availability varies by country. Confirm the exact NXTPAPER 14 model, pen compatibility and local bundle contents before buying; do not assume the pen is included.
The M4 iPad Air supports Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil (USB-C). Apple’s listed box contents are the iPad Air, a USB-C charge cable and a 20W USB-C adapter, so budget for a Pencil separately. The specifications establish supported styluses, but they do not provide a head-to-head measurement of handwriting latency or prove which tablet feels better to write on.
If note-taking is central, first check that your preferred apps are available and work the way you need on Android or iPadOS. The available product specifications do not compare particular note-taking apps, so they cannot establish an app winner.
Battery figures do not settle runtime
TCL lists a 10,000 mAh battery and 33W PD fast charging for the NXTPAPER 14. Apple lists battery capacities of 28.93 Wh for the 11-inch iPad Air M4 and 36.59 Wh for the 13-inch model. These figures use different units and do not show how long the tablets last under comparable use. They are not a sound basis for declaring a battery-life winner.
Software, accessories and local buying checks
The NXTPAPER 14 is an Android tablet with Google services, while the iPad Air runs iPadOS. Choose based on the apps and services you actually use, and on whether you want to stay within an existing Android or Apple setup. The available specifications do not establish a performance, app-quality or note-taking-app winner.
TCL lists a protective case, T-Pen, stand and keyboard among optional accessories, and warns that features and specifications can vary by country. Apple’s listed M4 iPad Air box contents do not include a Pencil. Before comparing total value, check the price and exact contents of the NXTPAPER 14 bundle in your market and add the cost of any stylus or case you need. Apple’s specifications page does not provide a direct price comparison, so local prices and availability determine which costs less.
