The TCL 65C8L is a feature-rich 65-inch 4K Mini LED TV on paper, with Google TV, Dolby Vision IQ, HDR10+, four HDMI 2.1 inputs and a manufacturer-claimed peak brightness of up to 5,000 nits. But that figure and its 2,040 local-dimming zones are TCL specifications, not independent test results. Available reviews do not establish comprehensive lab performance for the exact 65C8L variant, so judge it by your local price and verified testing of the specific model sold in your market.
What is the TCL 65C8L?
The 65C8L is the 65-inch version of TCL’s 2026 C8L SQD-Mini LED television line. TCL’s Australia specification sheet lists a 3840 × 2160 resolution, Google TV, HDR10+ and Dolby Vision IQ. Regional product details can differ, however, so check the model suffix and specifications on the retail unit you are considering.

Mini LED is a backlit LCD design: the screen uses a backlight divided into local-dimming zones. It is not an OLED television, where each pixel emits its own light. The 65C8L’s 2,040-zone figure is a manufacturer-listed specification for this size, not a complete measure of contrast or blooming in actual viewing.
What does the available review evidence say?
This is not a hands-on review or a report of independent measurements. What Hi-Fi?’s January 2026 coverage was an early CES hands-on, and the publication said information about the C8L/QM8L range was limited. It did not present a comprehensive production-sample test of the 65C8L. Read What Hi-Fi?’s C8L/QM8L hands-on report.

TechRadar later reported favorable blooming control in its review of the equivalent US QM8L, but explicitly said it had not tested the UK-focused C8L at that time. Treat that as related-series context, not proof of how every regional 65C8L performs. Read TechRadar’s coverage and its testing qualification.
No exact-model independent measurements are established here for HDR brightness patterns, input lag, color accuracy, viewing angles, uniformity, power use or long-term reliability. TCL Germany’s page lists review-score snippets from Computerbild and Chip, but those scores alone do not establish detailed findings about the set’s strengths or weaknesses.
How bright is the 65C8L?
TCL Germany advertises up to 5,000 nits of HDR peak brightness for the 65-inch model. “Up to” is a manufacturer peak claim; it does not establish sustained brightness across the screen, performance in a particular HDR scene or an independent measurement. A bright-peak specification is not enough on its own to predict HDR impact or compare the TV with an OLED or another Mini LED set.

TCL Taiwan also lists 100% BT.2020 typical area coverage, attributing that figure to TCL laboratory testing and noting possible variation of up to 5% due to test conditions, equipment and production batches. This, too, is a company-reported result rather than an independent measurement. See TCL Germany’s 65C8L specifications and TCL Taiwan’s product listing and claim footnotes.
Does the TCL 65C8L support 4K 144 Hz gaming?
TCL’s Australia specification sheet lists 4K/144 Hz VRR and four HDMI 2.1 inputs. That gives the set promising connectivity on paper for compatible gaming PCs and consoles, but the listing is regional; verify the exact unit’s input capabilities and firmware before buying. Your source device, game, settings and HDMI cable also need to support the mode you want. The available information does not establish an independent input-lag result.
TCL Taiwan describes the panel as native 144 Hz and lists VRR up to 288 Hz. These are not interchangeable figures: the Taiwan listing distinguishes its native refresh description from the higher VRR figure. Do not interpret the 288 Hz claim as native 4K panel refresh. TCL Australia also cautions that some features may require software updates. View TCL Australia’s C8L specification sheet.

How does it compare with OLED?
The main technology distinction is local dimming versus per-pixel lighting: the 65C8L is a backlit Mini LED LCD, while OLED pixels are self-emissive. Neither the zone count nor peak-brightness claim settles which is better for your room or content. To compare them meaningfully, look for measurements and viewing tests of dark-scene blooming, black levels, HDR behavior, color accuracy, motion and off-axis viewing for the exact models you are considering.

The available QM8L blooming observation is not a controlled, same-lab comparison with a named OLED and does not directly verify the UK C8L, let alone every regional 65C8L. Choose based on credible direct evidence and the price of the exact local models, rather than assuming a winner from advertised brightness or dimming-zone counts.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is the TCL 65C8L worth buying?
It merits consideration if your priorities include a 65-inch 4K Mini LED screen, a high-refresh gaming feature set and HDR formats such as Dolby Vision IQ and HDR10+. Whether it is a good buy depends on the locally available price and the strength of independent testing for the exact regional variant. Without that evidence, the specifications describe potential, not a verified picture-quality verdict.

Before ordering, compare the current price with similarly sized TVs in your market and check the seller’s warranty, returns, delivery and installation terms. Confirm the model suffix, stand dimensions, available inputs and any firmware-dependent features. The Taiwan store listing showed NT$59,990 and a sold-out/restocking status when accessed in 2026; that is a regional, time-sensitive snapshot, not a current price or stock guarantee elsewhere. Check the Taiwan listing for its local product details.
What mount fits the TCL 65C8L?
TCL Taiwan specifies a 300 × 300 mm VESA mounting pattern. TCL Australia’s regional specification sheet says the wall bracket is not included. Verify the pattern and mounting instructions against your exact retail unit, then select a bracket rated for the TV’s weight and suitable for your wall type; the available information does not establish compatibility with a particular mount.
