In photography, “TC” can mean a teleconverter—an optical accessory that extends a compatible lens’s effective focal length—or time code, a video reference used for synchronization and editing. The context matters: a lens accessory and a camera’s video display indicator are different things.
What does TC mean in photography?
If you see “TC” in a lens or accessory discussion, it usually refers to a teleconverter. If it appears among video recording or display indicators, it may mean time code. The abbreviation alone does not identify a particular camera setting, so the surrounding menu, screen, or product name is important.

What is a teleconverter?
A teleconverter fits between a compatible camera body and lens to increase the lens’s apparent focal length and produce a tighter angle of view. Nikon describes it this way: “A teleconverter allows you to increase the apparent focal length of a lens, giving you a greater telephoto effect than a lens alone.” Photographers may use one to extend reach for distant wildlife or other subjects without carrying a longer super-telephoto lens.

For example, Nikon’s Z TELECONVERTER TC-1.4x increases the reach of compatible lenses by 1.4x. Sony specifies a 2.0x multiplier for its SEL20TC; its example turns a compatible 70–200mm lens into approximately 140–400mm. Canon’s RF1.4x and RF2x extenders provide 1.4x and 2x magnification, respectively.

Can you use a teleconverter with your lens?
Only if the specific teleconverter, lens, and camera system are compatible. A shared brand name or mount is not enough: Nikon cautions that not every NIKKOR lens works with every teleconverter, and Sony limits its SEL20TC to selected telephoto lenses. Sony’s FE 200–600mm specifications, for example, list the SEL14TC and SEL20TC as compatible options. Check the exact lens model against the manufacturer’s compatibility documentation before buying.
- Confirm the teleconverter is made for your camera mount and exact lens model.
- Check the manufacturer’s notes on autofocus, stabilization, and focal-length or aperture restrictions.
- Consider whether the extra reach is worth the light loss, potential image-quality change, additional bulk, and cost for the subjects you photograph.
Compatibility pages and specifications can change, so rely on the camera or lens maker’s current documentation rather than assuming that an older compatibility list still applies.

- The 2X Teleconverter can make the focal length of all the Canon EF lenses increased to 2 times, Built-in 4 groups, 7 pcs optics, and the exposure factor enlarge approx 4. (equals to 2 aperture).
- Compatible for Canon EF Mount Lens.[Notice:It only compatible with fixed focal length L-series lenses 100mm and over, as well as the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L, EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS, EF 70-200mm f/4L, and EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L.]
- Support lens Auto Focus function.Outstanding image quality thanks to new optical design and improved AF performance. The focus speed is really fast and can track the subject, and lock the subject flexibly and accurately.
- Lens coatings are optimized to minimize ghosting and flare. With the aperture adjustment lever on the adapter, you can adjust the aperture fast.
- With an upgraded USB firmware interface, it supports USB firmware upgrading, and through subsequent upgrades, the adapter can improve its function, and fix bugs.
What changes when you add a teleconverter?
The longer effective focal length narrows the angle of view, but the image reaching the camera is dimmer. The amount depends on the particular teleconverter: Nikon and Canon describe one stop of light loss for a 1.4x example and two stops for a 2x example; Nikon’s 1.7x example loses 1.5 stops. Sony reports approximately two stops for the SEL20TC. These are product-specific examples, not a promise that every teleconverter behaves identically.
With less light, you may need a slower shutter speed or higher ISO, depending on the scene and exposure settings. Autofocus and stabilization behavior also depend on the body-and-lens combination. Nikon notes possible sharpness reduction as a tradeoff; results are not established as identical across camera systems, lenses, or shooting conditions.

- Compatible with select Nikon NIKKOR Z long telephoto lenses.
- Increases the native reach of compatible lenses by 40%—without any loss of resolution and with outstanding image quality.
- Retains all AF functionality and speed, VR capabilities and minimum focusing distance, with only 1 stop of light loss.
- Can use every focus point of your Z series camera's sensor all the way down to f/11, unprecedented for teleconverters.
- Maintains the close focusing capability of NIKKOR Z lenses while enlarging the reproduction ratio by 1.4x. Durable and dust and drip resistant.
When is a teleconverter useful—and what are the alternatives?
A compatible teleconverter can be useful for wildlife, sports, aircraft, and other distant subjects when carrying a longer lens is undesirable. It is not a way to turn any short or incompatible lens into a universal telephoto lens.
The alternatives have different compromises. Cropping avoids adding an optical accessory but leaves fewer pixels in the final framing. A longer lens may provide reach without a teleconverter but can add cost and bulk. Moving closer may work when the setting and subject allow it, but some subjects or locations impose working-distance limits. There is no universal image-quality winner: the outcome depends on the camera, lens, light, subject distance, and intended output.

- 2x telephoto lens converter: For smartphones with a built in 5x telephoto camera, this converter doubles optical zoom from 5x (120 mm equivalent) to 10x (240 mm equivalent) for distant shooting without digital cropping or image loss
- For 5X telephoto cameras only: Not for main camera; cell phone accessories compatible with Vivo X200 Ultra Xiaomi 15 Ultra Samsung Galaxy S26 S25 Ultra Android iPhone 18 Pro Max 18 Pro 17 16 Pro/Pro Max; select 5X before use if optical zoom is below 5X
- Compact and lightweight: Compared to standard external zoom lenses, this 2x converter is shorter and lighter; it features a 17mm thread for 17mm threaded phone cages, cases, and lens clips; content creator essential photography and filming accessories
- Multicoated optical glass: 7 elements in 5 groups of HD optical glass and multiple nanocoatings reduce glare and distortion, resist water, fingerprints, and scratches, and ensure excellent light transmission; a cleaning cloth is included
- Important note: Different phone brands may require different zoom levels to activate the telephoto lens; compatible with iPhone, apply the included stickers to cover the wide angle lens to prevent lens switching caused by light sensor interference
What does TC mean on a camera display?
During video recording, TC can mean time code: a time reference associated with video that helps with precise editing and synchronization. It is not a teleconverter or an exposure control. Nikon defines time code as a time reference added to video, and Fujifilm’s X-T30 II documentation identifies a time-code display indicator. The exact behavior depends on the camera model and recording mode; consult that model’s manual if you need to interpret a particular display.
Do not confuse TC with color temperature. Fujifilm documents color temperature as a white-balance setting measured in Kelvin; lower-temperature light appears more yellow or red, while higher-temperature light appears bluer. The available documentation does not establish “TC” as a standard abbreviation for color temperature.
