Tavus’s Conversational Video Interface (CVI) is a developer platform for building AI agents that interact with people in live, face-to-face video conversations. It is different from Tavus’s earlier script-to-video product: CVI coordinates a rendered digital persona with audio and visual perception and conversational turn-taking. Tavus describes the system and its performance; the published figures below are company claims, not independent validation.
What Tavus’s live video AI does
CVI is Tavus’s developer-facing layer for building what the company calls personal AI counterparts, or PALs. Rather than generating a finished talking-head clip from a script, it is designed to support an ongoing conversation: the agent can present a face, take in conversational signals, and respond while managing when to speak. Tavus’s CVI product page describes the platform and its current components.

The distinction matters if you are evaluating Tavus for an application. A scripted video generator produces a media asset; a conversational interface is infrastructure for an interactive experience. A team still needs to decide how to connect the agent to its own application, content, and conversation logic.
How the live experience is assembled
Tavus presents CVI as a set of coordinated models rather than a single avatar feature. The current labels on its product materials are Phoenix-4.5, Raven-1, and Sparrow-2. Griffin is marked as a preview. These are Tavus’s product and version descriptions, so check the live product materials when choosing a version.
#1 Best Overall
- 12.3 MP Sony IMX500 Intelligent Vision Sensor with a powerful neural network accelerator
- Integrated low-power inference engine
- Integrated RP2040 for neural network and firmware management
- Pre-loaded with MobileNet machine vision model
- Sensor modes: 4056×3040 at 10fps, 2028×1520 at 30fps
| Component | Role Tavus assigns it | What that means in a conversation |
|---|---|---|
| Phoenix-4.5 | Real-time rendering | Generates the persona’s facial behavior as the agent responds. |
| Raven-1 | Multimodal perception | Interprets incoming signals, including audio and visual context, according to Tavus’s description. |
| Sparrow-2 | Conversational understanding and turn management | Handles conversational timing, interruptions, background speech, and related audio context. |
| Griffin | Preview | Tavus presents Griffin as a preview feature; its status should not be treated as a generally available production capability. |
In practical terms, rendering gives the AI a visible presence, perception supplies context from the interaction, and turn management helps determine when a response should begin or yield. Those jobs work together, but a product label alone does not establish how well the full system performs in a particular app or environment.
How the product evolved
Tavus’s earlier Phoenix announcement, on March 12, 2024, focused on generating replica videos from scripts, with facial movement and expression synchronized to generated speech. On August 15, 2024, the company announced CVI as a way to build real-time conversations with digital twins and other agents. Its announcement described building safe digital twins or stock agents, launching embedded meeting rooms, and recording, transcribing, and sharing conversations. That is historical context; it does not confirm that every feature or integration described then remains unchanged. See the CVI announcement.

The newer framing is therefore not simply “a more realistic video.” It is a shift from producing a clip to providing a conversational interface that developers can embed and connect to an experience of their own.

Tavus publishes performance and comparison claims for its models. They are useful as a starting point for questions to ask, but they should not be treated as guaranteed outcomes: the reviewed company material does not state enough test or study detail to establish that the results generalize across users, devices, networks, or applications.

| Sparrow-1 ranked #1 on TurnBench | A Tavus claim. The reviewed material does not provide enough benchmark detail to independently characterize or compare the result. |
These figures refer to different components and claims; they are not a single end-to-end measure of conversational quality. For an implementation decision, ask Tavus for the relevant methodology and test the experience under the latency, camera, audio, and network conditions your users will actually encounter. No independent performance validation is established by the cited company materials.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do you need a camera to create a Tavus replica?
Not for every creation path. Tavus’s earlier workflow included capturing video to create a replica, but on May 14, 2026, the company announced Image-to-Replica: a replica made from a single image that can be used as a persona in CVI. The image option means a camera is not a universal prerequisite; video capture remains relevant only if you choose that workflow. Details are in the Image-to-Replica announcement.

What to evaluate before building with CVI
CVI is most relevant to developers considering an interactive video agent, not someone who simply needs a pre-rendered talking-head clip. Before committing to a build, assess the parts that affect your product and users:

- Latency and turn-taking: Test response timing, interruptions, and background speech in the environments where people will use the agent. Do not assume a vendor-reported component figure predicts end-to-end performance.
- Persona creation and consent: Choose an appropriate replica path and establish how identity, permission, and disclosure will be handled in your product.
- Embedding and developer effort: Review Tavus’s current API and integration documentation for the components and application work your design requires.
- Operational fit: Verify current pricing, availability, usage limits, data handling, and production terms directly with Tavus. These details are not established by the product pages and announcements cited here.
Tavus’s materials support a description of its intended architecture and positioning, but they are not enough to declare it better than competing systems. A fair comparison would require current competitor documentation and comparable evidence on inputs, latency methodology, replica controls, integration effort, availability, and cost.
