Henna is a different kind of option because it stains skin, but in the United States the FDA has not approved henna for direct skin application, and “black henna” may contain a dangerous hair-dye ingredient. Neither “temporary” nor “natural” guarantees a product is risk-free.
What can I use instead of a real tattoo?
For a design you expect to change soon, a water-transfer decal or sticker tattoo is the closest low-commitment substitute. It places an image on the skin’s surface rather than creating a permanent tattoo. A decal is usually applied by wetting coated paper; some products instead use adhesive backing that may form a partial or complete barrier between dyes and skin.

Henna or mehndi is stain-based: it colors the skin rather than leaving an image on a removable surface. However, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration says henna is approved only as a hair dye, not for direct skin application. It warns that products sold as “black henna” often contain PPD, a hair-dye ingredient that can cause dangerous reactions and is not permitted in cosmetics intended for skin.
Body makeup or paint may suit someone seeking a washable-looking design, but check that the exact product is labeled for the body area you intend to use and follow its directions. No general wear-time or safety claim applies to every product in this category.

How long do temporary tattoos last?
Wear time depends on the specific decal and its directions. The FDA Office of Women’s Health says sticker tattoos last hours to days; its broader fact sheet says decal temporary tattoos may last from a day to a week or more. Treat those as product-dependent ranges, not a promise for a particular design. Check the package for the maker’s wear guidance and removal instructions.
Henna is a stain rather than a surface decal, so it is not interchangeable with a sticker tattoo. The FDA material cited here does not establish a reliable wear-time range for henna or body paint, so avoid assuming either will last a particular number of days.

The decal format also matters. Some designs transfer from removable backing; others have adhesive backing that forms a partial or complete barrier between dyes and skin. That barrier does not guarantee safety: the FDA notes that other ingredients may cause problems, and reactions to decal tattoos have been reported.
Is black henna safe?
Do not treat black henna as a safe or natural tattoo alternative. According to the FDA, products marketed as black henna often contain PPD, a hair-dye ingredient that can cause dangerous reactions and is not permitted in cosmetics intended for skin. The label “henna” does not establish what is in a particular product or make direct skin use FDA-approved.

For U.S. readers, the FDA’s position is explicit: “Henna, a coloring made from a plant, is approved only for use as a hair dye. - Read the ingredient list and follow the product’s directions. FDA labeling rules require retail cosmetics sold to consumers to list ingredients, but that requirement does not apply to professional-use-only products and samples.
- Do not assume adhesive backing makes a decal safe; ingredients other than dyes can still cause problems.
- If you are considering a temporary tattoo on your face, the FDA suggests trying it first on a less conspicuous area. This does not guarantee that a reaction will not occur.
- Avoid products sold as black henna because they may contain PPD.
The FDA’s guidance is specific to the United States. It says it does not typically enforce local tattooing practices; tattooing is generally regulated by state and local officials. Check the rules and health guidance that apply where you live.

Why not get a permanent tattoo and remove it later?
Removal is not a reliable substitute for choosing a reversible design now. The FDA says tattoo removal may be difficult, painful, costly or incomplete, and can leave scars. Some laser removal takes 6–10 treatments, according to the FDA Office of Women’s Health.
