A target wake time is the clock time you intend to get up regularly. It is a schedule goal, not a recommendation for how many hours to sleep: choose a realistic wake time, then plan bedtime to leave enough room for your age-related sleep needs and personal circumstances.
What does “target wake time” mean?
In everyday use, a target wake time is your planned time to get out of bed and start the day. Keeping it consistent can help anchor a regular sleep schedule. The phrase also appears in clinical protocols and sleep-app features, where it may refer to a specific part of a treatment plan or calculation rather than a universal sleep-health standard.

How do you choose a target wake-up time?
Start with the time you realistically need to get up for work, school, caregiving, or other regular commitments. Then work backward to set a bedtime that gives you adequate opportunity for sleep. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advises adults to get enough sleep for their age; for most adults, that means at least seven hours a night.

CDC’s age-specific recommendations are:
- Adults ages 18–60: 7 or more hours per night.
- Adults ages 61–64: 7–9 hours per night.
- Adults ages 65 and older: 7–8 hours per night.
- Children and teens: different recommendations apply by age; see the CDC’s age-specific sleep recommendations.
These ranges are guidance, not a personalized diagnosis or a guarantee that a particular number will suit every individual. A target wake time by itself cannot tell you how much sleep you need. The CDC notes that more than one in three American adults report not getting the recommended amount of sleep, but that population statistic does not determine an individual schedule. See the CDC’s sleep and heart health guidance.
Do not treat an earlier wake-up as automatically healthier. A useful target is one you can maintain while still allowing adequate sleep and meeting your real obligations. A 2011 chapter protocol by Leon Lack and Helen Wright recommends determining a preferred or target sleep period realistically in light of work and social commitments and motivation for change; that is protocol-specific guidance, not a universal consumer rule.

Should you wake up at the same time on weekends?
CDC’s advice is to go to bed and get up at the same time each day, including weekends. The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute likewise advises keeping the same schedule on weeknights and weekends and limiting the difference to about an hour. A large shift can make it harder to maintain a regular routine, so aim for consistency where your circumstances allow.
How can you track a schedule change?
If you are trying a new target, a simple sleep diary can help you see what is actually happening before you adjust your routine. Lack and Wright describe recording bedtimes, estimated time to fall asleep, nighttime awakenings, and final wake time. Note the actual times rather than assuming that getting into bed equals falling asleep.

Gradually advancing wake time appears in Lack and Wright’s discussion of a specific bright-light protocol for sleep-onset insomnia. That treatment procedure should not be taken as general advice to move everyone’s wake time earlier; circadian conditions and light treatment require appropriate context.

Circadian rhythm treatment
The American Academy of Sleep Medicine’s 2015 clinical practice guideline discusses target wake times in interventions for circadian rhythm sleep-wake disorders. One described adolescent intervention advanced light exposure and wake time toward a preset time. The guideline characterizes the evidence as low, and the protocol is not a universal wake-time prescription. See the AASM practice-guideline page.

Athlytic documents a user-set Target Wake Time in its app. Its target-bedtime calculation also factors in a target sleep recommendation, average time awake during the night, and recent sleep consistency. Those details describe Athlytic’s implementation only; they are not a clinical standard. See Athlytic’s explanation of its target-bedtime calculation.
