For a technology team, that makes it a possible way to commemorate exceptional contributions—not evidence of a broad industry trend or a proven way to improve morale or performance.
What a challenge coin can mean at work
A challenge coin is a small physical token commonly associated with group identity, recognition, and commemoration. In a workplace, its meaning comes less from the object itself than from the story attached to it: who received it, what the team accomplished, and why that moment mattered.

A coin can complement a public thank-you, a project retrospective, or a digital record of an achievement. Its advantage is durability as an object; whether that makes an achievement more memorable for a particular team is a judgment to make locally, not an established measured outcome. There is no evidence here that coins improve retention, morale, belonging, or performance.

A September 18, 2026, Fossbytes article proposed challenge coins for technology-team milestones. That framing is an editorial suggestion, not evidence that tech teams are adopting coins at a rising rate. The available evidence does not establish how common workplace coin programs are or whether they affect team outcomes.

So the practical question is not whether every tech team should start a tradition. It is whether a physical token suits a specific achievement and the people being recognized. A coin is most defensible when the event is significant, the recipients will value a keepsake, and the team can explain the recognition consistently.
When a tech team might award a coin
These are possible occasions to consider, not proven common practices. A coin is likely to feel more meaningful when tied to a specific accomplishment than when handed out routinely without a clear reason.
- Incident response: Commemorate an exceptional response to a serious cybersecurity incident, especially when the work involved sustained coordination across roles.
- Open-source milestones: Mark a major release, a long-running project milestone, or a contribution that materially advanced a project.
- Hardware or device support: Recognize a difficult engineering or compatibility achievement, such as bringing an important device-support effort to completion.
- Individual contributions: Acknowledge an exceptional contribution that deserves recognition beyond a routine project update.
Before choosing the object, agree on the achievement and the recipients. If the recognition criteria are unclear or applied inconsistently, a custom design will not fix that problem.

How to make the recognition feel considered
Connect the design to the achievement
Use a project name, date, symbol, or short phrase that will still make sense later. Keep small text and intricate artwork in check: ask the maker whether the proposed details will remain legible at the selected size.
Explain the story when presenting it
Give the coin with a brief account of what the team or recipient did and why it mattered. That context helps distinguish a commemorative object from generic merchandise.
Decide how recipients are treated
Set expectations about who qualifies and whether a coin is intended for individuals, a whole team, or both. Recognition should not suggest that invisible support work mattered less than the most visible contribution.

What can be customized
Design options vary by maker and order. Challenge Coin Company, for example, lists round coins from 40 to 70 mm, a standard thickness of 3–3.5 mm, and custom shapes and sizes. Its listed options also include plating colors and finishes, soft or hard enamel, decorative borders, sculpted 3D detail, laser engraving, and optional features such as bottle openers, pierced details, spinning elements, and epoxy overlay. These are examples from one supplier, not universal specifications. See its customization information.
More features do not necessarily make a better commemorative design. Choose options that make the achievement recognizable and the coin practical to produce; avoid details that become crowded or hard to read.
What to compare before ordering
Ask suppliers for current terms and compare the points that can change cost, design feasibility, and delivery. One supplier’s specifications or policies should not be treated as an industry standard.

Supplier workflows differ. The Coin Locker describes an online custom-design process that provides a production proof and quote; that is the supplier’s stated workflow, not an independently tested experience. Review its design and ordering information and confirm current terms directly.
Smith & Warren says custom coin orders are sold through authorized dealers and distributors, with exceptions it describes for federal agencies and the U.S. military. It also states that minimum quantities start at 250 pieces. This is that supplier’s policy, not a general minimum; verify it and confirm whether the dealer route fits your organization. Challenge coins are associated with military tradition, but their origin is not settled as one definitive story. A U.S. Department of Defense feature describes competing accounts, including a story in which a coin-sized object bearing a unit insignia served as proof of identity. The Defense Department’s account is best read as a description of the tradition and its stories, not proof of a single origin.

Challenge Coin Company identifies what it calls the earliest documented U.S. military unit coin as one made for the 17th Infantry in Korea during 1950–1953, and says coins in the familiar modern style appeared during the Vietnam era. That chronology is the supplier’s account and should be attributed to it rather than treated as independently established archival consensus. Read the supplier’s history.
Deciding whether a coin is right for your team
Choose a challenge coin when the team wants a durable keepsake tied to a specific achievement and the design and order make practical sense. If the goal is simply to notify people, document a release, or recognize routine work, an existing digital or team communication may be enough. The coin works best as a tangible addition to meaningful recognition, not a substitute for explaining what the team accomplished.
