Use Symfony Panther to drive a real Chrome or Firefox browser: open the staging site, complete the authentication flow that site actually uses, wait until the protected page is ready, then call takeScreenshot(). For an existing staging host, set Panther’s external_base_uri. The login steps differ for HTTP Basic, a web form, and single sign-on, so first identify which gate protects the page.
What you need before taking the screenshot
- PHP and Composer in the environment where the test will run.
- Panther installed as a development dependency, plus a compatible ChromeDriver or GeckoDriver when required by your browser setup.
- A reachable staging URL and credentials provided through your project’s approved secret configuration.
- A browser window size chosen for the screenshot you need. The ordinary screenshot captures the browser viewport; do not assume it produces a full-page image.
Panther runs end-to-end tests through a real browser controlled by WebDriver. Symfony describes these tests as simulating how real users interact with an application through a browser. See the Symfony Panther guide for current installation and browser setup details.

Install Panther and connect it to staging
- From the PHP project directory, run
composer require --dev symfony/panther. - Install or configure a compatible ChromeDriver or GeckoDriver for the browser available in your local or CI environment, following the Panther setup guide.
- Create a Panther client and set
external_base_urito the existing staging origin. With an external server configured, Panther does not start its built-in web server. - Navigate to the protected path and authenticate using that site’s actual mechanism.
The example below assumes the protected staging page uses a login form with fields named username and password, a submit button, and a page-specific element with selector [data-testid="dashboard"] that appears when authentication is complete. Replace these selectors and the URL with those used by your application.
Example: authenticate through a form and save a screenshot
<?php
require __DIR__ . '/vendor/autoload.php';
use SymfonyComponentPantherPantherTestCase;
$client = PantherTestCase::createPantherClient([
'external_base_uri' => 'https://staging.example.com',
]);
$client->request('GET', '/login');
$client->waitFor('#username');
$client->getCrawler()->filter('#username')->sendKeys($_ENV['STAGING_USERNAME']);
$client->getCrawler()->filter('#password')->sendKeys($_ENV['STAGING_PASSWORD']);
$client->getCrawler()->filter('button[type="submit"]')->click();
// Wait for an authenticated-page signal, not merely for navigation to begin.
$client->waitFor('[data-testid="dashboard"]');
$client->takeScreenshot(__DIR__ . '/screen.png');
$client->quit();
This is a standalone illustration of the browser flow; use the client factory and test lifecycle that fit your project’s Panther version. Keep staging secrets out of committed source. The example writes screen.png to the project directory; ensure the process has permission to write there.

Choose the authentication flow your staging site uses
HTTP Basic authentication
HTTP Basic is identified by an unauthenticated response that includes a WWW-Authenticate challenge. It is not the same as a page containing username and password fields. Symfony’s HTTP Basic documentation describes that challenge behavior. Browser handling can vary with browser and driver configuration, so verify the challenge in your environment rather than assuming the form-login example applies. If the staging gate is provided by a reverse proxy, confirm how that proxy expects credentials to be supplied.
Application form login
For a standard login form, locate its actual fields and submit control, enter credentials from environment-backed secrets, and wait for an authenticated-page condition such as a unique heading or dashboard element. A successful click alone does not prove login succeeded: the application may show a validation message, redirect to a second step, or reject the account.
Single sign-on or identity-provider redirects
SSO can involve redirects, multi-factor authentication, consent, or a separate identity provider. Treat it as a distinct browser workflow or use a project-approved test setup; no single credential-injection recipe covers all identity systems. An older Panther issue describes one user’s CAS redirect problem, but it is an anecdotal report rather than a current general limitation or universal solution: Panther authentication issue.

Wait for the right state, then size the screenshot
Navigation starting is not the same as the page being ready. Wait for an element that proves the intended authenticated view has rendered, and use a condition appropriate to the page if content loads asynchronously. Panther provides helpers for waiting for elements and visibility; consult the Panther guide for the available helpers in your installed version.
Screenshot dimensions depend on the browser window size. Set the browser’s window dimensions through the supported Chrome arguments or Firefox resizing approach documented by Symfony. A normal takeScreenshot() call should not be treated as guaranteed full-page capture. If you need the whole document, verify the specific browser, driver, and capture approach you use instead of inferring it from the viewport screenshot example.
Browser choice and CI considerations
Panther supports Chrome and Firefox through WebDriver. Choose based on the browser and compatible driver available in your development or CI environment, the behavior of the staging authentication gate, and the dimensions you need. The cited Panther documentation does not establish which browser is faster or more reliable for this particular workflow, so test your target combination rather than relying on an unsupported performance assumption.

- Ensure CI can start the selected browser and driver, and that the staging host is reachable from that runner.
- Provide credentials through protected environment or secret configuration; avoid printing them in logs or embedding them in source.
- Use a stable, page-specific ready selector so a redesign or failed login does not silently produce a misleading image.
- Choose an output path writable by the test process and retain the screenshot only where your project’s access controls permit.
Troubleshooting common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Browser or driver fails to start | Browser, driver, or WebDriver setup is missing or incompatible. | Confirm the selected browser is installed and follow the current Panther setup instructions for the matching driver. |
| The URL returns a login page instead of the protected page | The request is unauthenticated, credentials were rejected, or the wrong gate was handled. | Identify whether the site uses Basic, a form, a proxy, or SSO; inspect the browser state and use the matching flow. |
| Wait for selector times out | The selector is wrong, the page has not finished loading, or authentication did not complete. | Check the rendered page and login outcome; wait for a stable element unique to the intended authenticated view. |
| Screenshot is cropped or too small | The capture reflects the current browser window dimensions, or the required content extends beyond the viewport. | Set the window size using the documented browser-specific setup and confirm whether viewport capture meets the requirement. |
| Screenshot file is missing | The process lacks write permission or the path is not where expected. | Use an absolute output path in a writable directory and confirm the test process user can create the file. |
| SSO redirects repeatedly or stalls | The identity-provider flow has additional steps or environment-specific behavior. | Inspect each redirect and use the project’s approved SSO test arrangement; do not treat a single anecdotal issue as a general Panther limitation. |

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Panther log in to every password-protected page the same way?
No. HTTP Basic, an application login form, a reverse-proxy gate, and SSO are different authentication flows; handle the one used by the staging site.
Does takeScreenshot() capture an entire long page?
Do not assume so. The basic call captures the browser view, whose dimensions depend on its window size; verify a full-page method for your browser and driver if needed.
