Capture a website with Puppeteer
Install Puppeteer in your Node.js project, then run this ES module. It launches Puppeteer’s bundled browser, navigates to the example page, writes a PNG, and closes the browser even if navigation or capture fails.

}The Puppeteer guide uses networkidle2 in its navigation example; treat it as one possible wait condition, not a guarantee that a page is fully rendered or will remain unchanged. Pages that load content after navigation need a wait that matches the content you intend to capture.
Choose what to capture
Viewport, full page, or clipped region
By default, page.screenshot() captures the visible viewport. Set fullPage: true to request the full page, or pass a clip rectangle to capture a specific region. captureBeyondViewport controls capture outside the viewport; its documented default is false without a clip and true when a clip is supplied.

Wait for the selector, then capture the returned element handle. Puppeteer scrolls the element into view when needed. If the element is removed from the DOM before capture, the method throws.

Puppeteer’s screenshot options support PNG and JPEG. PNG is the default; quality applies to formats such as JPEG, not PNG. A file path saves the image, with the extension used to infer its type; relative paths are resolved from the current working directory. Without a path, page.screenshot() returns image data instead of saving a file.

Use Chrome DevTools Protocol when you need protocol access
For ordinary screenshots, Puppeteer’s documented high-level page.screenshot() method is the direct choice. To access CDP methods or events, create a session attached to the page:

Browser choice and capture reliability
Puppeteer’s launch options list Chrome as the default browser and identify its bundled browser as the supported baseline. Puppeteer is only guaranteed to work with that bundled browser; using an installed Chrome version carries compatibility risk. For a reproducible setup, use the bundled browser rather than assuming an arbitrary installed Chrome version will behave identically.

Screenshot work also affects page operations in the same browser context: while a screenshot is in progress, BrowserContext.newPage(), Browser.newPage(), and Page.close() wait for it to finish. Page.bringToFront() does not wait for existing screenshot work.
Troubleshooting common capture problems
- The capture misses content loaded after navigation:
networkidle2is an example wait, not a universal readiness signal. Wait for the specific content or condition your page requires before callingscreenshot(). - The element screenshot throws: the element may have detached from the DOM. Wait for the selector again and capture a current handle.
- No image file appears: check that you supplied
path. Without it, Puppeteer returns data instead of writing to disk; also check the working directory when using a relative path. - Transparency is missing: use
omitBackground: true; otherwise the default background is included. - An installed Chrome behaves differently: switch to Puppeteer’s bundled browser, the browser baseline Puppeteer supports.
