Tailscale Said “Connected,” but My App Couldn’t Reach My PC. Both Were Right

A connected Tailscale client doesn’t guarantee that an app can reach a PC service. Trace the path, address, permissions, firewall, and service port separately.

Tailscale can be connected while a particular app still cannot reach a service on your PC. The status describes the Tailscale client and its network path; the app also depends on the right destination address, permission to reach it, firewall rules, and a working service on the expected port. Check those layers separately instead of treating “Connected” as proof that every app endpoint is available.

What “Connected” confirms—and what it doesn’t

A connected Tailscale client indicates that the device is participating in the tailnet; it does not establish that a particular app can reach a particular service. The app’s traffic still has to reach the intended PC address, be permitted by tailnet policy and firewalls, and arrive at a service that is listening on the port the app uses. Tailscale’s CLI reference and connection-types documentation describe separate status and connection-path checks.

That distinction explains how both messages can be accurate: Tailscale may have a path to the device, while the app’s specific destination or service remains unavailable. The title does not identify the app, operating systems, address, port, or network layout, so no single cause can be assumed.

Check the layers in order

  1. Confirm both devices are visible. On each device, check the Tailscale client version and run tailscale status. Confirm that the PC appears. Note whether the path is direct or relayed. If the PC is missing, investigate client status and tailnet access policy before troubleshooting the app. See Tailscale’s CLI documentation and access-control documentation.
  2. Test Tailscale’s path from the client device. Run tailscale ping <PC-name-or-Tailscale-IP>. This checks connectivity through Tailscale and reports the path, such as direct, DERP, or a peer relay. A relayed path is still a path; it may affect performance, but does not by itself show that the PC is unreachable. See the CLI reference and connection types.
  3. Compare tests that operate at different layers. Try ping <Tailscale-IP> and, if needed, tailscale ping --tsmp <PC-name-or-Tailscale-IP>. An operating-system ping tests ICMP. Tailscale’s tailscale ping checks its daemon connectivity and path; the --tsmp option tests through WireGuard while bypassing the host networking stack. A failed ICMP ping alone is inconclusive because a firewall may block ICMP. Consult the CLI reference and connection types.
  4. Check the exact address the app uses. If possible, try the PC’s Tailscale IP. If that works but a hostname does not, investigate DNS and the app’s hostname. If the app targets a LAN address, check whether subnet routing is configured and available. Tailscale’s DNS documentation and subnet-router documentation cover those cases.
  5. Verify the service endpoint and permissions. On the PC, confirm that the intended service is running and listening where expected. Check the app’s configured port, then review tailnet ACLs or grants and the PC’s local and network firewalls for permission to reach that destination and port. Tailscale’s access-control documentation explains tailnet rules; its firewall-ports guide addresses network firewall requirements. Because the app is unspecified, there is no universal port or service setting to recommend.
  6. Investigate a relay or network restriction only if the path points that way. If connectivity is relayed or relay service is unavailable, run tailscale netcheck, check general internet access, and review firewall restrictions on Tailscale traffic. Tailscale’s connection-types guide and troubleshooting guide explain further checks. Change firewall or NAT settings only after identifying the relevant constraint.

Read the results without over-interpreting them

  • The PC is absent from tailscale status: focus on device/client status and tailnet access before the app’s port or service.
  • tailscale ping succeeds, but the app fails: Tailscale has a path to the device. Check the app’s destination address, access rules, firewall, and service port; the successful path test does not establish that the app service is reachable.
  • ICMP ping fails: this does not prove that all traffic is blocked. ICMP may be filtered, so compare it with Tailscale’s own path diagnostics and test the actual app endpoint.
  • The Tailscale IP works but the app’s hostname or LAN address does not: investigate DNS for a hostname or subnet routing for a LAN destination.
  • The path is relayed: note the relay when considering performance, but do not treat relay use alone as proof that the PC cannot be reached.

Keep firewall changes narrow

Do not start by disabling a firewall or opening broad inbound access. Tailscale warns that some workarounds intended to help direct connectivity can also make other traffic easier to reach. Make only a targeted change for the necessary traffic, and reassess its security impact. See Tailscale’s firewall guidance.
