First enable MagicDNS and HTTPS Certificates in the tailnet admin console and accept that the device name will be published in Certificate Transparency. Then choose the setup that fits: tailscale cert creates certificate files you install and renew, while Tailscale Serve can provide an automatically managed HTTPS frontend for a local service. Neither is a single-command fix without those prerequisites.
Why Tailscale encryption does not remove a browser warning
Tailscale encrypts connections between devices on your tailnet, but that network encryption is separate from HTTPS certificate validation. A browser visiting an HTTPS URL expects a TLS certificate valid for the hostname in that URL. If the certificate is self-signed, mismatched, or otherwise untrusted, the browser can show a warning even when the network path is encrypted.

Tailscale explains that browsers, web APIs, and tools such as Visual Studio Code do not recognize tailnet encryption as a substitute for TLS certificates, and may warn or disable features when they do not see the expected certificate: Tailscale’s HTTPS certificate guide.

| Approach | Best fit | Certificate handling | Key constraint |
|---|---|---|---|
tailscale cert |
An application or web server that needs certificate and key files | Creates files locally; you install and renew them | Use the full MagicDNS .ts.net name; device names appear in public Certificate Transparency logs |
| Tailscale Serve | Sharing a local web service with devices on your tailnet | Serve terminates HTTPS with a provisioned certificate and proxies to the local service | Tailnet access controls apply; Serve is not Funnel |
Serve with https+insecure:// backend |
A local backend whose HTTPS certificate Serve cannot validate | Disables validation only on the Serve-to-backend connection | Does not make an invalid browser-facing certificate trusted |
See the Serve command reference for proxy behavior and the Tailscale Serve overview for its access scope and distinction from Funnel.

- NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
Enable HTTPS certificates for the tailnet
-
Open the DNS page in the Tailscale admin console and enable MagicDNS if it is not already enabled.
-
Enable HTTPS Certificates on that page.
-
Acknowledge the Certificate Transparency disclosure. Issued public certificates disclose the device name in a public log; that disclosure does not by itself make the device reachable from the public internet.
Tailscale’s setup guide documents these prerequisites and certificate provisioning.

- Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
- Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
Use tailscale cert when your server needs files
After enabling the prerequisites, run tailscale cert on each device that needs a certificate. Use the complete MagicDNS fully qualified name, for example machine-name.tailNNNN.ts.net, and make sure the browser URL uses that same name. A bare hostname such as https://machine-name is not covered by this certificate workflow.
The command writes certificate files; it does not install them into your web server or keep installed copies renewed for you. Configure your server to use the generated certificate and key, and arrange renewal and reloads for your deployment. Tailscale documents a 90-day lifetime for these Let’s Encrypt certificates. Avoid repeatedly requesting certificates while experimenting: Tailscale warns that rate limits can temporarily prevent further requests. See its certificate guide for current command details and status.
Use Serve when you want Tailscale to front a local service
If your goal is to reach a local HTTP application securely from tailnet devices, Serve can proxy that service and terminate HTTPS at its tailnet-facing frontend. Follow the command’s setup prompts if configuration such as HTTPS certificates still needs enabling. Serve is tailnet-scoped by default and respects your tailnet access controls; it is separate from Funnel, which is intended for exposing a service publicly. Details are in the Serve feature guide and CLI reference.

- Whole Home WiFi Coverage - Covers up to 6500 square feet with seamless high-performance Wi-Fi 6 and eliminate dead zones and buffering. Better than traditional WiFi booster and Range Extenders
- Connect More Devices - Deco X55(3-pack) is strong enough to connect up to 150 devices with strong and reliable Wi-Fi
- Our Cybersecurity Commitment - TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement
- More Gigabit Ports - Each Deco X55 has 3 Gigabit Ethernet ports(6 in total for a 2-pack) and supports Wired Ethernet Backhaul for better speeds. Any of them can work as a Wi-Fi Router
When the local backend also uses HTTPS
If Serve connects to a backend that presents a self-signed or otherwise unverifiable HTTPS certificate, the https+insecure:// pseudo-protocol can tell Serve to ignore validation for that backend connection. This affects only the connection from Serve to the local backend. The HTTPS certificate presented to the browser is a separate frontend connection and still needs to be valid for the URL the browser uses; the pseudo-protocol does not fix browser validation.

For Serve, check the Serve configuration and the local target separately: the browser validates Serve’s frontend certificate, while Serve connects to the backend according to its own protocol and validation settings.
-
Keep the Certificate Transparency disclosure in mind when choosing a device name, because public certificate issuance makes that name publicly visible.
