Tails and Qubes OS solve different problems. Choose Tails for a portable live session that routes internet connections through Tor. Choose Qubes OS when you want to separate activities—such as work, personal browsing, and untrusted files—into isolated virtual machines on one computer. Neither makes you invulnerable, and Qubes alone does not make ordinary browsing anonymous.
How do Tails and Qubes OS protect you?
| Question | Tails | Qubes OS |
|---|---|---|
| Core approach | A live operating system designed to route network connections through Tor. | A desktop operating system that separates security domains into virtual machines under Xen. |
| Best-fit use | A portable session where Tor-routed access is central. | Ongoing work on compatible hardware where you want distinct compartments for different activities. |
| What it does not guarantee | Tor use is not invisible to a local network by default, and Tor does not encrypt every connection to its final destination. | Apps within one qube are not isolated from each other, and ordinary Qubes qubes do not provide anonymity by themselves. |
| Persistence | Designed for live USB use; optional Persistent Storage can retain selected files and settings. | An installed desktop system with separate qubes and templates; it can also be installed to an external USB drive, with a speed trade-off. |
| Hardware demands | The computer must boot and support Tails; compatibility issues can occur. | Requires compatible hardware, virtualization features, and IOMMU support for its isolation model. |
The distinction is about the threat you are trying to address. Tails centers on the route your internet traffic takes. Qubes centers on containing activity in separate domains. One is not a universal upgrade over the other.

What does Tails do for private browsing?
Tails routes internet connections through Tor and blocks other internet connections by default unless software is configured to use Tor. Tor can hide your location from destination sites, but that does not mean every observer is unaware of your Tor connection. Tails explains that an internet service provider (ISP) and local network can see that you connect to Tor, even though they cannot see which sites you visit through that connection. A Tor bridge may help conceal the fact that you are connecting to Tor. See Tails’ explanation of Tor and its limits.
Tor also does not encrypt every leg of a connection. Traffic travels from a Tor exit relay to the destination site; if that site uses HTTP rather than HTTPS, the final leg is not encrypted by HTTPS. Use HTTPS where available, and do not treat Tails as end-to-end encryption for all browsing.

Does Tails leave traces on the computer?
Tails is built around a live USB workflow, but “nothing persists” is too broad: its optional Persistent Storage can retain selected data and settings. If you rely on Persistent Storage, plan for a backup. Tails’ requirements material recommends keeping a same-size backup Tails stick for users who use Persistent Storage. Check the current Tails requirements and compatibility information before preparing a drive; the computer must be able to boot Tails, and compatibility can vary.
How does Qubes OS compartmentalize activity?
Qubes describes its model as security by isolation, or compartmentalization: activities run in separate security domains implemented as lightweight virtual machines under Xen. If a browser or file in one qube is compromised, the design aims to prevent that compromise from automatically crossing into other qubes. The system includes mechanisms such as secure clipboard and file transfer, disposable VMs, and network VMs. Its security design documentation explains the intended boundaries.

- Compatible Models: Width: 13 9/16" (13.5 inch/344 mm), Height: 7 5/8" (7.6 inch/194 mm), Diagonal: 15.6" (396.24 mm) widescreen laptops which have a 16:9 aspect ratio. Not touchscreen compatible !!! Not fit for 16:10.Do NOT rely solely on your laptop’s diagonal size when ordering. Use a ruler to measure your screen’s visible area (excluding the black bezels). If the width reads 344mm and height reads 194mm, this filter is a perfect match for your device.
- Keep Information Privacy: Effective "black out" privacy from side views outside the 60-degree viewing angle. Designed for optical clarity when viewing from the front, a person not at the front of the screen can only see the dark side of the screen, so it protects buisness secrets and personal privacy
- Eye and Screen Protection: Privacy filter does not only protect your private life but also protects your eyes by blocking 30% of blue light , blocking the harmful blue light between 380 - 495nm, it filters out the blue light and relieves eye strain. Our laptop privacy screen also helps keep your screen safe from dust and scratches
- Perfect For Open Workspaces: Great for maintaining screen privacy in high traffic areas such as open work spaces, airports, airplanes, commuter trains, coffee shops and other public places, etc
- Easy Installation: Choose between 2 simple Options; Slide-On/Off or Mounted. Not touchscreen compatible
For example, you could keep work, personal browsing, banking, and web research in separate qubes rather than using one general-purpose environment for everything. Qubes app qubes can be based on templates, and the getting-started guide says an app qube cannot modify its template. This can help limit damage across compartments, but it is not a sandbox between applications running in the same qube.
Where does Qubes’ isolation stop?
Applications within the same qube do not receive additional isolation from one another. If a browser is compromised, information and applications in that domain may still be exposed. Separate especially sensitive activity into distinct qubes instead of assuming that Qubes automatically isolates every app. The Qubes security design goals make this boundary explicit.

Does Qubes make you anonymous?
No—not by itself. Qubes’ FAQ says it “does not claim to provide special privacy (as opposed to security) properties in non-Whonix qubes.” Compartmentalization can help contain compromise, but ordinary browsing in Qubes is not anonymous simply because it runs in a qube. Privacy-oriented configurations are a separate choice; do not conflate them with Qubes’ default security model. See the Qubes OS FAQ.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What hardware and setup do they require?
Qubes OS
Qubes is more demanding about hardware compatibility. Its installation guide recommends Qubes-certified hardware because other systems may require significant troubleshooting. Virtualization must be supported, and IOMMU-based virtualization must be enabled in BIOS or UEFI for Qubes to enforce its isolation model. Qubes is intended to be installed directly on hardware, not as a guest operating system inside another virtual machine. The guide specifies at least 32 GiB of free space on the installation destination. Consult the Qubes installation guide for current requirements before installing.

- Dual USB-A & USB-C Bootable Drive – works with almost any PC or laptop (UEFI & Legacy BIOS). Boot Tails directly from the USB for secure, private sessions anywhere.
- Persistent Encrypted Storage Included – securely save documents, browser settings, and encryption keys in a protected area of the USB. Data is accessible only with your password.
- Maximum Privacy & Anonymity – all internet traffic is routed through Tor, preventing tracking, fingerprinting, and censorship while keeping communications private.
- Run Live or Use Persistently – choose a temporary session that leaves no trace, or enable persistence to keep important files and configurations safely between reboots.
- Premium Hardware & Reliable Support – built with high-quality flash chips for speed and longevity. TECH STORE ON provides responsive customer support within 24 hours.
Qubes can be installed to an external USB drive, but the guide cautions that USB drives are typically much slower than internal SSDs. The installer medium and installation destination normally need to be separate devices. An external installation can be useful for trying Qubes, but it may be less comfortable for everyday use.
Tails
Tails is designed around booting from a USB stick, so its suitability depends on whether the computer can boot it and supports its hardware. If you enable Persistent Storage, the project recommends a same-size backup stick. Verify the current requirements before preparing your setup; compatibility guidance and device requirements can change.
Best Value

- Easy Plug-And-Play: The Brio 101 works with most video calling platforms, including Microsoft Teams, Zoom and Google Meet—no hassle; it just works
Which operating system should you choose?
- Choose Tails if you need a portable live environment and want internet connections routed through Tor by default, and you accept the USB-based workflow and Tor’s visibility and encryption limits.
- Choose Qubes OS if you need ongoing separation between activities on one machine, can use compatible hardware, and are prepared to manage distinct qubes and their boundaries.
- Do not choose either on the assumption that it solves every privacy or security problem. Tails does not make Tor use invisible by default; Qubes does not make ordinary browsing anonymous or isolate applications within one qube.
These systems address different layers of risk. Some setups may combine compartmentalization with anonymity-oriented tools, but Tails and Qubes are not interchangeable, and neither alone protects against every threat.
