Do not connect a pump to a cable just because it is called a tach cable. “Tach cable” can refer to a mechanical tachometer drive, an electronic tach signal, or a tach generator connection. Those are different circuits, and the name alone cannot identify a safe pump connection. Find the exact vehicle or machine, controller, and pump documentation before wiring anything.
What “tach cable” can mean
A tachometer measures or tracks rotational speed, but its connection varies by equipment. It may use a mechanical drive, an electrical signal wire, or a tach generator that produces a signal for a controller. None of those terms, by itself, establishes that the cable supplies power to a pump.

- Mechanical tachometer drive: a physical drive connection for a tachometer, not an identified pump power lead.
- Electronic tach signal: a signal connection used by a tachometer or control system to represent engine speed.
- Tach generator or tracking signal: equipment-specific speed information, such as the optional tach-generator or DC tracking signal described for an industrial gear-pump application.
The exact-title page from BlinksAndButtons, updated September 11, 2026, discusses mechanical and electronic tachometer links but asserts a pump-to-tach-cable relationship without identifying a vehicle or showing a model-specific diagram. That claim is not a safe basis for wiring instructions: BlinksAndButtons’ guide.

How pump control and tach output differ
The AMP EFI MS3Pro manual provides a concrete example of two separate circuits. Its fuel-pump output is a low-side driver rated for a maximum of 3 A, and the manual directs it to operate a separate relay rather than drive the pump directly. The manual discusses tach output separately, describing a 0–12 V square wave wired to the tach signal wire. The tach output is not the fuel-pump output.

This is specific to the MS3Pro manual, not a universal wiring diagram or a rating for other controllers. The copy is hosted by Manualzz; consult current manufacturer documentation for the exact controller before making a connection: AMP EFI MS3Pro User Manual, sections 4.8–4.9.
What to establish before connecting a pump
- Identify the equipment. Record the vehicle or machine make, model, year, engine, pump model, and controller model. The word “tach” is not enough to identify a circuit.
- Locate the matching wiring diagram. Use the manufacturer’s manual for that exact vehicle, machine, or controller. Check whether the proposed connection is expressly shown or specified.
- Confirm the pump-control output. Find the output type and current rating in the controller documentation, then follow its stated method for switching the pump.
- Follow the pump and vehicle requirements. Select relay, fuse, wire, and connectors for the actual load and the manufacturers’ instructions. The MS3Pro example does not establish ratings or wire colors for another installation.
- Stop if the wiring remains uncertain. Do not infer a power connection from a cable name or guess at a terminal. Ask a qualified technician to identify the circuit.
Before seeking model-specific guidance, gather the equipment identifiers and a clear photo or diagram of the cable and connectors. Those details can distinguish a speed signal from a pump-control circuit.

Why the equipment’s own manual matters
Different equipment can use tach-related connections for different purposes. A 1997 Mercury outboard service-manual excerpt includes a tachometer signal terminal and separately covers fuel-pump service; it does not establish a universal connection between them. An ITW Dynatec industrial adhesive-pump manual describes an optional tach generator or DC tracking signal for gear-pump speed control. Neither example can be transferred to an unidentified system.

When a relay kit may be appropriate
A separate relay may be required when a controller output is intended to switch a relay rather than carry pump current. In the MS3Pro example, the manual specifies a low-side fuel-pump output with a 3 A maximum and says not to wire the pump directly to the ECU. That does not mean every pump needs the same relay, fuse, wiring, or connectors. Use a kit only if the documentation for the actual controller and pump calls for that arrangement, and verify that every component meets the manufacturers’ specifications.
