The deciding factors are the student’s assignments, required apps, typing needs, accessibility supports, and school rules. Check those before buying; a keyboard may be essential for some students, while others may be better served by a school-supported laptop or Chromebook.
What tablets do well for school
Reading, annotation, and handwriting
A touchscreen is convenient for reading digital materials, marking up documents, and writing by hand. A stylus can support handwriting or drawing when the specific tablet model is compatible with one. These uses are most compelling when they match the student’s coursework rather than being added simply because the device supports touch.

Creative work and classroom activities
Tablets can suit drawing, photography, and media creation, and may fit classroom workflows built around education apps. Apple documents classroom and Schoolwork features for managed iPad deployments, but vendor descriptions establish what the tools do—not that they improve learning compared with other devices. Built-in accessibility controls may help students with vision, mobility, hearing, or cognitive access needs. Apple lists accessibility features for iPad, while Google describes Chromebook tools such as Reading Mode, Select-to-speak, and magnification. The presence of a feature does not establish that it meets a particular student’s needs; check the student’s accommodations and try the relevant tools with support. Access to a tool is not the same as being able to use it effectively. The Institute of Education Sciences has discussed a gap between accessibility-tool availability and use in digital assessment, and points to instruction, guided practice, and regular opportunities to use the tools. Where a tablet can be inconvenient
Long-form typing
Typing essays, reports, or sustained notes on a touchscreen can be less comfortable than using physical keys. A compatible external keyboard can address that, but it changes the setup and adds to the total cost. Confirm that the keyboard works with the exact tablet model and that the student’s school apps support the intended workflow.

App and browser differences
A school’s website or productivity workflow may not behave the same in a mobile app as it does in a full web browser. Apple’s Education Community guide specifically notes that Google Workspace apps on iPad have limited functionality compared with their web versions. That is a reason to test the actual required tasks—not proof that every Google Workspace feature is unavailable on every iPad. Apple Education Community: Google Workspace on iPad
School setup and assessments
Some schools manage devices, require particular accounts or software, or restrict which devices can be used for assessments. Apple’s deployment guidance covers both shared and one-to-one iPad setups and mobile device management; Apple also provides guidance on iPad use for assessments. Ask the school whether personal tablets are supported, how accounts are configured, which apps are required, and what devices are permitted during tests. Does a tablet help students learn more?
Not by itself. The Education Endowment Foundation’s 2019 guidance recommends using digital technology purposefully to improve teaching or learning. Its guidance addresses digital technology broadly, not tablets specifically or screen time. The EEF’s announcement put it plainly: “buying a tablet for every pupil is unlikely to boost pupil attainment.” That statement is not the result of a randomized head-to-head trial of tablets against laptops; it cautions against treating device ownership as a learning strategy. EEF guidance report on digital technology · EEF announcement, 29 March 2019
There is also no tablet-specific causal finding here that establishes how much tablets distract students or affect outcomes. A device’s effect depends on what the student is asked to do and how the technology is integrated into teaching.

How to choose between a tablet, keyboard setup, and laptop
Compare the actual school-supported options against the student’s work. The following distinctions are practical starting points, not claims that one category produces better academic results.
| Option | Likely fit | Check before choosing |
|---|---|---|
| Tablet alone | Reading, annotation, handwriting, drawing, and touch-first activities | Required apps, browser-based tasks, typing volume, school account setup, and assessment rules |
| Tablet with keyboard | A student who wants tablet strengths but regularly types longer work | Keyboard compatibility with the exact model, app support, typing comfort, and added accessory cost |
| School-supported laptop or Chromebook | Work that depends on sustained typing, web or desktop-style workflows, or school-managed compatibility | Required software, accessibility tools, school management, and whether the device is available or required |
Chromebooks have education-oriented tools and built-in accessibility features described by Google for Education. Apple’s materials describe managed iPad deployment and education workflows. Neither vendor’s product information is independent evidence of superior learning outcomes. Google for Education: Chromebooks

Check these points with the school before buying
- Required apps and websites: Ask for the exact apps, browser-based platforms, and assignments students must complete. Check mobile-app limitations where relevant.
- Accounts and management: Find out whether students use school-managed accounts, whether personal devices can be enrolled, and what restrictions apply.
- Assessment compatibility: Confirm which devices and apps are allowed for online tests and whether the school requires a managed device.
- Typing expectations: Consider how often the student will write essays, reports, or other long assignments, and whether a physical keyboard is practical.
- Accessibility and accommodations: Identify the specific features the student needs and whether the school can help configure and teach them.
- Total setup cost: Include a compatible keyboard and protective case if the student’s workflow requires them; a stylus is relevant only if the chosen model supports it and handwriting or drawing is useful.
What U.S. school-device availability figures show
For the 2024–25 school year, 88% of U.S. public schools had a one-to-one computing program, according to the National Center for Education Statistics. Among public schools with such a program, 89% made laptops available and 27% made tablets available. These are school device-availability figures, not a measure of how many students used each device and not evidence that one device improves academic performance. They also do not describe private schools or other countries. NCES: Educational technology
