One T95 H616 Android TV box made several internet connections during first setup, before its testers signed in or deliberately opened preinstalled apps. The unit also reported an Android security patch level of December 5, 2019, and showed a Pixel 2 software identity on TV-box hardware. Those are reasons for caution, but they do not prove that the box was infected, committed ad fraud, or uploaded personal data. The findings apply to the specific unit inspected—not every product sold as a T95.
What the T95 test examined
Smart Home Perfected reported buying the unit for $51.49 from an Amazon listing on September 23, 2026. Its label described an Allwinner H616 device with Android 10, 4 GB of memory, and 32 GB of storage. Those are label specifications; the report did not verify performance or establish that other T95 listings use the same hardware or software. Smart Home Perfected’s report says its findings concern the purchased unit.

On October 4, 2026, the testers connected it over Ethernet on a separate bench network. They did not use Wi-Fi, sign in to Google, or deliberately launch preinstalled apps. They recorded outbound connections and local DNS lookups, then inspected system properties, package information, and logs in one session. A packet-size issue initially prevented one connection from completing; the network was corrected. The report’s planned October 4–7 baseline was still incomplete when it was published, so this was not a completed three-day observation.

What happened when it first connected
The initial connection list included time synchronization and Google connectivity checks, as well as connections associated with Baidu and a preinstalled Adups updater. It also included Google push-notification and Firebase services, plus Prime Video and Amazon advertising services. The report identifies destinations and connection activity; it does not establish what encrypted traffic contained.

A connection to an advertising endpoint is not, by itself, evidence of ad fraud. The report does not provide a complete upload total, and it says its initial record does not establish personal-data uploads. Nor did the testers observe the box relaying other people’s internet traffic. These limits matter: a list of contacted services can raise questions, but it cannot answer every question about the data exchanged or what the device might do later.
What the patch date and Pixel identity indicate
The examined unit reported an Android security patch level of December 5, 2019. That is a declared system field, not an independent audit of every security fix. It is nevertheless a substantial support-currency concern for a device inspected in 2026: the report offers no evidence that the unit had received newer patches.

The inspection also found a Pixel 2-associated Android fingerprint and Google brand and manufacturer values on TV-box hardware. Smart Home Perfected could not determine why those values were present and did not establish that every service accepted them. The mismatch makes the software identity harder to trust; it does not, by itself, show that the box was malicious.

Separate investigations reported malware on affected T95 devices in 2022–23. In May 2023, TechCrunch described researcher Daniel Milisic’s findings that an AllWinner T95 communicated with command-and-control servers and carried a clickbot payload; the article said EFF security researcher Bill Budington independently confirmed findings after buying an affected device. The Electronic Frontier Foundation also published an account. These reports are historical context about investigated devices, not evidence that every T95 variant—or the unit inspected in 2026—had the same infection. They do not establish a market-wide infection rate.

Why the result cannot be generalized to every T95
T95 is a product label used across listings and configurations; the current report explicitly cautions that it does not guarantee identical software. A 2022 AndroidPCtv overview describes one H616 variant with quad-core Allwinner H616 hardware, Mali-G31 graphics, microSD expansion, dual-band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, USB 2.0, 10/100 Ethernet, HDMI, and an IR remote. That same overview says the described variant lacked certificates needed for higher-resolution playback on most paid streaming services. Those details describe that variant, not every T95 listing.
A 2020 AndroidPCtv firmware page lists other RAM, storage, and Wi-Fi configurations, along with two USB 2.0 ports, Ethernet, analog AV, HDMI 2.0, and microSD. Historical specifications and firmware listings do not demonstrate that a given unit has current vendor support or receives security updates. Streaming compatibility can also depend on certification, so hardware labels alone do not establish the resolution or service experience a buyer will get.

Should you use the inspected T95?
Given the old declared patch level and inaccurate software identity, Smart Home Perfected says it would favor an established streaming device over the inspected unit. The report did not test replacement devices as part of its T95 inspection, so its recommendation is a cautious decision based on the observed concerns—not a comparative performance result.
If choosing a replacement, compare the streaming services and resolution you need, device update and support practices, form factor, and price. Smart Home Perfected reported that these options were in stock on Amazon on October 5, 2026; its prices are a dated snapshot, not current quotes:

If you own the box and are deciding what to do, the report suggests considering disconnecting it while you decide whether to return or replace it. If you continue using it, its guidance is to isolate it from other household devices on the network and verify that the guest network really separates devices. Isolation can limit access to other devices; it does not update or repair the box.
Why reflashing is not a confirmed fix
A community GitHub repository describes an SD-card firmware installation process for an H616 T95/T95H and warns that flashing erases the card. That is community documentation, not proof of manufacturer support, compatibility with every T95 configuration, or a secure outcome. A 2020 firmware page’s malware-cleanup recommendation likewise does not establish a complete, currently supported remediation. Smart Home Perfected says it has not verified a complete software remedy. Do not treat a firmware file or reflashing procedure as a generally safe fix for this device.
