If you need to message someone beyond cell-tower coverage, the right alternative depends on your phone, location, and whether you need ordinary texts or emergency help. Apple Messages via satellite can suit people with a compatible iPhone in a supported region; Verizon documents satellite messaging and SOS for supported phones; and Garmin inReach is a separate communicator for trips where you want satellite messaging and SOS with an active subscription. None guarantees that a message will get through.
Compare the main alternatives
| Option | What it can do | What you need to check |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Messages via satellite | Send and receive iMessage or SMS on a compatible iPhone, where supported. | iPhone model, iOS version, active SIM, country or region, and a clear view of the sky and horizon. |
| Garmin inReach Messenger Plus | Satellite messaging through a dedicated communicator; Garmin also documents SOS and other satellite features. | Compatible inReach communicator, active satellite subscription, and sky visibility. |
| Verizon satellite messaging and SOS | Satellite messaging and SOS on supported phones; select Android phones use Skylo connectivity. | Exact phone and feature compatibility, supported geography, current carrier details, and clear line of sight to the satellite. |
These services are not interchangeable, and the table is not a ranking: available functions depend on the device and location. For comparison, see Apple’s Messages via satellite guidance, the Garmin inReach Messenger Plus manual, and Verizon’s satellite messaging and SOS FAQs.

Apple Messages via satellite: use a compatible iPhone
Apple says iPhone 14 or later can send and receive iMessage or SMS via satellite in the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Japan, subject to the required iOS version, an active SIM, and satellite connection conditions. Apple says the feature is free for two years after activation of an iPhone 14 or later; check Apple’s current guidance for the applicable details and regional availability.

Do not confuse messaging with Emergency SOS
Messages via satellite is for communicating with people, not contacting emergency services. Apple says to use Emergency SOS via satellite for emergencies. That is a separate feature with its own device, software, and regional availability requirements; check Apple’s Emergency SOS via satellite guidance for the supported locations and steps.
Garmin inReach: a separate communicator for remote trips
A Garmin inReach communicator is an option if you are willing to carry dedicated hardware instead of relying only on your phone. Garmin’s inReach Messenger Plus manual describes photo, voice, and longer-text messaging with inReach Plus services. The Garmin Messenger app’s satellite features—including SOS, tracking, and weather—require a connected inReach communicator and an active satellite subscription. The device alone is not a phone-service replacement.

Garmin says an SOS message is sent to Garmin Response to request help. Satellite access requires a clear view of the sky; consult the inReach Messenger manual for device guidance and the inReach Messenger Plus manual for its service requirements and features.

Verizon’s support information covers satellite messaging and SOS on supported devices, including Skylo connectivity for select Android phones. Compatibility and features vary by phone, and supported geography is limited. Before relying on it, check Verizon’s current satellite FAQs for your model, location, and intended feature. Verizon says a clear line of sight to the satellite is required.

- Check in with contacts directly by using preset messages that do not count toward your allotted text messages (Active satellite subscription required. Some jurisdictions regulate or prohibit the use of satellite communication devices)
- Share your GPS location (Active satellite subscription required. Some jurisdictions regulate or prohibit the use of satellite communication devices)
Apple also notes that operator-provided satellite features require a supported operator and that some providers may require a qualifying plan. See Apple’s guidance on network operator-provided satellite features and confirm current terms with the carrier.

- For routine texts on a phone you already own: check Apple Messages via satellite if you have an eligible iPhone and will be in a supported region. Verizon may also be relevant if your exact phone and location are supported.
- For remote travel where SOS matters: consider whether carrying a dedicated Garmin inReach communicator and maintaining its subscription fits your trip. Confirm the device’s features and service terms before departure.
- For an emergency: use a feature specifically intended to contact emergency services, such as Emergency SOS via satellite where available, rather than treating an ordinary message as an SOS request.
- For any option: check supported geography, device and software eligibility, required carrier or subscription terms, and whether you can get a clear view of the sky.
T-Mobile describes T-Satellite as a direct-to-cell service for areas beyond tower reach, but warns that satellite service—including texts to 911 or emergency services—may be delayed, limited, or unavailable. Its warning is a useful reminder that satellite messaging is not guaranteed, regardless of provider. See T-Mobile’s T-Satellite service information.

What is not yet a settled alternative
On May 14, 2026, AT&T announced that AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon had an agreement in principle to form a joint venture using satellite direct-to-device technology to address coverage gaps. An agreement in principle is a plan, not proof of a currently purchasable service with settled consumer availability or terms. See AT&T’s announcement.
