T-Mobile’s warning about Starlink replacing cellular service came from outgoing CFO Peter Osvaldik—not T-Mobile U.S. CTO John Saw. Osvaldik argued that satellite-to-phone service cannot substitute for terrestrial wireless because signals struggle to penetrate buildings and vehicle windows. That is his argument about replacement, not proof that satellite service has no value: T-Mobile’s CEO has described it as a complementary way to connect in coverage gaps.
Who gave Starlink the reality check?
Light Reading reported that Peter Osvaldik, T-Mobile’s outgoing chief financial officer, criticized the idea that direct-to-cell satellite service could replace a terrestrial mobile network. The report attributed the remarks to Osvaldik at Citi’s 2026 Global TMT Conference. It did not attribute them to John Saw, T-Mobile U.S.’s chief technology officer.

Osvaldik’s reported wording was blunt: “The physics just don’t allow direct-to-cell to be a substitute product … You can’t get through buildings, walls. You can’t even get through a Tesla windscreen.” This is an executive’s assessment of the technology’s limits, not a published independent test.
Is Starlink meant to replace cell service?
The distinction is between a replacement for a carrier’s terrestrial network and a supplement that adds connectivity where that network is weak or absent. T-Mobile’s public comments frame satellite-to-phone service as the latter. On the Q2 2026 earnings call, T-Mobile U.S. CEO Srini Gopalan called it “a complementary service” and said, “Direct- to- cell is really a technology that in many ways we worked with Starlink to invent.”

SpaceX describes its Direct to Cell architecture as satellites that “function essentially as cell towers in space to expand terrestrial coverage into otherwise unreached areas.” The company’s February 2025 document says partner operators provide LTE spectrum in the 1.6–2.7 GHz range, enabling the satellite service to integrate with operators and serve their wireless subscribers. That does not make the satellite link equivalent to a conventional tower network or establish it as a standalone replacement for one.
Why do buildings and vehicle windows matter?
A phone communicating with a satellite needs a usable radio path to a satellite overhead. Obstructions such as buildings and some vehicle glass can weaken or block that path. Osvaldik’s penetration criticism therefore points to an important practical difference: a satellite link may help in an open area beyond tower coverage, while a terrestrial network is designed to serve people indoors and in built-up places through its distributed infrastructure.
SpaceX’s February 2025 account also identifies Doppler shift, latency, low handset antenna gain and handset transmit power as engineering challenges. These constraints help explain why satellite-to-phone connectivity is a distinct service with different conditions and capabilities—not simply terrestrial 5G delivered from farther away.

What do the usage figures show—and what don’t they show?
On T-Mobile’s Q2 2026 earnings call, Gopalan said satellite service accounted for 0.0002% of network usage previously and 0.0003% in the busiest summer months. These are figures the CEO gave for the service’s share of T-Mobile network usage, not independent measurements or estimates of the entire market. He also described usage as lower than expected and concentrated mainly in national parks.
Those comments suggest that the service was a small part of T-Mobile’s network usage at that time. They do not establish its long-term addressable market or prove that demand cannot grow. In April 2026, Light Reading reported that T-Mobile had not disclosed a T-Satellite customer count or detailed usage metrics.
How has the service developed?
SpaceX’s February 2025 company document said the first Direct to Cell satellites launched in January 2024 and described U.S. commercial approval in November 2024. It reported more than 400 satellites launched for the network and said millions of messages were sent in 2024 during beta testing and emergency scenarios. Those are company-reported figures from that document, not a current constellation count or an independent usage audit.

In April 2026, Light Reading described T-Satellite as using a constellation of 650 low-Earth-orbit satellites. That later figure is from Light Reading’s reporting and should not be conflated with SpaceX’s earlier, dated report of more than 400. SpaceX’s 2025 document described the service as beginning with messaging and listed data, voice and IoT as future service areas at that time; it does not establish their present availability or terms.

Can Starlink compete with T-Mobile while partnering with it?
Partnership and competition can coexist. T-Mobile has a Starlink service partnership and a business broadband tie-up, while rejecting the prospect of a Starlink MVNO deal and disputing the idea that satellite service can replace its 5G network. A carrier partnership uses the operator’s spectrum and connects into its subscriber relationship; an MVNO arrangement would be a different commercial model. The reported criticism is aimed at replacement, not at every use of satellite connectivity.
The available public comments also leave important commercial questions unanswered. They do not establish a confirmed U.S. direct-to-consumer Starlink Mobile launch date, pricing or terms. Current device compatibility, plans and service availability should be checked against official company information rather than inferred from the technical description or executives’ comments.
