T-Mobile Cellular Data and Wi-Fi Calling Not Working? 12 Checks to Try

Separate cellular data problems from Wi-Fi Calling failures, then follow 12 conditional checks based on the symptoms and phone involved.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If T-Mobile cellular data or Wi-Fi Calling is failing, first work out which connection is affected: mobile data, Wi-Fi internet, Wi-Fi Calling, or several at once. The checks below follow T-Mobile’s troubleshooting guidance, but they are conditional steps—not twelve guaranteed fixes. Start with an outage check, then use the branch that matches your symptoms.

First, identify what is not working

Wi-Fi internet, T-Mobile mobile data, and Wi-Fi Calling are different things. Wi-Fi Calling uses an internet connection to place calls; it does not restore cellular data.

  • Cellular data fails, but calls work: focus on coverage or an outage, mobile-data settings, network mode, account setup, APN settings, and phone compatibility.
  • Wi-Fi internet works, but Wi-Fi Calling does not: check whether Wi-Fi Calling is enabled and whether the internet connection meets T-Mobile’s requirements.
  • Both cellular service and Wi-Fi Calling fail: restart the phone, then check for an outage and run T-Life’s device troubleshooter.
  • The trouble began after changing phones or moving a SIM/eSIM: check phone compatibility and line setup with T-Life or T-Mobile rather than assuming a device setting is the cause.

To separate mobile data from Wi-Fi, switch Wi-Fi off briefly and try loading a website. To test Wi-Fi Calling, connect to a known working Wi-Fi network and try a call. T-Mobile recommends turning Wi-Fi off when checking whether its mobile data connection works. See T-Mobile’s internet and data troubleshooting guidance.

Try these 12 checks in order

1. Check for a T-Mobile outage

Look at T-Mobile’s network outage information before changing phone settings. A local network issue can affect service; if T-Mobile resolves an outage but the phone still will not connect, power-cycle it.

  • Wi-Fi 7
  • Wide Device Compatibility Works with PCs, smart TVs, smartphones, gaming consoles, and smart home devices

2. Run T-Life’s troubleshooter on the affected phone

  1. Open the T-Life app.
  2. Choose Manage, then select the affected device.
  3. Choose Troubleshoot this device.

T-Mobile says the tool checks items including account setup, whether the phone needs a restart or software update, recent tower issues, and connection settings such as Wi-Fi Calling, roaming, cellular data, airplane mode, and battery saver. For a past location, use Network Check and Check another location. See T-Mobile’s T-Life troubleshooting instructions.

3. Restart the phone

Restart the device and test the affected connection again. This is a reasonable early check for data or calling trouble, and T-Mobile also recommends power-cycling after an outage is resolved. If the phone remains disconnected, continue rather than repeatedly restarting it.

4. Confirm cellular data is on and airplane mode is off

Check the phone’s connection settings for cellular or mobile data and airplane mode. Labels and menu paths differ across phones and software versions; T-Life can also check these settings. If only one app cannot connect while other apps work, go to check 8 instead of treating it as a general network failure.

5. Check the available network mode

In the phone’s mobile-network settings, use an available supported option such as Auto or the current 2G/3G/4G/LTE choices appropriate to that device. T-Mobile’s data guidance discusses these options, but the choices and menu path vary by model. Follow the model-specific instructions rather than selecting an obsolete or unsupported mode.

6. Reset Android APNs to default when appropriate

An APN (Access Point Name) tells a phone how to connect to a carrier’s data network. If mobile data fails on an Android phone—particularly a non-T-Mobile device—use the phone’s option to reset APNs to default and follow T-Mobile’s BYOD instructions where applicable. Do not guess APN, MCC, or MNC values: T-Mobile warns that incorrect APN settings can disrupt mobile data. Its overview explains what an APN is and how access point names work.

7. Check whether the problem is limited to a browser or app

If other apps or websites work, the connection may not be the cause. For a browser-only problem, T-Mobile suggests clearing its cache, cookies, and history. If the issue started after installing an app, consider whether that app is involved. These are targeted checks, not general fixes for a phone with no mobile data.

8. Turn on Wi-Fi Calling and confirm the Wi-Fi internet works

Check that Wi-Fi Calling is enabled in the phone’s settings, then make sure the phone actually has internet access over Wi-Fi. T-Mobile lists a minimum of 2 Mbps upload and 2 Mbps download for Wi-Fi Calling. It says satellite internet and phone hotspots are not supported for this feature. Details are in T-Mobile’s Wi-Fi Calling guidance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

9. Try Wi-Fi Calling on another Wi-Fi network

If Wi-Fi internet works but Wi-Fi Calling does not, test the feature on another reliable Wi-Fi connection if one is available. If it works there, the first network may be involved; if it fails on both, check the phone’s Wi-Fi Calling setting and line setup through T-Life. T-Mobile’s requirements establish that internet access is needed, but they do not guarantee that every Wi-Fi network will support the feature.

10. Recheck account setup and recent device changes

Use T-Life to check account setup and connection settings, especially if you recently changed phones or moved a SIM or eSIM. If the phone is not sold by T-Mobile, check its compatibility before assuming the line or network is at fault. A device can be only partially compatible, which may mean reduced coverage or slower data. T-Mobile’s BYOD guide covers phones brought to its network.

11. Consider a network settings reset only after simpler checks

A network reset may help when connection settings are at issue, but it has a cost: T-Mobile notes that resetting network settings removes saved Wi-Fi networks and Bluetooth pairings. If you proceed, use the current instructions and menu path for your specific phone; the steps differ by device. See T-Mobile’s data troubleshooting guidance for its reset recommendations.

12. Contact T-Mobile or the phone manufacturer

If an outage, basic settings, T-Life checks, and compatibility do not explain the problem, contact T-Mobile to check the line, account, or network side. For a device-specific setting or procedure, use the phone manufacturer’s guidance. T-Mobile’s calling-issues guidance also covers calling problems that persist.

Which path should you follow?

What you observe Start with
Mobile data fails, but calls work Outage and location; cellular-data setting; network mode; account setup; Android APN reset if appropriate; phone compatibility.
Wi-Fi internet works, but Wi-Fi Calling fails Wi-Fi Calling setting; working internet; T-Mobile’s speed and network requirements; a second Wi-Fi network.
Mobile service and Wi-Fi Calling both fail Outage check, restart, and T-Life’s checks for account setup, tower issues, software, and connection settings.
Problem began after a phone or SIM/eSIM change T-Life account and device checks, then the BYOD compatibility guidance or T-Mobile support.

These symptoms help narrow the next check; they do not by themselves identify a specific fault. T-Mobile’s support guidance describes checks to try, not a diagnosis of an individual phone.
