systemd_commander – TUI for Managing systemd Services

systemd_commander is a free, standalone terminal UI that wraps systemctl and journalctl so you can browse, start, stop, enable and edit systemd services and filter journal logs from the keyboard.

systemd_commander is a standalone, keyboard-driven terminal user interface for managing systemd services and browsing journal logs on a local Linux machine. It does not replace systemd. It sits on top of the standard systemctl and journalctl commands, sends them the actions you pick from function-key menus, and shows the results in one screen. The project ships two programs: systemd_commander for service units and journal_viewer for log entries.

The project is hosted on GitHub by its developer, Marton Juhasz, and was extracted from the ros2_console_tools codebase. Its documentation covers building from source. This article explains what the tools can change on your system, who gets the most out of them, and what you need to build and run them.

What systemd_commander is

The project describes itself as a standalone terminal UI for systemd service management and journalctl log browsing. The LinuxLinks overview uses similar wording, calling it “a terminal user interface for managing systemd services and browsing journal logs.” The project repository is the primary source for its feature set and build steps. The repository states that the codebase builds as a plain CMake project with no ROS 2 dependencies, even though it was split out of ros2_console_tools.

Two binaries come out of the build:

  • systemd_commander lists and controls service units.
  • journal_viewer reads journal entries, with live and snapshot modes and filters.

Both depend on the systemctl and journalctl installed on the same machine. The project does not describe any remote-management mode.

What it can change on your system

Because the tool drives systemctl, anything you trigger from its service list has the same effect as running the corresponding command yourself. The documentation lists these capabilities: browsing loaded and installed service unit files, inspecting service details, starting, stopping, restarting and reloading units, enabling and disabling unit files, editing unit files, and opening a selected service’s logs.

The service-list function keys map to those actions as follows. The “Underlying command” column shows the standard systemd call that each key performs, based on the project’s description of how it uses systemctl and journalctl.

Key Action in systemd_commander Underlying command Effect
F2 Start systemctl start UNIT Changes the running state for the current session
F3 Stop systemctl stop UNIT Stops the running service now
F5 Restart systemctl restart UNIT Stops and starts the service
F6 Reload systemctl reload UNIT Asks the service to reload its configuration, if the unit supports it
F7 Enable systemctl enable UNIT Configures the unit to start at boot
F8 Disable systemctl disable UNIT Stops the unit from starting at boot
F9 Open logs journalctl -u UNIT Opens the selected service’s journal entries

The project’s key list does not show a dedicated key for editing unit files. Check the built-in help (F1) on the version you install for the exact binding.

Who benefits from a keyboard-driven workflow

The tool suits people who already work in a terminal and manage several services on one host. Typing a full systemctl command for each action is precise but slow when you are moving between units, comparing states and checking logs. A list you can scroll, with the same actions one keystroke away, reduces that friction.

It is most useful for:

  • Administrators on servers, workstations or lab machines who check service status and logs many times a day.
  • Developers running local daemons who restart and inspect them repeatedly while debugging.
  • Users who want to keep their hands on the keyboard and avoid switching to a mouse-driven administration tool.

It is less of a fit if you manage services only occasionally, or if you prefer scripted, repeatable commands that can be logged and reviewed. For scripts, calling systemctl and journalctl directly remains the reliable route, because the tool is an interactive front end and the project does not document a scripting interface.

The journal viewer

The companion journal_viewer reads journal entries and offers live refresh or a fixed snapshot. Its documented controls are:

F2 Switch between live and snapshot modes
F5 Filter by priority
F6 Filter by text
F7 Select a journal namespace

The viewer also opens detailed popups for individual entries. Snapshot mode is the better choice when you want a fixed set of lines to read or compare; live mode suits watching a service as it runs.

Privileges and journal namespaces

The documentation says the tools rely on local systemctl and journalctl and request privileges only when a particular operation needs them. The whole interface does not have to run as root. Read-only browsing and log viewing therefore need no elevated rights in most setups, while start, stop, enable and edit actions prompt for privilege when they run. The project does not spell out the exact prompt mechanism, so verify the behaviour on your own system before relying on it.

The tool can also apply a service’s LogNamespace setting when it opens that service’s logs. This matters on systems where a unit writes to a separate journal namespace, because logs for that unit will not appear in the default view unless the namespace is selected.

Building from source

The project documents a source build. Install these prerequisites first:

  • CMake 3.16 or newer
  • A C++17-capable compiler
  • The ncursesw library and its development files
  • GTest, optional, only needed for the parser tests

Then run the three documented commands from the top of the source tree:

  1. Configure the project: cmake -S . -B build
  2. Compile it: cmake --build build -j
  3. Install the built programs: cmake --install build

Expected result: the configure step finishes without missing-dependency errors, the build produces the systemd_commander and journal_viewer binaries in the build directory, and the install step copies them to the destination set by your CMake configuration. The reviewed documentation does not state a default install location, so check the CMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX value in your configuration if you need to know where the files land. If configuration fails, the most common cause is a missing ncursesw development package or a CMake version below 3.16.

Installation status and compatibility

The documentation covers building from source. It does not establish whether prebuilt binaries or distribution packages are currently published for any Linux distribution, so this article makes no claim about package availability. Check the project repository’s releases and README for the current installation route before assuming a package exists. Likewise, the project does not publish a compatibility matrix by distribution, so confirm that your system’s systemctl and journalctl behave as the project expects.

systemd basics that matter here

SUSE’s guide Managing systemd Services, published 2026-10-01, defines systemd units as resources managed through unit files. It describes systemctl as the central tool for examining and controlling the systemd system and service manager, stating that “systemctl is the central management tool for controlling the init system.”

The distinction between enabling and starting is the one most likely to cause surprises in a tool with both F2 and F7 on the same screen:

  • Start and stop change the service’s current runtime state.
  • Enable and disable change whether the unit is configured to start at boot.

A service can be enabled but stopped, or running but disabled. Pressing F7 does not start the service, and F2 does not make it persist across reboots.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For troubleshooting, the same guide recommends checking a service’s status and querying its journal with journalctl -u SERVICE, which is what F9 runs for the selected unit. It also warns that restarting or terminating D-Bus on a running system is not recommended or supported, because it disrupts communication between systemd clients and the manager. Avoid selecting the D-Bus unit for restart or stop actions in the service list.
