Start with systemctl status NAME.service, then inspect the unit’s journal with journalctl -u NAME.service -b. The first specific error—not simply the fact that the service failed—usually tells you what to check next. These steps apply to systemd-based Linux systems; exact behavior and available options can depend on your distribution and installed systemd version.
1. Check the service state and failure details
Replace NAME with the unit’s actual name, such as sshd or nginx:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
systemctl status NAME.service
The output identifies whether the unit is loaded and active or failed, shows the process systemd tried to run, and may report an exit status and recent log lines. Treat those lines as clues rather than a complete diagnosis. The systemd project’s debugging guide illustrates how a failed process and its output appear in status information.
Note the exact unit name, the reported result or exit status, and any specific error message. A generic “failed to start” message does not, on its own, identify the cause.

2. Read the service’s journal
For a system service, show its messages from the current boot:
journalctl -u NAME.service -b
-u filters entries for the unit, while -b selects the current boot. These options are documented in the systemd journalctl manual, version 255.
- To inspect the previous boot, run
journalctl -u NAME.service -b -1. - To follow new entries as they arrive, run
journalctl -f -u NAME.service.
Service standard output and standard error are normally sent to the journal, so an empty terminal does not prove the application produced no message. The debugging guide’s example includes the application error “Failed to parse config.” Look for the earliest specific error around the failed start; later messages may only describe the consequences.

Do not apply the same repair to every failed unit. Use the actual journal text to narrow the investigation:

The integration of dual 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet ports (powered by Realtek RTL8125 controller) makes this compact computer an exceptional hardware choice for tech enthusiasts. Easily configure it into software routers, hardware firewalls (pfSense, OpnSense), home NAS servers, or local homelabs.
- A configuration or parse error: Check the file and setting named in the message. If it identifies a unit-file syntax problem, inspect that unit definition; if it identifies an application configuration file, correct the application’s configuration instead.
- A missing executable or path: Check the command and file path named by the unit and confirm they exist as expected.
- A permission or dependency error: Follow the specific file, operation, or dependency identified in the log rather than changing unrelated settings.
- An exit status without a useful explanation: Read more journal entries around the start attempt. The exit code reports a process result; it is not necessarily the underlying cause.
These are diagnostic possibilities, not proof of a particular fault. The journal message and the unit definition determine which branch applies.
4. Reload systemd after editing a unit file
If you changed a systemd unit definition, ask systemd to reload its unit-file information before trying the service again:
systemctl daemon-reload
Then retry the start and check status and logs again:

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →systemctl start NAME.service
systemctl status NAME.service
journalctl -u NAME.service -b
daemon-reload refreshes systemd’s view of unit definitions; it does not fix an invalid configuration used by the application itself. If the error points to an application configuration file rather than the unit, address that file’s error instead.

5. Check whether you are querying the right kind of service
The commands above show the usual system-service path. A user service runs in a user’s systemd manager, so a system-unit query may not show the relevant unit or its logs. Use the user-service context and journal options appropriate to that account. If system-journal records seem inaccessible, permissions may be the reason: access is restricted by default to root and certain groups, according to the journalctl manual.
For missing records from an earlier boot, consider journal storage and retention as well as the service itself. The journald.conf manual, version 252 documents volatile and persistent storage settings; previous-boot records may not be retained under every configuration.
6. Use rescue or emergency mode only for boot-level trouble
If the problem is broader than one failed service and the system cannot complete boot, rescue or emergency targets may provide a recovery environment. They are not the default fix for a single service that will not start. The systemd debugging guide describes these modes for boot problems and notes that emergency mode may require manually remounting the root filesystem read-write before editing files. Take care: recovery actions at this level affect the system beyond the individual unit.
A short diagnostic sequence
- Identify the exact unit name and run
systemctl status NAME.service. - Read current-boot messages with
journalctl -u NAME.service -b; use-b -1for the preceding boot or-fto follow live output. - Use the first specific error to choose what to inspect: application configuration, unit definition, executable path, permissions, or a dependency.
- If you edited a unit definition, run
systemctl daemon-reload, then retry and check the resulting status and journal. - If records are missing, verify that you are querying a system or user service in the appropriate context and account for journal access and retention.
For help diagnosing a particular failure, include the exact unit name, the relevant status and journal output, your Linux distribution, and whether the unit is a system or user service. Remove secrets or sensitive values from logs before sharing them.
