For most first-time players, System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster is the easier version to recommend: it keeps the 1999 game’s core intact while updating its presentation, controls, platform support, and co-op. Choose the legacy edition if you specifically want the original’s unmodified look and feel. On PC, the original is no longer sold separately; Steam says it is included with the remaster at no extra cost.
What changed in the System Shock 2 remaster?
The 25th Anniversary Remaster updates how the game looks and plays on current systems without rebuilding its underlying game. Nightdive describes improvements to rendering, interface clarity, input options, performance, co-op, and mod support.

No. Nightdive framed the project as a remaster because the game was already playable and needed updated graphics, performance, and console support—not a complete rebuild. Stephen Kick, Nightdive’s founder and CEO, explained: “Improved graphics, performance, and the ability to play on console — so it was decided to remaster the game instead of completely remaking it.” Xbox Wire, March 20, 2025

- System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster Key Features: Cross-Play Co-Op multiplayer. Choose from 3 branches of the Military; O.S.A, Marines or Navy and experiment with different play styles. Up to 120 FPS performance with ultra-widescreen support. 50 Trophies to unlock. Enhanced Characters, Weapon Models and Animations. Optimized Controller support. Quality of Life Improvements.
The original design remains a first-person blend of real-time action and role-playing, with distinct weapons, technical, and psi approaches. Updated models, assets, materials, shaders, and ambient occlusion alter the visual presentation, but the remaster retains the original game rather than replacing it with a new interpretation. Should you play the original or the remaster?
Choose the remaster if you are new to the game
- You want the most straightforward current-platform route into the game.
- You value clearer menus and in-game UI or want controller navigation and remappable controls.
- You want cross-play co-op or the advertised mod support.
- You want the updated presentation while keeping the original’s core design.
Choose the legacy edition if you want the 1999 presentation
The legacy version is the better fit for a returning player who wants to compare the original look and feel, rather than the remaster’s updated rendering and interface. On PC, Steam’s announced arrangement makes the legacy edition available with the remaster purchase at no additional cost.

Can you still buy the original System Shock 2?
On PC, not as a standalone purchase through the platforms covered by Steam’s notice. The notice says the 1999 game was delisted from PC platforms on October 10, 2025; existing owners retain library access, and the legacy version is included with the 25th Anniversary Remaster purchase at no additional cost. Those terms describe the PC arrangement in the notice and should not be assumed to apply identically to every console or region. Steam delisting notice, October 7, 2025
