System settings are the built-in controls for changing how a computer or phone looks, connects, protects your data, and works with apps. On Windows 11, press Windows key + I to open Settings; on Android, swipe down from the top for Quick Settings; on Apple devices, open the system-provided Settings app. Exact labels and paths vary by operating-system version and device.
What system settings control
Settings let you adjust device preferences and capabilities. Common examples include appearance, network connections, accounts, accessibility, language and region, privacy, and updates. Apple describes its Settings app as the place for system-wide options as well as app-specific controls such as access to location, camera, microphone, notifications, Siri, or Search (Apple Developer Documentation: Settings).

Open and navigate settings by platform
Windows 11
- Press Windows key + I to open Settings.
- To locate a particular control, select the Settings search field and type what you want to change. Microsoft also documents Ctrl + E as a shortcut to focus the search box.
- For browsing, choose a relevant category, such as System, Bluetooth & devices, Network & Internet, Personalization, Apps, Accounts, Time & language, Accessibility, Privacy & security, or Windows Update. Names and arrangement can change between Windows versions.

Apple devices
Open the system Settings app on the device. Apple’s platform guidance establishes the app’s general scope, but it is not a step-by-step manual for every device. The menu path for a particular control can differ across iPhone, iPad, Mac, and software versions, so use current Apple Support instructions for the specific device and setting.

Android
- Swipe down once from the top of the screen to show the first Quick Settings controls; swipe down again to see the full panel.
- Tap a tile to toggle that control. Tap its label for quick adjustments, or touch and hold the tile to open more advanced settings.
- To customize the panel, swipe down twice, tap Edit, then add, remove, or reorder tiles.
These steps are documented in Google’s Quick Settings guide. Some instructions require Android 13 or later. Custom Android versions may differ.
Change app permissions carefully
Windows
On Windows 11, open Settings > Privacy & security and select a permission area such as Location, Camera, Microphone, Contacts, or Calendar. Microsoft cautions that desktop apps may not appear in these lists or follow the same controls as apps obtained through the Microsoft Store. A missing app entry therefore does not necessarily mean the desktop app cannot access a capability; check that app’s own settings and documentation. See Microsoft’s Windows app permissions guidance.

Apple devices
App-specific settings can include access to features such as location, camera, microphone, and notifications. The available controls and their location depend on the Apple device and its software version.
Android
Be especially cautious with restricted settings and accessibility access. Google warns that an app with accessibility access may be able to read screen content and interact with apps on your behalf. Allow restricted settings only when you understand why the app needs them and trust its developer. Google explains this in its restricted settings guidance.

Quick controls versus deeper configuration
Use the entry point that matches the task: a quick panel is convenient for frequent switches, while the full Settings app is better for detailed configuration. The platforms expose those routes differently:

For Google account and Google service options on Android, open the device’s Settings app and tap Google. Google notes that custom Android versions can differ and recommends checking with the device manufacturer if the steps do not match (Google account settings on Android).

Why your menus may look different
- Operating-system version: A feature may move, acquire a different label, or be unavailable in an older release.
- Device type: Apple’s Settings layout differs among iPhone, iPad, and Mac.
- Manufacturer customization: Android makers can change menu names and Quick Settings behavior. Google advises consulting the manufacturer when its steps do not work.
- Windows edition in use: Windows 10 has an older Settings interface than Windows 11. Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025; consult Microsoft’s Windows 10 support notice for details.
If a path does not match, first confirm the device model and operating-system version, then search the Settings app or use the device maker’s current support instructions. Linux settings paths vary by distribution and desktop environment; the platform-specific steps above do not establish a universal Linux route.
