Synthetic image generation is the creation of image content by a generative AI system that has learned patterns from data. People commonly guide these systems with text prompts, and some tools also accept reference images or follow-up requests to revise a result.
What does synthetic image generation mean?
It is a useful plain-language term, not a single universally standardized technical definition. The closest authoritative umbrella term is NIST’s “synthetic content”: information such as images, videos, audio, and text that has been significantly altered or generated by algorithms, including AI. NIST describes generative AI as models that emulate the structure and characteristics of input data to generate derived synthetic content. NIST’s glossary defines the model category; its 2024 report sets out the synthetic-content framing.

In practice, the term can describe a newly created AI image or, depending on how extensively it has been changed, a materially altered image. It does not automatically mean that an image is deceptive, harmful, or intended to pass as a photograph.
How are synthetic images made?
A user may describe a subject, setting, action, and visual style in a text prompt. A generative model uses patterns learned from data to produce image content in response. Depending on the tool, the user may then request revisions or provide reference images to guide the result. OpenAI Academy’s guidance on creating images with ChatGPT describes one product’s workflow; other generators may work differently.

Is a synthetic image the same as a deepfake?
No. Synthetic imagery is the broader category. Under the EU AI Act, a deepfake is AI-generated or manipulated image, audio, or video content that resembles existing persons, objects, places, entities, or events and falsely appears authentic or truthful. A generated illustration or concept image need not meet that narrower description.
The distinction depends on what happened to the content and how it is presented:
- Newly generated image: AI creates image content, such as an imagined landscape or product concept.
- Altered image: An existing image is changed. It may fall under synthetic content when the alteration is significant.
- Deepfake: Generated or manipulated content resembles something real and is presented as if authentic or truthful.
Can you tell if an image was AI-generated?
Sometimes provenance information or a watermark can offer clues, but neither is a universal authenticity test. C2PA Content Credentials can use embedded metadata to record information such as the tool or service involved, creation time, and related history. SynthID is an embedded watermark signal that may persist through some transformations. OpenAI’s provenance documentation describes provenance signals in its generated content.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThese signals do not prove that an image is accurate, legally owned, unedited, or shown in the right context. Metadata can be removed through platform handling, editing, or conversion, and substantial changes can weaken watermark detectability. NIST’s overview of technical approaches to digital content transparency reviews provenance, labeling, detection, and related mitigations; it cautions that the effectiveness of many approaches has not been fully examined and that some may be years from widespread deployment. Treat a detector result or missing provenance marker as one signal, not a conclusive verdict.

Why the phrase “image synthesis” can be ambiguous
In forensic science, “image synthesis” can refer to rendering images with computer-graphics techniques for illustrative purposes, such as age progression or reconstruction. That usage is distinct from AI image generation; context matters. The NIST OSAC Lexicon entry records this forensic meaning.
