Choose based on the specific app and your NAS, not on a blanket belief that packages or containers are always better. A SynoCommunity package is the simpler starting point when it supports your model and DSM version and you want installation and updates handled in Package Center. A container is a good fit when the app’s publisher provides a suitable image and you are comfortable configuring storage, ports, permissions, and image updates.
On DSM 7.2 and later, Synology calls its container-management application Container Manager; older guides may still say Docker. The name changed, but the choice remains app-specific.

What is the difference between a SynoCommunity package and a container?
A SynoCommunity package installs as a DSM package and appears in Package Center. SynoCommunity’s guide describes adding its package source, installing from the Community section, and managing package updates and removal through Package Center. See the SynoCommunity installation guide.

Synology says Container Manager replaced Docker for container management starting with DSM 7.2; the current name is reflected in its Knowledge Center documentation, last updated February 5, 2026. Some older DSM references and tutorials still use “Docker.”

Which option is available for your NAS?
Start with your NAS model, its DSM version, the application you want, and the device’s CPU architecture. Package compatibility is not universal: SynoCommunity supports particular DSM versions and architectures, and not every package is available on every platform. Its compatibility guide says Package Center filters the listing to packages compatible with the NAS model and DSM version.
For a container, check separately that Container Manager is available for your model and DSM version, and that the application publisher offers an image compatible with the NAS architecture. Availability and image compatibility vary; there is no single model list or compatibility rule that establishes support for every third-party image.

How do setup and updates compare?
| Consideration | SynoCommunity package | Container in Container Manager |
|---|---|---|
| Installation | Add the SynoCommunity source, then install a compatible listing from Package Center’s Community section, following the installation guide. | Follow the application publisher’s image and deployment instructions; verify Container Manager and image compatibility for your NAS. |
| Updates | SynoCommunity’s guide describes package updates through Package Center. The actual release schedule depends on the package and its maintainer. | Image and container maintenance depends on the publisher’s release process and your update practice. There is no universal update cadence. |
| Configuration | Settings and port behavior depend on the package. SynoCommunity notes that some package ports are fixed. | Plan the application’s storage mounts, port mappings, and required permissions using its documentation. A port mapping can avoid a conflict with a fixed package port, as described in SynoCommunity’s troubleshooting guide. |
What should you check before choosing?
Choose the package when DSM integration matters most
- The exact package is listed as compatible with your NAS and DSM version.
- You prefer the familiar Package Center workflow for installation and updates.
- The package’s settings, dependencies, and port requirements suit your setup.
Choose the container when the app’s image and your skills fit
- The publisher provides an image compatible with your device architecture.
- Container Manager is available for your model and DSM version.
- You can configure and maintain persistent storage, ports, permissions, and image updates.
Compare the specific maintainers if both are available
Check the package repository and image publisher’s release history, upgrade notes, supported architecture, backup and restore instructions, and required privileges. Those qualities belong to the individual app and maintainer; the packaging format alone does not establish which is more current, reliable, or secure.
How should you think about security and trust?
On DSM 7, Package Center warns that third-party packages are not verified by Synology. Synology’s documented DSM 7.0 policy prevents packages not signed by Synology from running with root privileges, citing the risk that a root-capable package could compromise system security. The policy is described in its third-party package support guidance. The warning is a reason to assess the actual package and maintainer, not proof that every community package is unsafe.

Containers are not automatically safe either. For the particular image, examine who publishes it, what privileges it requests, which folders it mounts, which ports it exposes, and how it is updated. The available guidance does not support a blanket security ranking between the two approaches.

Document where the application stores its data and how you will back it up before installing either format. SynoCommunity says DSM 7 keeps package data by default on uninstall, while DSM 6 packages often remove associated data; consult the individual package’s behavior and back up important files rather than relying on a general rule. See the installation and uninstall guidance. For a container, use the application’s instructions to identify persistent storage locations and include them in your backup plan.

A practical decision path
- Identify your NAS model, DSM version, CPU architecture, and the exact application you want.
- Check SynoCommunity’s compatibility information and the compatible listings shown in Package Center.
- Check that Container Manager is available for your NAS and that the application publisher’s image supports its architecture.
- If both methods are supported, compare their maintainers’ release history, upgrade and backup instructions, and required permissions.
- Choose the method whose setup and ongoing maintenance you can manage, then record the data locations and backup steps before installing.
