Syncthing can copy full-resolution photos from a phone to a computer you control, without uploading them to a Syncthing cloud service or paying Syncthing for storage. But it is a synchronizer, not a complete backup: edits and deletions can travel to the computer too. Keep a separate backup if you need protection from a failed drive, theft, or a propagated mistake.
What Syncthing does with your photos
Syncthing exchanges files between configured devices when they are online together. You choose a folder on each device, including a physical destination path on the receiving computer; Syncthing is not a hosted cloud storage service. The official Getting Started guide explains device pairing and folder setup, and the FAQ describes its device-to-device approach.

That makes it a way to keep another local copy of your original photo files, rather than a service that stores them for you. Whether it suits your routine depends on having both devices available for synchronization and enough computer storage for the library.

Syncthing propagates file creation, modification, and deletion. If you delete a photo on the phone, that deletion can reach the computer; an unwanted edit can also replace the version you meant to keep. The Synchronization documentation for v1.29.6 explains how changes are replicated. A synchronized second copy is useful, but it is not automatically independent protection from mistakes or hardware loss.

- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
If two devices make differing edits to the same file before syncing, Syncthing can preserve a renamed sync-conflict file. Review such files rather than assuming one version is the one you want.
Syncthing’s file versioning can retain older remote changes, but versioning is off by default and must be configured per folder on each device. It does not archive local changes made on that same device. See the file versioning documentation for the available behavior. For protection against drive failure, theft, or synchronized deletion, maintain a separate backup copy as well.

Set up a phone-to-computer photo folder
- Install Syncthing on both devices. The phone and computer both need to run it for the exchange.
- Pair the devices mutually. Exchange device IDs and approve each device on the other, following the Getting Started guide. Pairing is not complete merely because one device knows about the other.
- Choose the phone’s photo folder to share. Select the folder containing the full-resolution files you want copied. Confirm which folder is being shared before enabling synchronization.
- Set the receiving folder on the computer. Choose a dedicated physical path, such as a folder on the computer’s internal drive or an external drive. Syncthing’s folder setup uses a physical path; the documentation does not prescribe a drive capacity.
- Wait for synchronization and verify the result. Check that expected files appear in the computer folder before treating the transfer as complete. This gives you a chance to catch a wrong folder choice or an incomplete transfer.
- Decide how to retain recoverable versions. If you want recovery from remote replacements or deletions, configure file versioning for the receiving folder. Remember that it does not preserve local changes made on the receiving device itself.
- Keep a separate backup if the photos matter. Copy the computer library to another backup destination so one drive failure or propagated deletion does not remove every copy.
Choose the computer’s storage destination
The receiving computer needs enough free local space for the photo library, plus room for any retained versions or separate backup copy you plan to keep. There is no universal capacity recommendation in Syncthing’s setup documentation, so estimate from your existing library and expected growth rather than assuming a particular drive size.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems| Destination | When it fits | Trade-off to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Computer’s existing internal storage | You already have sufficient free capacity for the library and retained versions. | The photos occupy space on that computer; this alone is not a separate backup. |
| External drive | The computer needs additional capacity for local photo storage. | Consider whether it will remain connected and how it will be backed up. No particular model, capacity, price, or speed is established here. |
If your computer already has enough storage, you do not need to buy another drive. If not, an external hard drive or USB SSD can serve as the chosen local folder destination; the relevant choice is adequate capacity and a backup plan, not a claimed performance advantage.

Android: the official app was retired
The official Android app’s maintainer announced its retirement on October 20, 2024, saying the final GitHub and F-Droid release would accompany the December 2024 Syncthing version. The announcement is in the Syncthing Community Forum. That means readers should not treat the retired official app as a currently maintained official Android path.
A separate community project, Syncthing-Fork, documents Android functionality, including two-way synchronization on external SD cards since Android 11. It is distinct from the retired official app, and the cited project page does not establish official endorsement or a stable commercial program. Check its current maintenance, installation source, and compatibility before relying on it: Syncthing-Fork project repository.

Work out whether leaving a paid cloud tier saves money
Syncthing itself does not charge for hosted storage because it does not provide that storage service. Whether switching reduces your overall costs depends on what you already own and what you need to buy or maintain locally. Compare your former cloud plan’s price over a chosen period with any local-drive and separate-backup costs over that same period. Without those personal figures, there is no supported general savings amount.
