Sync.com’s current terms clearly explain one important trade-off: email-based password recovery stores an encrypted copy of your private key, which Sync says means the account is not strictly zero-knowledge. MEGA’s public app listing makes a strong password-access claim, but the current primary documentation needed to compare its encryption scope and recovery exceptions is not established here.
What the evidence says about each service
Security is more than an encryption label. For cloud storage, the practical questions include which data is encrypted end to end, what happens when you lose access, and whether account settings or features change the protection.

Sync.com: default encryption with a documented recovery trade-off
Sync.com’s Terms of Service describe its core storage service as end-to-end encrypted by default. They also warn that account settings, selected features, feature use, or support activity can affect encryption. Read the terms for the specific feature you plan to use rather than assuming every interaction is covered identically.

Sync’s optional email-based password-reset feature stores an encrypted copy of the private key in escrow. Sync says an account with this feature enabled is not configured on a strictly zero-knowledge basis. If you turn the option off, Sync says it deletes the escrowed key and can no longer recover the account if you lose your password. Some plans may require the feature or restrict disabling it.

MEGA: a stated password-access claim, with details not fully established
MEGA’s Google Play listing says its end-to-end encryption means the company cannot access or reset a user’s password. That is a vendor statement, not a substitute for current technical documentation or an independent security assessment. The comparison available from Cloudwards describes MEGA as offering private encryption, but it does not resolve the current technical scope, recovery arrangements, metadata treatment, or exceptions well enough to support a strict comparison with Sync’s terms.
Security comparison: what is established
| Question | Sync.com | MEGA |
|---|---|---|
| Encryption and exceptions | Terms describe core storage as end-to-end encrypted by default and warn that settings, features, and support activity may affect encryption. Sync Terms of Service | The app listing says end-to-end encryption prevents the company from accessing or resetting the password; current technical scope and exceptions are not established by that listing. MEGA Google Play listing |
| Password recovery and key control | Email-based reset escrows an encrypted private-key copy. Sync says enabling it is not strictly zero-knowledge; disabling it deletes the key and removes Sync’s ability to recover the account. Some plans may require or restrict disabling the option. Sync Terms of Service | The app listing says MEGA cannot reset the user’s password. The current primary-source recovery terms are not established here. MEGA Google Play listing |
| Two-factor authentication and account protections | Sync says free and paid accounts receive the same underlying two-factor authentication, encryption, zero-knowledge, and file-version-history protections. Sync Help Center | The cited material does not establish a comparable current set of account-protection details. |
| Provider access to stored file data | Sync’s privacy policy, latest version dated September 15, 2026, says it generally does not access or process stored file data, subject to stated exceptions. It also describes collecting account and contact information, including email, billing address, IP address, and device identifiers. Sync Privacy Policy | The cited material does not establish comparable current details about provider access or metadata. |
The table reflects what the cited sources establish, not a finding that an undocumented feature is absent. A vendor’s privacy claim and a complete, independently assessed technical picture are different kinds of evidence.

Can either company recover files if you forget your password?
For Sync.com, the answer depends on the email-based recovery setting and your plan. With the setting enabled, Sync stores an encrypted private-key copy to support reset; Sync says this is not strictly zero-knowledge. With it disabled, Sync says it deletes the escrowed key and cannot recover the account after a lost password. Check the terms and your account’s available settings before relying on either outcome.
For MEGA, the cited app listing says the company cannot access or reset the password. It does not establish the full current recovery process or every consequence of losing account credentials. Do not infer from that statement alone whether particular files can be recovered or what recovery options are available; consult MEGA’s current official account guidance before choosing a recovery strategy.

What to consider beyond encryption
Cloud storage security also depends on the way you use the account. Compare the services’ current controls and terms for these practical needs:
- Sharing: Review who can access shared files and what link or permission controls are available.
- Restoring files: Check version history and deleted-file recovery rules, including any retention limits.
- Devices and workflows: Consider supported operating systems, integrations, collaboration tools, and media playback if those affect how you store or share sensitive files.
- Plan fit: Compare current storage allowances and full subscription costs on official plan pages. Figures in third-party comparisons can become stale; Cloudwards’ comparison includes dated plan information and is not a 2026 price authority.
Sync’s help center says free and paid accounts have the same underlying encryption, zero-knowledge, two-factor authentication, and file-history protections. It lists a five-active-device limit. HIPAA compliance and a signed business associate agreement require specified paid plans, so organizations with those requirements should verify eligibility and terms directly with Sync.

How to choose without overstating the security case
- Prioritize explicit key-control terms: Sync documents how its email-reset escrow option changes strict zero-knowledge status. Decide whether account recoverability or keeping the provider out of that recovery path better matches your risk tolerance.
- Need to assess MEGA’s recovery model? Confirm its current official recovery terms before uploading files whose loss would be unacceptable. The cited app statement alone does not answer every recovery question.
- Harden either account: Use a unique, strong password and enable two-factor authentication. Keep any recovery information securely available to you, not only on a device or account that could become inaccessible.
- Match the service to the workflow: Compare sharing, restore, device, collaboration, and storage requirements separately from the encryption claims.
